As the charity trustees of the Trust, you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (“the Act”). I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination, I have followed the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act. ## **Independent examiner's statement** I have completed my examination. Anne has stepped up to take over the day to day running of the rescue and we have subsequently made some changes to how the rescue has been run and the rehoming process has been completely overhauled. We no longer retain adoption applications on file as this was proving to be a time consuming and difficult process as many who had previously wanted to adopt either did not respond to contact, had already adopted, had changed their minds/circumstances or just didn’t want to adopt the dog offered which resulted in many wasted hours trying to find suitable homes – we now invite applicants to apply for specific dogs as they become available for adoption which has been overall successful – the only issue that remains is that some dogs sadly receive no applications (mainly due to age, health or behavioural issues) and we then will do special appeals across all social’s to find a home! We have had to change our Insurance Provider as they introduced a clause stating that all dogs coming into the rescue for Fostering or adoption must have an independent behaviourist report – this is very difficult to comply with both in the timescales of surrender and the costs. Our new provider accepts that we do assess all dogs with our volunteers and if aggression is indicated we do require a behaviourist report prior to accepting the dog into the rescue. The other changes that have helped are putting all our volunteers into a shared Facebook Group where we can make requests for Homechecks, Dog Assessments and Transport and many of our lovely volunteers will often cover these even if they hadn’t originally signed up for those roles! We have an ongoing issue with recruiting Fosterers especially those who are dog free and will continue to explore options for recruiting. We attended Crufts this year and are waiting to hear if invited next year or possibly will attend Discover Dogs We had our annual Rescue Rally in May at Lutterworth – a joint rally with a Boxer Rescue and are planning for next year's event and hoping with advertising more of our supporters will be able to join us for a fun filled weekend! ## **2.Treasurer Report - Simon O’Rourke** ## **See summary of accounts 2021/2022 below** Please remember that these accounts are for the period 1st Nov 2021 until 31st Oct 2022. The trustees have agreed to bring the AGM forward next year to make the accounts more relevant when they are discussed. The overall impact of the year on our funds was a slight net decrease – a big increase in expenditure was offset by nearly as large rise in income. The biggest cost as in previous years has been Vet bills, both in terms of a general increase and in some specific dogs coming into the rescue with severe health issues. Part of this latter increase has been reduced by trying to get donations specifically for named dogs, mostly through appeals via Facebook. We are also starting to see more dogs with behavioural issues possibly as the impact of lockdown **October 2018** 6 **IER** starts to show in surrenders. As the charity doesn’t yet differentiate between physical and mental treatments these also appear as Vet bills, this separation may be something to consider in future years especially if the number of dogs in long term sanctuary increases. The funds have increased significantly since the end of this year as fundraising and sales have started to increase following the appointment of a specific fundraising Trustee. In the year of these accounts there has been significant contributions from the Gusdog draws, and it is worth recognising the wonderful contribution Gusdog and his team have made to our fundraising - £14,000 this financial year and we do wish a happy retirement as he reduces his workload for the Rescue. There is also the continuing support of Coventry University marketing students who have again contributed significantly by using UKBTR as their selected charity for their fundraising activity. The annual rally still contributes and there are the continuing sales of the annual Christmas Cards and Calendars. We continue to pay significant charges to PayPal for those payment and donations not using Friends and Family option – if donations could be encouraged via Wonderful.org and select UKBTR this platform automatically prompt Gift-aid and there are no charges to the Rescue. Finally, I would like to thank Karen Dean for again agreeing to act as the Independent Examiner for submission of the accounts to the Charity Commission. ## **3.Election of Committee** Beth proposed that the following Trustees are re-elected: Simon O’Rourke (Treasurer) Moira Mosley Beth Bartlett Anne Robinson – to be appointed as Chairperson. To appoint Rose Hunt as new Trustee (Fundraising) No objections raised – all appointed as above. Special thanks are made to Beth Bartlett for her contribution to the Rescue as the Chairperson for the past 9 years since the Rescues inception. ## **4.Rehoming Report – Anne Robinson** Within the financial year Nov 21 to Oct 22, we saw 50 dogs surrendered into the rescue, which is 3 more than the previous financial year. We have seen dogs being surrendered for a variety of reasons, from aggression, change in personal circumstances, financial costs and of course several Covid pups. Out of the 50 dogs, 3 of them became permanent Sanctuary residents with Joy at the BirkettSmith Sanctuary. The 3 dogs were unable to be rehomed due to their issues and they are all happy and safe with Joy and her team. We have 1 dog who has recently completed his rehab and will be looking for his new home soon. We continue to be very busy with calls, e-mails and surrender forms from people who are considering surrendering their dogs but decide not to for a variety of reasons. Every person who makes contact with us receives a phone call and on some occasions one of our volunteer behaviourists will speak with owners and offer advice, with the hope they can work with and keep their dog at home. **October 2018** 7 **IER** The rescue implemented changes with regards to rehoming. We no long keep applications on file and now invite people to apply for specific dogs. The reason we made this change was due to the amount of time spent contacting the applicants on file and getting no response. Our new way means people can apply for dogs they are really interested in and we have found it works really well and cuts down the adoption process dramatically. Another change we introduced was straight to adoption rather than all dogs going into a foster home for assessment. With a shortage of foster homes, we had to rethink how we dealt with dogs coming in and we realized that not all dogs needed to be assessed for a period as they had no real issues. We made the decision to offer straight to adoption, where dogs stay in their home until we find them their new home and it is working very well. This means we can keep foster homes free for those dogs who need a little guidance and help before moving to their new home. We do still have a shortage of dog free foster homes and are looking at ways to try and recruit more. Moira, Beth and I realized we could not continue to do everything on our own, so we put a request out for volunteers to come on board and form a rehoming team. I would like to officially welcome Abby Davis, Emma Swift, Emma Bell, Jason Swift, Emi Richards, Tina Knowles and Michelle Payne to the rescue team and pass on our huge thanks for all the hard work and dedication they have shown the rescue. They are a fantastic team and both the Rescue and the dogs would be lost without them. I also need to officially welcome Kelly Magill as our foster/volunteer coordinator and thank her for her dedication and hard work to the rescue. As always, we need to pass our huge thanks on to every single volunteer who home checks, assesses and transports for the rescue. Quite often we put requests out at very short notice and our volunteers are always there to help us and the dogs. A special thanks to Mick Squires who has transported so many dogs for us, even on his wife’s birthday! And a special thanks to our foster homes who continue to help our dogs by taking them into their home and caring for them. Moving forward the rescue continues to be busy with more and more of our beloved breed being surrendered but we have a fantastic team who are there, 7 days a week, to do what we can to help the dogs. ## **5.Fundraising Report – Rose Hunt** The weekly auction has gone from strength to strength and is 60% up this year. We started the Lottery and it has raised £1,000 so far this year and we are hoping to increase this further – having a guaranteed income is so important. Gus Dog continues to bring in £1,000 a month and we want to thank him and his helpers for their ongoing support, following his semi-retirement we would like to welcome Remy and Pablo who are gallantly stepping up to take over the Gus balls and we all look forward to their antics! A special thanks to Christine and Emma who are behind the Socials Team including the website and our growing Instagram following and this growth has led to increased donations and support which is great. Merchandise – has had a massive overhaul and new items will be coming soon! Xmas Cards – we sold over 100 packs last year and it was a great success, we will be starting the search for the models for this year's cards later this month. A huge thank you to Amy Read who made our rescue calendar again last year and we will soon be looking for high resolution photographs for next year's calendar. **October 2018** 8 **IER** The Christmas Market planning is already underway, and we have even more participants to add to what has proven to be a very successful fundraiser during the run up to Christmas. Anne offered the Rescues huge thanks to Rose for her tireless fundraising this past year and to acknowledge that we were at crisis point – our bank balance was dwindling fast and with the level of vet, behaviourist and sanctuary fees we had serious concerns about our ability to help all the dogs we had coming in but our balance has doubled over the pat ear and is at the highest we have ever been which is amazing and means we can continue to offer the level of support we want to ensure all the dogs surrendered get what they need for their futures! Unlike many of the large rescue charities we do cover pre-existing conditions for adoptions where insurance cannot be taken, we also ensure all treatments, vaccinations, neutering costs etcetera are provided with a lifetime commitment to all our UKBTR dogs. As mentioned previously we are moving our AGM to January which will enable our accounts to be signed off and be available for us to apply for funding and grants which at the moment we have been unable to access. ## **6.Any Other Business** Anne- we are looking to recruit more Trustees for the rescue to ensure we have the support we need to continue to grow and they will have specific roles with the rescue team and we expect to appoint 3 at the AGM in January. Rose – expressed thanks to Beth, Anne and Moira for the work they have done as Trustees especially as demand has grown hugely and the rescue has had to adapt and change to ensure it can meet the needs of the dogs and recognising it was becoming unsustainable without recruiting more volunteers to help. Michelle – special thanks to Anne for supporting the new rehoming team.
