TO ADVANCE EDUCATION AND IN PARTICULAR THE EDUCATION OF THE PUPILS AT MNYAKANYA HIGH SCHOOL AND OTHER SCHOOLS / INSTITUTES OF EDUCATION IN THE NKANDLA REGION OF KWAZULU NATAL AND AT ST MARY'S MENSTON SCHOOL AND OTHER SCHOOLS AND UNIVERSITIES WITHIN WEST YORKSHIRE, BY PROVIDING AND ASSISTING IN THE PROVISION OF OPPORTUNITIES, RESOURCES AND FACILITIES FOR EDUCATION AT THE SCHOOLS.

THE PROMOTION OF COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION IN HEALTHY RECREATION FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE INHABITANTS OF THE NKANDLA REGION OF KWAZULU NATAL BY THE PROVISION OF FACILITIES FOR PLAYING SPORT.
TO HELP YOUNG PEOPLE, ESPECIALLY BUT NOT EXCLUSIVELY THROUGH SPORTING ACTIVITIES, SO AS TO DEVELOP THEIR CAPACITIES AND SO THAT THEY GROW TO FULL MATURITY AS INDIVIDUALS AND MEMBERS OF SOCIETY.

In planning our activities for the year we kept in mind the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit at our trustees meetings.

The focus of our activities in our sixth year was to continue to strengthen the links with pupils at Mnyakanya High School, and other schools in South Africa, with pupils at St Mary’s Menston school, other local UK schools, Leeds University and Leeds Trinity University.

Preparatory work has continued with Mnyakanya School and South African partners to develop a Sports Pitch for the school and wider community. Work has continued to embed the ‘Cycling to Success’ programme. Despite volunteer visits to South Africa being postponed or cancelled due to Covid-19 this year a number of fundraising events have helped support establish The Bambisanani Athletics Challenge as a virtual pilot programme with primary schools in South Africa and Leeds. Funds also helped complete the rebuilding homes for Vumanhlamvu School community following fires in the region. Pilot activities in the ‘virtual space’ have developed not only in Athletics but also with a Higher Education initiative linking Physical Education and Sports Coaching students from both countries.

Extensive time has been invested over the last year developing existing partnerships and developing new ones with a view to future collaborations, including with the KZN Department of Sport and Recreation, KZN Department of Higher Education, KZN Cycling, South African High Commission, British Council and the Sport at the Service of Humanity Foundation.

Despite all the frustrations with Covid-19 this has been a very productive year for the partnership.

Section D Achievements and performance

Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year

Due to the impact of Covid-19 the main focus of the charity this year was to support remotely South African Schools through fund raising and strengthening links with the local UK community. The following are some of this year’s achievements:

Mnyakanya School achieved its best ever examination results citing the Bambisanani Partnership as an important factor in that success with particular reference to the ICT Suite and Water Installation Project provided by the charity
Cycling to Success initiative continues to develop with cycling in the Mnyakanya community as a means of transport, sport, fitness training and recreation flourishing. The initiative and has gained both praise and support from World Champion professional cyclist, Lizzie Deignan and has featured in numerous articles and on BBC radio programme.
Successful completion of eleven homes for the families of students from Vumanhlamvu School who were left homeless by the fires
Added two new UK schools and two new South African school to partnership activities through the Bambisanani International Athletics Challenge which involved 138 students. The success of this initiative has led to several more schools in both countries wishing to participate in the Challenge in 2022. Shortlisted for Best Sports Project in the annual Leeds Compassionate City Awards (result pending)
14 Bambisanani Awards presented to three South African schools recognising and rewarding achievement of students
Over 100 university students, from both countries, engaged in a virtual collaboration pilot programme training Physical Educators and Sports Coaches. Initiative led by Leeds Trinity University and the KZN Dept of Higher Education
Global Impact Award received from the University of Leeds
British International School Award presented to St. Mary’s School for work in South Africa as part of the partnership
Invited to become a partner in the British Council’s influential Internationalism Alliance
Several national and international articles have been published promoting the work of the charity

We aim to ensure reserves are maintained at £10,000. We currently hold cash at bank of £72,395, with Trustees considering how best to use this funding with £30,000 being approved in principle to support the construction of a football facility

Our main source of funding has been donations.

The majority of income is applied to the objectives of the charity and we keep all other costs to a minimum. This is achieved by the dedicated trustees that volunteer their time to ensure the success of the charity.

The charity has no guarantees and no debt outstanding at the year end.

Future plans –

Organise a Research and Development visit to South Africa
Organise visits of volunteers from schools/universities in the UK to South Africa to develop and extend Bambisanani programmes and projects (for 2022 and/or2023)
Expand the ‘Cycling to Success’ programme in collaboration with KZN Cycling in more remote rural communities
Expand the Bambisanani International Athletics Challenge for primary schools in both countries and explore other curricula engagement between the schools involved which are driven by sport
Work with South African schools to develop an Indigenous Zulu Games project for UK schools
Develop a programme of work with a Special School in South Africa introducing modified sports
Support Newcastle College to develop links with South Africa
Develop existing university partnerships in both countries to expand the joint training of Physical Education teachers and Sports Coaches
Develop a Bambisanani Award for primary schools in both countries that promotes sport, leadership, volunteering and global citizenship
Explore the possibility of new joint initiatives in collaboration with the British Council, KwaZulu-Natal Department of Sport and Recreation and KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education
Continue to work with a range of partners in South Africa in order to build a sports ground for the Mnyakanya community
Promote internationalism and global citizenship in collaboration with the British Council’s Internationalism Alliance
