## **Objectives and Activities** 

To further or benefit the residents of the Newtown district in Cambridge city, without distinction of sex, sexual orientation, race or of political, religious, or other opinions by associating together the said residents and the local authorities, voluntary and other organisations in a common effort of improving the conditions of life for the residents. The objectives and activities are all designed for the public benefit as set out in the guidance issued by the charity commission. 

## **Achievements and Performance** 

The Signal Box usually hosts a range of community events and activities, all run on a voluntary basis, with emphasis on providing a hub for the whole community, while providing additional support through activities for children, young people and vulnerable or isolated local residents. 

However, from November 5[th] to December 2[nd] 2020 and between January 6[th] and April 12[th] 2021 the Signal Box was closed to the public because of the COVID 19 pandemic. Bookings only started to return once people started becoming more confident with socialising with others in an indoor space. 

Classes including Sword Fighting and Qi-Gong started up again in the summer of 2021, as well as some ‘Hen Do’ activity bookings such as Chocolate Making and Salsa Dancing. These bookings remained much lower upto October with revenue generated at about a quarter of pre-pandemic level. 

The combination of a significantly reduced income and ongoing service charges have meant the charity has performed poorly during this period but is now showing a gradual improvement. 

The manager stepped down from her role on September 27[th] due to a move away from the area. The Trustees started to actively recruit her replacement. 



## **Financial Review** 

Essentially, all the finances needed to run the Signal Box are generated from room hiring. 

The Signal Box ran a managed budgeted deficit of £12,783 over the financial year to 30 September 2021. This was a direct result of having to close for the period from November to December 2020, and January to April 2021 because of COVID 19 restrictions. 

## **Structure, Governance and Management** 

The Signal Box is a registered Charity, and its constitution is that of a Charitable Incorporated Organisation. 

The Trustees meet several times a year to oversee the governance and management of the charity. One part-time employee deals with the day-to-day operations.
