Hungarian School Oxford Charity Report of trustees for the year ending 31 August 2023
The Governors of the Hungarian School Oxford Charity present their annual report and audited accounts for the year ended 31 August 2023 and confirm they comply with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011, the trust deed and the Charities SORP (FRS 102).
The Charity is managed by five trustees as follows: Agnes Bodoni - Chair Eniko Nagy - Secretary and Teacher Coordinator Maria Vernicos - Treasurer Monika Bangha - Public Relations Eva Beregi – Administrator
HSO has invited any members to consider joining the Committee as a trustee. New Trustees can be appointed by a resolution of the existing Trustees. We provide necessary training to the newly appointed trustees by making any information about HSO available.
OUR AIMS:
The HSO’s principal aim is to establish a strong and authentic sense of community for people with Hungarian connections in Oxford and the surrounding areas. Its mission is to promote Hungarian cultural excellence through different activities. The beneficiaries are our pupils, their families, the teachers and also general public at open events.
OUR OBJECTIVES:
The objective of HSO is to provide Hungarian language and cultural education for children who live in Oxfordshire for the benefit of the public. As a supplementary school, the weekend activities will be based on a planned timetable and led by teachers and volunteers.
REVIEW OF ACTIVITIES AND ACHIEVEMENTS:
The sessions were held at Dean Court Community Centre in Oxford. Children learnt about Hungarian language, culture, traditions, and values while playing, performing and being creative. We had two groups of children aged 0-6 years and two groups of children aged 6-12. All groups included children of mixed ages. Among them there are some pupils who only understand the Hungarian language, but do not speak it, and there are also some who have difficulty even understanding the language. During the school year, we felt it was important that these children are encouraged to speak Hungarian, and we tried to increase their basic vocabulary with playful tasks.
The activities aimed for the children aged 0-6 consisted of:
-
introduction (what happened since last time, what will we do today);
-
action songs, folk songs, traditional folk games;
-
story time;
-
arts and crafts.
The 6+ children worked in two different groups, one group for those who were still learning the language and one group for the pupils who could already read and write in Hungarian. In both groups a great emphasis was placed on communication, on encouraging pupils to use the language. Activities for these groups included reading / listening to texts (stories, poems), arts and crafts, games, creative writing and music.
Between the two 50 minute sessions we had a 30 minute break, when the whole community had snack together, celebrated birthdays and learnt a new song.
The structure of the year was:
September 4, October 8 & 22, November 5 & 19, December 3, January 7 & 21 February 4 & 18, March 4 & 18, April 1 & 22, May 6 & 20, June 10
SOME OF OUR MEMORABLE DAYS:
4[th] September – Oxford Treasure hunt
We have planned a treasure hunt in Oxford, where the participants had to decode and follow a map in order to fine the 7 pillars (our true treasures/values) of the Hungarian School Oxford: care, peace, courage, togetherness, freedom, love, endurance. The last stop of the map was at the University Parks, where we had a picnic together.
The map was shared on the Hungarian School Oxford’s FB page and it is free to download to all families who would like to have a fun day out in Oxford.

- 3 Dec - St Nicholas Day / Mikulás – open event with 150 attendants
Mikulás, or St Nicholas is the Hungarian version of Santa Claus. On the night of December 5th, St. Nicholas visits all Hungarian children to reward them, if they have been good all year long. He wears a long red coat and a red cap on his head, holding a shepherd's staff in one hand, and carrying a sack full of gifts on his back. This event is always very popular among families.
Feb 4 Hungarian carnival – Farsang
Costume parades and carnival are meant to mark the formal farewell to winter. It is a fun event, packed with music, games and delicious doughnuts .
March 4 International Women’s Day
International Women's Day is a holiday celebrated annually on March 8 as a remembrance of the women's rights movement and a celebration of all girls and women.
18 March - Március 15
One of the most important national holidays of Hungary is celebrated on the 15th day of March, in memory of the 1848–49 Revolution and War of Independence
1 April – Easter
Traditional egg-painting, learning about Easter traditions, eating traditional food made this meeting memorable.
May 6 Mothers’ Day
Mother’s day In Hungary is celebrated on the first Sunday in May.
May 20
Open event, we had two special guests visiting our school: Eszter Vass, a Hungarian poet and Zozó Katona,with his kürtős/lángos making business
June 10 Children’s Day
Each year, Hungarians celebrate Children's Day on the last Sunday of May. Lots of fun games, challenges and some lovely treats were offered to the children.
June 24 End of year celebration
We started the year with families wandering the streets of Oxford in search of real treasures/values. We ended the year by recalling these values in a family atmosphere and adding a new one, FRIENDSHIP to the list. It was a pleasure to see that many families have made friends, and that the Hungarian School Oxford lived on through friendships.
VENUE: We continued to use our venue in Botley, familiar to all attendants. The address is: Dean Court Community Centre, Pinnocks Way, Oxford OX2 9DG.
PUPIL NUMBERS AND FEES:
32 children and their families attended the school regularly, and on our open events the maximum number according to our venue limitation was 150.
We had some money saved from last year so we decided to keep the 50% off tuition fees to support families attending the school. The fees for the school year 2022-2023 were 2*50 GBP/child for the two semesters.
TEACHERS: Our regular teachers were Ms Klára Müller Deákné, Ms Enikő Nagy, Mrs Ágnes Bodoni and Mrs Edina Ökrös. All our teachers are qualified teachers with enhanced DBS checks.
Our ever growing library led by volunteer Ms Erika Harlos-Szendrey was available to all families for free.
We continued to operate our Facebook page, a platform to inform the large public about all the activities. Through regular newsletters teachers and trustees communicated with families whose children attended the School via emails. We shared more photos, ideas, enquiries and information through our Closed (Hungarian School Oxford Parents) Facebook Group.
