Mission Initiative Newcastle East (MINE) is a Bishop’s Mission Order and registered charity working across the East end of Newcastle. It was established (as the Urban ministry and Theology project) as a creative way for the parishes and clergy of Byker and Walker to work and learn together with an initial emphasis on contributing to the economic regeneration of the area through the strategic use of the Church’s resources, and also as a vehicle for theological training in an urban context.

## Our Objectives:

- For the existing Anglican congregations to grow in spiritual depth, numerically and in theological awareness

- For new expressions of church presence and mission to emerge that honour the local context

- For local Christians to develop models of ministry that arise directly out of the context of social and economic regeneration

- For existing buildings to be used in a strategic and economical way

- For ecumenical cooperation and partnership to take place wherever appropriate and possible

- For the establishment of appropriate partnerships with both statutory and voluntary agencies through stimulating interaction with communities of Newcastle East

- For those engaged in theological training to share in learning gained by local people in a way that means we gain from their experience

- For theological reflection on the urban context to take place in the midst of the activities generated by the interaction of the above aims

We run a variety of projects that demonstrate our commitment and engagement with the Newcastle East area, a summary of which is below:

- A Youth team (MINE Youth) that we have developed to run our work with young people across Newcastle east. We found the model of running clubs, schools work and detached youth work as powerful ways of being with young people where they are. Some of the young people through this work have engaged with our sunday congregations and the connection with the local Church is important but there is also a sense of MINE Youth being a community of worship and discipleship in itself, connected to the Church but with permission to express itself differently in response to working with young people. We currently have two members of staff: a full time School’s worker, and part time youth worker in Byker. We have also been supported by a new partnership with St Thomas’ Church (the Diocesan resource Church) and the planting of an Eden team of young people who have moved into a local Estate intentionally to be with the community and support the local church, with an Eden Team Leader funded by St Thomas’s and the Message Trust.

- A ‘Presence project’ in St Anthony’s Parish, in partnership with the local Methodist Circuit. Through the appointment of a part time missioner jointly funded by the Methodists and LICG funding we have developed the Church’s presence in a local sheltered housing complex and community centre in one of the most deprived areas in Newcastle East. We run a weekly cafe for the residents and local community and are exploring how to develop the Church’s outreach.

- Money Advice Newcastle East is a debt advice charity set up in the east end of Newcastle 4 years ago. We offer free, impartial and individualised face to face debt advice, working under the umbrella of the Christian organisation Community Money Advice.
