Achievements and Performance
Electoral Roll and Church Attendance Note:2021 figures in brackets There were 118 (120) on the Church Electoral Roll-on 31 Dec 2022.
The average weekly Sunday attendance at St Michael’s Morning service was 64 (64) adults, plus 13 (9) children. The average attendance at the midweek service was 23 (23) The average attendance at“The 4 O'clock” Service was 20. Noticeably, a change in the pattern of church attendance has been that less people attend Sunday worship each week and more only once or twice a month. The attendance at the midweek service is more regular and continues to grow.
The Statistics for Mission return for 2022 recorded a “Worshipping Community” of 118 (116). This is the number of people (adults and children) who attended worship in church at least once a month during the year. Included are 6 people who were unable to attend due to serious illness.
At St Gabriel’s an Agape meal was held on Maundy Thursday, and “From Darkness to Light”, was held at St Gabriel's on Advent Sunday with 18 people attending.
We have held monthly services at Dorset House and at Upton Bay Care Home also Tess has been asked to take from assemblies in local schools.
Review of the year
We welcomed Ashley back from maternity leave in January.
The PCC met 6 times during the year with an average attendance of 84% (91%.) Committees have met between meetings and have reported to the full PCC.
Matters discussed included our support for a “Hope into Action” house being purchased through Faithworks for a family in need of housing. A lovely house was acquired in Hewitt Road and the family moved in April.
We also spent some time discussing the “Values for Hamworthy Churches” as discussed on a vision day in Autumn of 2021. These were the focus of a sermon series during the first half of the year.
Some church members took part in the “Living and Loving in Faith” course. We gratefully received a gift of a new portable Communion Table from the Stayman Family in memory of George and Hayley.
Regularly work parties have helped to keep the churchyards tidy and we are thankful to Brian Masters who has cut the grass in the new churchyard for a few years. He has had to give up because of ill health but Robert Stickland has agreed to take this on.
116 people attended the Easter Sunday Communion service at St Michael's in 2022. Christmas services attendances in 2022 returned to Pre-Covid levels. The Christingle service was particularly well attended but attendance at the Midnight Communion was down with only 37 Communicants. Numbers of adults and Children on Christmas Day were encouraging.
In August we were privileged to receive a visit from Archbishop Moses and 3 other Bishops from Wau in South Sudan at a Wednesday Morning service. It was really special to meet them and two of their wives.
In November we agreed to apply for warm spaces grants to open our buildings up during this time of energy crisis. These bids were successful and we received an unrestricted grant of £2,535 from the Diocese of Salisbury and another grant of £6K+ from Dorset Community Trust jointly for Hamworthy PCC and Moor Community Food.. There was a small overspend on this grant covered from by a gift for warm spaces 2
There were 7 (11) baptisms and 3 (1) Weddings held in Church during 2022. There were 4 (2) funerals in St Michael’s church, plus 2 (5) (funeral services were conducted at a Crematorium or a Cemetery on behalf of the churches and 5 (7) Burials of Ashes in St Michael's Churchyards.
Thanks also to Andrea Johnson who serves as our Parish Safeguarding Officer. Safeguarding is on the agenda of each PCC meeting and Safeguarding Policies are reviewed each November.
The Missions team have maintained contact with our Mission Partners from CMS and World Horizons The PCC continued to support the Children's Society, WAU, Operation Christmas Child and locally Routes to Roots, MARS and Cornerstone Church in Malawi. The Missions giving budget for 2022 was £6,500 - 10% of giving received.
The Green Team have worked hard throughout the year to improve our “green” credentials and to continue improvement to Bluebell Wood with guidance from Dorset Wildlife.
St Gabriel's Church has open up for activities and also a new “Fresh Expression” of church. “The Wednesday Thing” began at the end of June fortnightly with a time for a cuppa and a chat and then for a time for families to eat and chat. Also regular evening Prayer meetings were held. This is developing all of the time.
A tea party was held to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. A happy time for all despite being inside. Over 50 people came along.
