## **Hamworthy Parish Churches, Poole Annual Report and Accounts of the Parochial Church Council for the year ended 31st December 2020** ## **Administrative Information** St Michael's and St Gabriel's churches are situated in the parish of Hamworthy, Poole, part of the Diocese of Salisbury, within the Church of England. All church attendees are encouraged to register on the Electoral Roll and stand for election to the PCC. ## **Objectives and Activities** Hamworthy PCC has the responsibility of co-operating with the incumbent in promoting in the ecclesiastical parish the whole mission of the church, pastoral, evangelistic, social and ecumenical. It also has maintenance responsibilities for the Church Centre complexes of St Michael's and St Gabriel's in Hamworthy and governance responsibilities for St Gabriel’s Pre-School. ## **Achievements and Performance** _Electoral Roll and Church Attendance Note: ( ) 2019 figures_ There were 109 (110) parishioners on the Church Electoral Roll on 31 Dec 2020, 11 (13) of whom are not resident in the parish. The average weekly Sunday attendance at St Michael’s when the church was open pre lockdown was 62 (64) adults plus 9 children and 42 adults plus 5 children during Lockdown services. The average attendance at the midweek service was 15 (15).before lockdown and 18 during Lockdown. Services were on Zoom each Sunday at 10am with approx 52 participants each Sunday during Lockdown. Weekly service and sermon handouts were delivered or posted to over 30 people, unable to access Zoom, weekly Many thanks to all who helped with this. We are grateful to visiting clergy who have helped regularly with worship especially Revd John Good and also to Steve Perring, Lana Uttings, Chris Trent and singers for leading our worship at Church and on Zoom. The average Sunday attendance at St Gabriel’s was 12 (11) adults before lockdown and 24 during Lockdown The PCC are very grateful to Revd Reg and Jenny Baldock for all that they have done to support folk at St Gabriel's and to Jan Davies for her faithful work at St Gabriel's and on Turlin Moor. We have been unable to hold services at Dorset House during Lockdown in 2020. Sadly the Good Friday and Easter Services had to be cancelled in 2020 due to Covid restrictions but 125 adults and 22 children attended the Easter Sunday Open Air service at St Michael's in 2021 and over 50 people visited the Hope and Lament Exhibition organised during Holy Week. Sally also organised a Drive Through/Walk through Nativity on Christmas Eve. Approximately 100 people came and the service was very much appreciated. Christmas Eve and Christmas Day services were on Zoom. ## _Review of the year_ We have been delighted to welcome Revd Ashley Ross as an Associate Minister in Hamworthy Parish, Ashley was Licensed by Bishop Karen in December 2020, and also to welcome Revd Sally Taylor as a part-time Curate in Training to the parish. Sally also works as a Pioneer Minister with Poole Missional Communities We responded quickly to the needs of the Parish when the Covid Crisis began and formed “Hamworthy Together “with the Late Ann Khambatta, Community worker for Turlin Moor, Hamworthy Satellite Foodbank, and St Gabriel's Lunch Club. The Churches offered varied support through “Hamworthy Help” offering to collect shopping and prescriptions for those unable to do so themselves. We are very grateful for the work David Reed did in obtaining grants and organising the shopping and prescription collections, to Nicki Searle for running the Food Bank and to Terri and team for the Lunch Club, as well as Ann Khambatta who was instrumental in setting up Moor Community Food Store at St Gabriel's Church Hall which has helped many people in these difficult times. We are very grateful to all who have helped so faithfully with this work Sadly Ann died at the beginning of 2021 after a short illness and will be sadly missed by all her friends and those who helped with this venture – a fitting legacy. Mel Meadowcroft ( a long-time Messy Church Mum) has been appointed to take on the leadership of MCFS by Poole Community Trust. A new Audio Visual system was installed in St Michael's Church in 2020 at a cost of just over £58K. We look forward to making full use of the system in the near future. Work has continued at the copse (Bluebell Wood) at St Michael's in partnership with Dorset Wildlife Trust. Sally Taylor had planned start a new group for parents and toddlers “Little Acorns” in the Woodland in 2020 but this had to be delayed and it is now hoped that the first meeting will be on June 7th 2021. The PCC met 6 times during the year with an average attendance of 93%.(80%) Committees have met between meetings and have reported to the full PCC. It wasn't possible to hold any baptisms or weddings in church during 2020. However,there were 5 (7) funerals in St Michael’s church. Also 6 (5) funeral services were conducted at a Crematorium or a Cemetery on behalf of the churches and we had 11 burials of ashes in St Michael's Churchyards. “The Bridge” magazine is published 10 times per year with a rising circulation of approximately 230 and continues as an effective means of communication in the community. We are very grateful to the production team of Viv Robertson and Bryan Sullivan , Marie Ward, the contributors, and all who deliver this magazine. An online Alpha Course was held during 2020 and a Deanery online Alpha Course earlier this year. Some members of our congregation joined these and found them very helpful. Sadly many of our outreach activities and groups for children were not able to be held in 2020 . Dave and Sal Coates were able to provide some group activities on Zoom for primary school aged children and more recently Jude and Steve Perring have led a Zoom discussion group for teenagers at Sunday Services It is hoped to build on that in the future as we now have 12 children and 5 young people coming to church. Thanks also to Andrea Johnson who continues to serve as Parish Safeguarding Officer. Safeguarding is on the Agenda of each PCC meeting and Safeguarding Policies are reviewed each November. Data Protection procedures and Safer Recruitment polices are now in place Church members who lead groups or are positions of leadership or responsibility have appropriate DBS checks and many have updated their safeguarding training in recent months. The PCC has had due regard to the House of Bishops' guidance in relation to safeguarding. The PSO regularly discusses any Safeguarding issues with the Rector. The Missions group have maintained contact with our Mission Partners from CMS and World Horizons The PCC continues to support the Children's Society, WAU, Operation Christmas Child and locally Routes to Roots, MARS and Cornerstone Church in Malawi. In early 2021 Chris Stratta, from The Leprosy Mission spoke at a Zoom Service in March and amazingly over £2500 was given in response Both of the church centres are usually widely used by community groups and individuals for regular meetings and one-off events and this generates a very good amount of income. This year, however, our income has greatly reduced ( by approx 40%) as the only income we have received from premises hire is that from the PreSchools who were able to continue during the lockdown time. We are grateful to our Churchwardens, and Jon Handley, and cleaners Kristy and Jane who have continued ensure that our building remain clean, safe and tidy. In addition we are very grateful to Christine Lim who stepped down as Chair of the Fabric Committee in October for all that she has done over the past few years in this onerous role. Jo Maybury has taken on this task. ## _Finances_ ## _Planned Giving_ £41, 390 (£32,597) was given in planning giving. £9,217 (£8,611)was received in Gift Aid tax recovered. ## _Financial Review_ Total 2020 accountable receipts including restricted funds were £109,275 (£129,176). The 2020 receipts included gifts and grants to support Hamworthy Together, the 2019 receipts included gifts for the new A/V system. The figures for both years exclude St Gabriel's Pre-school funds. The total accountable payments were £165,820 (£132,998) (excluding Pre-School funds). The expenditure in 2020 was higher because of paying for the new A/V system. The total amount received from donations, collections and planned giving in 2020 was £64,310 (£63,046) (including restricted funds for the new A/V system but excluding a donation from SML in 2019 to fund a church worker) The PCC has used the monies from the Newman investment trust funds to help with the costs of the new A/V system. The PCC now only has the Keysworth investment trust fund. At the end of 2020 the value of this fund was £113,090 (£105, 785) Income from venue hire for both centres was £16,206 (£29,647) plus £14,400 (£13,354) from St Gabriel's Pre-School. The reduction in income was due to limitations imposed due to CoVid. The PCC fees received from the churchyard account was £2,175 (£2,378) The 2020 parish share of £44,487 (£40,429) was paid in full. ## _Reserves Policy_ The PCC retained £15,000 in its unrestricted Reserves Fund. The Pre-School also has a reserves fund of 56,335 (£75,289) in a “Dissolution” Fund. We have £4,297 (£9,682) in the restricted St Michael’s Building deposit account. The foremost, but not restricted, use of this is for St Michael’s building and fabric. During 2020 there was a major expenditure on external redecoration of St Michael's Church and centre. We have £59,223 (£59, 952) in the designated St Gabriel’s Building deposit account. This is specifically for the upkeep of St Gabriel’s Church Centre building. During 2020 money was spent on the upkeep of St Gabriel's church and hall. J Nisbet ## **ST MICHAEL’S AND ST GABRIEL’S CHURCHES** ## **INDEPENDENT EXAMINER’S REPORT ON THE ACCOUNTS** ## **Report to the PCC on accounts for the year ended 31[st ] December 2020** This report on the accounts of the PCC for the year ended 31 December 2020 is in respect of an examination carried out under Regulation 3(3) of the Church Accounting Regulations 1997 and s.43 of the Charities Act 1993. ## **Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner** The members of the PCC consider that an audit is not required for this year (under section 43(2) of the Charities Act 1993 (the Act)) and that an independent examination is needed. It is my responsibility to: - Examine the accounts (under section 43 of the Act); - To follow the procedures laid down in the General Directions given by the Charity Commission (under section 43(7)(b) of the Act), and - To state whether particular matters have come to my attention. ## **Basis of independent examiner’s statement** My examination was carried out in accordance with General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the PCC and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the accounts. ## **Independent examiner’s statement** In the course of my examination, no matter has come to my attention: 1. which gives me reasonable cause to believe that, in any material respect, the trustees have not met the requirements to ensure that: - a. proper accounting records are kept (in accordance with section 41 of the Act); and - b. accounts are prepared which agree with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the Act; or 2. to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
