## Chairman’s Remarks.

Welcome, this year will go down as the year of the Ash. Last year I reported that we have become victims of Ash die back. This pernicious disease is fatal for the Ash and as we have a good many of them their removal has been the major, if not sole, activity for volunteers led by Andy Spurr, Ian Mitchel and Charlie Ledward. All this work has been overseen by the Forrestry Commission who need to approve work such as this and in doing so have agreed our Management Plan for the next 10 years. We are grateful for the co-operation we have received from the Brompton Valley Group with whom we have a partnership to fell the trees. Anyone looking at the Depot can see the scale of the task which I regret is not yet complete. Our thanks go to all of them for their enthusiasm and hard work.

One of the advantages of managing such a large area of woodland is that it provides us with a natural source of income. Many of you will know that for many years we have produced and sold logs sourced from the woods. The Ash felling has provided something of a windfall in this respect and we hope to grow our sales in future with due regard for other local producers.

I should take this opportunity to thank all the Friends of the Woodlands for your continued support. We have some very generous donors, whose contributions allow us to maintain the woodlands all through the year. Thank you once again.

I am pleased to report that financially the Trust continues to live with its means and maintain a healthy balance at the bank. Our major purchased this year has been an ATV due to the demise of the old one, the expense of which will appear in next year’s accounts. The ATV ensures that we can get to all parts of the woods whatever the weather to undertake maintenance tasks and in at least one case as a makeshift ambulance.

We are grateful for Sarah Powell for work in ensuring our accounts are in order. This year saw the departure of Rupert Bursell as a Trustee. We would like to thank Rupert for his wise council and legal advice over the years. Rupert has been replaced by Ian Mitchel. Ian is a regular volunteer; we are pleased to welcome him to the Trustee group.

The coming year will see more changes and we hope improvements to your experience in the woodlands and if you would like to be a part of that we are always pleased to welcome new volunteers. You don’t need to be some sort of lumberjack; just make contact and we will help to find you a slot.

I hope to see you in the woods soon.

David Parker

Chairman.
