‘THE SCIENCE’ for

Australia Art in Nature

Sisters Grimm delivered the educational outreach element of this bilateral STFC UK/Australia AgroClimate Space Programme.

Australia Art in Nature New Category theme ‘The Ecosystem of Agriculture using Earth Observation’

We identified four pillars of this ecosystem; Weather, Plants & Trees, Animals (with a focus on livestock) and Water.

This was be the basis from which we created the content with accompanying activities shared with young people via all our digital platforms and the campaign for Art in Nature. All resources were made available on the online portal for ‘The Science’ within the Australia Art in Nature website.

The ambition is to inspire young people to interact consciously with Earth Observation data, to develop their understanding of what makes up the ecosystem of Agriculture. Achieved through the journey of creating their own artwork for the opportunity to participate in a Sisters Grimm music video and global online galley.

Supporting Climate change education, mental well being, inclusivity and equality, creativity, quality family time with Australian nature represented in all the artworks.

ART IN NATURE

Co-founders of Sisters Grimm, Grammy nominated composer and painter Ella Spira MBE and former Royal Ballet ballerina Pietra Mello-Pittman MBE, believe environmental awareness begins with learning to appreciate and respect nature, this led to the duo creating the major global movement ‘Art in Nature, tackling Climate Change’

The programme is a mass participation social impact initiative offering young people the opportunity to be featured in Sisters Grimm’s online gallery and next Music Video and seen by millions.

Supporting Climate change education, mental well being, inclusivity and equality, creativity, quality family time with Australian nature represented in all the artworks.

Young people were free to represent their experience in nature, environmental or sustainable ideas however they chose from creating a painting, drawing, mixed media collage, or 3D model from any medium so long as a digital photo of the final piece could be emailed.

This global movement uses mainstream arts to deliver information on the environment. The project uses data and science to inspire and educate participants on climate change and the many positive decisions and choices available that can have positive impact on the climate.

All submissions are displayed in an online gallery, every young person receives a signed certificate of participation and had the potential to be featured in a music video for a song co-written by Corinne Gibbons and Grammy nominated Ella Spira MBE. Sisters Grimm who released their new music video for Australia Art In Nature on Tuesday 22nd March 2022 for World Water Day. Their music video was made up only of artwork submissions from young people across Australia.

Artwork:

The Rainforest

Region: New South Wales

Comments:

Peter is a blind student. He explored rainforest leaves by touching them and then pricking out their shape on the paper with a pinwheel. Peter then used his sense of touch to draw in the lines and colour the shapes. Artwork was produced by the student as part of a unit on Australian environments

“The art work ‘Where the wind blows’ was made to represent the area I live in and grew up around. Around here it is common to have dust storms and dusty days especially during the drought. The windmill in the artwork shows the wind as well as the dust in the background. Additionally, windmills are supposed to represent life, serenity, resilience, self-sufficiency, and perseverance in a harsh environment, something that all families in rural Australia can relate to. How I interpret a windmill's meaning is that no matter how long it goes without any wind to keep it turning, when there is wind again it will start spinning. I tie this to the drought that has been experienced the last 9 years in the area.” Katelyn Worsnop, age 13, Charleville School of Distance Education

Drawing on traditional Japanese art forms, Mark Baldwin unites multi disciplinary performers in this work.

A huge critical success, this show was awarded a Grammy nomination, and was featured on the UK’s Royal Variety Performance and Prince Harry’s concert.
