Independent Examiner: Mrs Elizabeth Rickaby Walker Tyne and Wear NE6 2PU

Mission Initiative Newcastle East (MINE) is a Bishop’s Mission Order and registered charity working across the East end of Newcastle. It was established (as the Urban ministry and Theology project) as a creative way for the parishes and clergy of Byker and Walker to work and learn together with an initial emphasis on contributing to the economic regeneration of the area through the strategic use of the Church’s resources, and also as a vehicle for theological training in an urban context.

Our Objectives:

We run a variety of projects that demonstrate our commitment and engagement with the Newcastle East area:

Led by our Children’s and Youth Coordinator this currently entails:

Supporting the Community through the Pandemic:

It’s been a long year, and as well as regular activity we’ve been involved in a lot! Here is a summary of the sorts of things we’ve got up to as we support children, young people and families in the East End through the Coronavirus Pandemic.

Over lockdown we’ve delivered packs of activities (crafts, games, reflections, sweets) and food to more than 150 families in Byker and Walker, many of them on many occasions. We’ve done these for Easter, Christmas, half term, summer, and various other times, and all have been a great opportunity to get to know new families, and support those we know more closely.

Over Summer 2020 we took part in Street Games’ “Best Summer Ever”. With funding from the department of education, organisations across the city put on street clubs, pop up workshops and detached youth work to give children and young people a chance to have some fun over what could have been a pretty miserable summer. We spent 5 of the 7 weeks out and about, delivering activity packs and food parcels, connecting with the community, and doing all sorts of exciting youth work with the East End’s wonderful young people.

At Autumn and Christmas we decked St Michael’s church grounds with lights and invited families to come, enjoy the sights and atmosphere, and reflect on themes of comfort, joy, hope and light. See the separate report for more information on them!

In the Christmas holidays, when it was still against the rules to gather inside, we decided we wouldn’t let some cold weather stop us celebrating Christmas and the joy of Jesus’ birth! So we did an outdoor sports club in Walker park with people we’d met over the year on detached. We had a great time chatting about the Christmas story and playing sports together, so when it came to Easter we decided to do it again.

Of course, it being Easter, we expected it to be warmer. We were wrong. Still, even though it snowed, young people came to the park and we played more sports, ate more food, and chatted about the Easter Story. Off the success of Christmas and Easter, we did another sports holiday club at half term.

We were successful in a bid to buy and decorate a large shipping container outside St Michael’s Church. With help from the long-term friend of MINE youth, Graham, we invited children and young people from Byker to come and learn some graffiti skills, and paint the whole container. It really does look fantastic, and more than that, the young people involved can now walk past the church grounds, point to it, and say “I did that”. It’s great to see young people exploring creativity, and making a positive difference in their community.

An ambitious project to redevelop St Michael’s Church and its site into a Youth and Community Hub, which MINE has been leading on, led by a part time coordinator and Steering Group.

The Lighthouse Project arose out of the need to preserve and modernise the St Michael’s Church building on Byker Hill, a valuable piece of Byker’s heritage, while also addressing the needs of the Community. In development with Mission Initiative Newcastle East (MINE), the Lighthouse Project aims to provide a sustainable youth and community hub as well as a flexible worship space and private hire offer.

Key Partners

Over the course of our consultation process we have developed close relationships with a number of organisations in the area and beyond. We have firm expressions of partnership interest from Foundation Futures, Nourish Food School, Byker Young People’s Partnership, Kids Kabin, Byker Sands, MINE Youth, Children North East West End Food Bank, Byker Scouts and Seven Stories. Whilst also maintaining close relationships with others, including but not limited to Onside, Children and Families Newcastle, Northern Stage and Newcastle City Council, who may not be a direct partner but are a vital part of our learning, development and future.

In July 2021, we employed Bradley McClure Architects to take us up to RIBA stage 2, which brings together technical surveys alongside extensive community consultation and conservation reports to produce designs for the building. The design involves multi breakout

spaces, for use in multiple activities and groups. We hope, alongside our partners, that the space can be used collaboratively, with multiple organisations working in the space at the same time. The vision for this is to allow users to engage with multiple organisations at once in order to make the most of their visit and encourage fulfilling opportunities for the community.

Money Advice Newcastle East:

Money Advice Newcastle East is a debt advice charity set up in the east end of Newcastle 4 years ago. We are a project of the MINE together with the Methodist church. We offer free, impartial and individualised face to face debt advice, working under the umbrella of the Christian organisation Community Money Advice.

https://www.communitymoneyadvice.com/

Our client's tell us of the relief of having someone to listen to them, to help them without judging. The struggle with debt impacts on all areas of their life. They feel guilty and hopeless. Working with them to find the right solution for them we show the love of God in a practical way, offering them the fresh start that they need.
