TRUSTEES REPORT SOCIAL IMPACT Year ending OUTREACH REPORT 30th SEPTEMBER 2020 SUMMARY

INTRODUCTION

We have a vision of a society that celebrates diversity, in which individuals are inspired, access their emotions, and are empowered to take their own decisions. Sisters Grimm aims to enhance empathy, self-expression and inspiration among children and young people by offering them access to high quality entertaining shows and related workshops, that help to construct frameworks for their creative development and activity.

Too many young people do not have access to knowledge about careers in the entertainment industry or the opportunity to see high quality arts venues, shows or events.

They might be held back by their socio-economic background, where they live, their health, or a lack of access to creative subjects through their education.

SISTERS GRIMM SOCIAL IMPACT PROGRAMME

Sisters Grimm believe young people are entitled to more.

We want to show young people that they have a place in this sector. We want young people to see performers that look like them on a West End stage. We want them to meet the cast and creatives who make this happen, and to realise that the route into this industry is not a straight line, but a journey of many different diversions and cross roads. We want them to walk through the doors of the world’s most prestigious venues, and to say with confidence that they belong.

TOTAL PARTICIPANTS SINCE 2017 6,000

POSITIVE IMPACTS ON:

SOCIAL IMPACT JOURNEY 2017:

Sisters Grimm piloted their social impact programme as an act of community cohesion around the tragic events of Grenfell Tower and London’s terrorist attacks. 2000 children and young people and some the Grenfell volunteers saw Voices of the Amazon for free that Summer.

 We brought a large group of children and they were on their feet at the end... it’s ignited a real love of music and dance. It was an amazing show and we felt very privileged to be there.

WEST END: Following the resoundingly positive feedback, in 2019 for the West End shows of INALA, Sisters Grimm partnered with the Prince’s Trust founded in 1976 by Charles, Prince of Wales to help vulnerable young people get their lives on track. 1,200 school students received amazing enrichment opportunities around the event. The young people experienced a Q&A with the cast, an in-school workshop and a seat at a performance of the show at the Peacock Theatre in London’s West End.

SOCIAL IMPACT 2019: JOURNEY

Positive Impact 100%

of teachers and group leaders have asked to be notified when the next show is available as it has such a positive impact on their students.

SOCIAL IMPACT JOURNEY

2019:

SINGAPORE: the first international premiere of the outreach programme with 500 beneficiaries.

ROYAL ALBERT HALL LONDON: On 23rd October the Royal Albert Hall welcomed 1,300 young people and their families to watch INALA for free. Community groups, school groups and young people with additional needs were seated throughout the auditorium, participating as equals in this Gala event. Sisters Grimm appointed Keelan Johnson who was taking part in a Prince’s Trust Team Programme to be an Ambassador for INALA and present the behind the scenes documentary film at the Royal Albert Hall.

CHINA: Sisters Grimm expand their programme on their premiere tour of China engaging and collaborating with Ministers for Education, local government officials, major universities and NGO’s. Another 1000 participants experienced INALA and new ties were forged between theatres and universities allowing for deeper engagement and audience growth. Sisters Grimm were also invited to Educational residencies and to join Arts University advisory boards.

2020 and beyond:

We want to offer more and more young people the chance to be at our shows, to meet the creatives and cast, to have a workshop with a member of the company, and eventually to be part of the industry too.

PREVIOUS PROGRAMME OUTCOMES

Special Educational Needs

INALA schools programme was an important intervention for SEN students who find traditional education spaces difficult. They were able to find new ways of reacting to art that wouldn’t have been discovered in a classroom. Students felt excited and included.

A boy who never really smiles or goes out sat with me and was up clapping and smiling.

A parent of a student who says very little in school sent me an email saying ‘he had a great time was really glad he went, he sent me lots of photos with him and his friends and of the stage and rehearsals, he even face timed his little brother, so he could see. He also kept in contact letting me know each stage of his journey and evening. And talked about it when he got home. Thank you for giving him this Opportunity.

PREVIOUS PROGRAMME OUTCOMES

Wellbeing

It is incredibly difficult to confirm that access to the arts has an impact on mental health and wellbeing, particularly over such a short time frame. However, one piece of feedback highlights this correlation in one student:

One girl told another teacher “I had the best sleep ever!”. Now this might sound strange, but she was actually saying that watching the dancing and the music beating through her body just made her so relaxed that she felt totally rested at the end, more so than she has felt at home in a very long time.

Concentration

Although it is not possible to prove whether visiting the production of INALA improved students concentration at school, a teacher had this to say of her students:

Many of these students can find a lesson sitting down a real challenge but they all managed to be focused for the whole show. This is a true testament to just how good you are.

ROYAL ALBERT HALL SOCIAL IMPACT REPORT OCTOBER 2019

INTRODUCTION

Too many young people do not have access to high quality arts venues, shows or events. They might be held back by their socio-economic background, where they live, their health, or a lack of access to creative subjects through their education.

Sisters Grimm are proud that prior to the RoyalALbert Hall show 3,500 young people had attended a performance for free since 2017 through its social impact work.

For the West End shows in May 2019, Sisters Grimm partnered with the Prince’s Trust to offer 1,000 school students a Q&A with the cast, an in-school workshop and a seat at a performance of the show at the Peacock Theatre in London.

On 23rd October at the Royal Albert Hall welcomed 1,100 young people and their families in a single night to watch INALA for free. Community groups, school groups and young people with additional needs were seated throughout the auditorium, participating as equals in this Gala event.

This marked the next phase of our social impact mission.

In the coming months and years we want to offer more and more young people the chance to be at our shows, to meet the cast, to have a workshop with a member of the company - and eventually to be on that stage too.

The show was really good, the music and singing and dancing was fantastic, it’s actually nice to be able to go to the theatre as a family and other community members. Thank you for the free tickets and the opportunity for the kids to be involved in different experiences. We are open to going to more shows in the future.

FAST project

For all our young people it was the first time at the Royal Albert Hall, they took lots of photos to show to all their friends. One of them said “one of best days of my life” another one said “I forgot all the problems I had tonight”. All of them have gone through a lot in their live’s, leaving their home country for a safe place but not having their family is hard, however on the night of the show they forgot about their problems and they had a brilliant time. Thank you so much for the opportunity, tonight. It was one of those nights I’ll tell my children about. Everything was just perfect, the choreography was well executed, the music scores were brilliant. I enjoyed every bit of it. Thanks so much.

That was a beautiful show and everyone loved the workshop too!! So many thanks for everything!!!

My friend’s daughter said to me ‘I’ve lived for 8 years and this has been the best day so far!’ The whole cast, dancers, singers and musicians were all outstanding and it came together to create a captivating piece. We’ve come home singing and dancing! Thank you!!!

Know that you’ve really brightened up so many peoples lives here in Kunming! Thanks so much!

It is absolutely a wonderful show and is full of love, strength and passion! Thank you so much for this opportunity for children and parents from three organizations. Some parents said they rarely have the opportunity to accompany their kids for an outing due to their busy work! Some are the first time for the whole family going out together!

Thanks for such a gorgeous show. I really love it and hope there’ll be more shows in China from Sister Grimm.

INALA & Social Impact

This year we launched a partnership with The Princes Trust for a careers opportunity initiative, which saw over 1,000 young people from lower socio economic areas attend INALA during the run in the West End where they joined the company for their warm up on stage, had a short talk from different key team members, they got to ask any questions they had and then they watched the show alongside all the other audience members. The ambition of the programme is to break down barriers, to inspire and help educate young people about the career opportunities within live entertainment. There was also an educational piece for other audience members around inclusivity which we are confident translated and was appreciated. The energy those groups brought into the theatre was special and the reaction and feedback was truly wonderful and overwhelming

They enjoyed the visit so much that they all attended twice, one of the students was reduced to tears at the end of the performance. The group lead told SG that many of the students struggle with time management and motivation, for them to attend the production twice is a testament to the impact of the production and how welcoming the team were. They often feel unwelcome and forgotten by society and at the show they were welcomed and celebrated.

“A boy who never really smiles or goes out sat with me and was up clapping and smiling.”

“A parent of a student who says very little in school sent me an email saying ‘he had a great time was really glad he went, he sent me lots of photos with him and his friends and of the stage and rehearsals, he even face timed his little brother, so he could see. He also kept in contact letting me know each stage of his journey and evening. And talked about it when he got home. Thank you for giving him this opportunity.’”

Wellbeing

It is incredibly difficult to confirm that access to the arts has an impact on mental health and wellbeing, particularly over such a short time frame. However, one piece of feedback highlights this correlation in one student:

“One girl told another teacher “I had the best sleep ever!”. Now this might sound strange, but she was actually saying that watching the dancing and the music beating through her body just made her so relaxed that she felt totally rested at the end, more so than she has felt at home in a very long time.”

Concentration

Although it is not possible to prove whether visiting the production of INALA improved students concentration at school, a teacher had this to say of her students:

“Many of these students can find a lesson sitting down a real challenge but they all managed to be focused for the whole show. This is a true testament to just how good you are.”

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRODUCERS OF

INALA means abundance of goodwill in Zulu. Through true collaboration, the show was born out of a desire to unite different cultures, artistic disciplines, backgrounds and celebrate diversity, giving an equal voice to all in one space.

At the very beginning in 2009, we met Ladysmith Black Mambazo for the first time and shared our desire to collaborate on a new show in a new way. We experienced each others performances. We saw their performance at Cadogan Hall and with support from Lord Tony Hall, they attended a Royal Ballet performance at the Royal Opera House where Pietra was performing. Everything then hinged on whether the dream of a music writing collaboration between Joseph Shabalala, Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Ella Spira could come true.

In 2010, Ella first sat at the piano in the Durban Playhouse, surrounded by the nine, all male choir members of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, and she played the first four chords she had prepared. Joseph closed his eyes, tilted back his head and sang the song title words ‘USIZI’. When asked what the song meant Joseph explained, When asked what the song meant, Joseph explained it’s about perseverance and resilience in the face of challenge and grief. This is ‘Joseph’s message’, the only English speaking moment in the show, spoken tonight by Soweto Gospel Choir member Mary Mulovhedsi. From this seed, the show grew gradually, one song at a time and to this day we feel Usizi is one of the most poignant moments in the show. Usizi is the message in, and the story of INALA.

The narrative is an interpretation of a community at the beginning of a day. We get a sense of different characters, a pair of lovers, family etc. One character falls out of step with the rest of the community, not partaking, he spirals and loses his way, going to the city where he runs into trouble. Act 2 is about redemption, forgiveness and the meaning of home; he returns to his community and is welcomed back with open arms.

We are honoured to welcome you to the Royal Albert Hall tonight, in Black History Month and on World Ballet Day, to experience the emotion of INALA for yourselves.

“They move so beautifully and rhythmically,” adds Baldwin. “And they can
tap dance like you wouldn’t believe!”
“I’ve listened back to the recordings,” says Spira, “and what gospel
singing does is it pushes slightly ahead of the beat. Whereas Ladysmith
Black Mambazo sat ever so slightly behind the beat. So it adds a whole
different level of excitement. It’s like a big, bright, massive sunrise.” Baba
agrees: “You can feel the music going through your body, it’s an incredible
experience,” she says.
In addition to Baba, there are more new dancers, including Brazilian Hicaro
Nicolai (“He’s gorgeous, just made for this show,” says Mello-Pittman) and
Manchester-born Nahum McLean, who comes with a background in hip hop
and African dance and training at the Ailey School in New York (“He’s
dynamite,” says Baldwin.). The cast are deliberately individual – there’s no
conformity of height, build or training – but what they have in common
is a connection to the material. “We don’t just audition them, we
interview them,” says Mello-Pittman. “We ask them why they want
to be on the show, how they connect to it, how they feel about the
music and the themes.”
One performer from the original cast who returns is South African
ballet dancer Ashleigh Wilson (now based in the US). She grew up with
Ladysmith Black Mambazo’s music. “It takes me back home, and the
same thing happens when I perform INALA,” she says. It’s not only that
music that whisks her back to Cape Town. “In the sound design they’ve
integrated a lot of the sounds you hear in South Africa, whether it’s crickets
or drum beats,” she says. “I remember people coming out of the theatre and
crying: ‘The crickets, the crickets!’. These sounds are really special.”
But more than just homely nostalgia, the show has something to say for
South Africa today. “For me it’s also a show about humanity and how such
a diverse cast can connect in one voice,” says Wilson. “That feels really
similar to the way I perceive South Africa as it heals from its past, trying
to move forward with a new generation, uniting different colours and
cultures and I think that touches people’s hearts a lot.”
This may not only be a message for South Africa, thinks Mello-
Pittman. “INALA is a story about togetherness, home and
community,” she says. “Given that this show is going out just
after Brexit, I think there couldn’t be a more poignant time
for it. There’s a sadness in some of the songs but it’s an
uplifting journey. It feels like everything’s going to be ok if
we all stick together. We’re all in it together,
we’re all just people, we share the same
space – that’s the message.”

Soweto Gospel Choir was formed in September 2002 to celebrate the unique and inspirational power of South African Gospel music. Drawing on the very best talent from the many churches in and around Soweto, the choir was created to share the joy of faith and tradition through music. Rehearsing in a small garage next to the house of the Choir’s founding Musical Director, the late David Mulovhedzi, the choir has come from the humblest of beginnings, a small building on a dirt road in the back-streets of the township of Soweto through to the internationally renown music phenomenon.

Soweto Gospel Choir’s first album ‘Voices from Heaven’ was recorded within the first month of the choir’s formation and reached No.1 on Billboards World Music Chart just 3 weeks after it’s release in North America. In the following years Soweto Gospel Choir have won many coveted International awards including two prestigious Grammy Awards for Best Traditional World Music for their albums Blessed (2007) & African Spirit (2008), as well as their 2009 Oscar Best Song nomination for their collaboration with Peter Gabriel for his song ‘Down to Earth’ the theme for the Disney Pixar movie Wall-E.

In addition, Soweto Gospel Choir received a 2010 Emmy for their collaboration on 3 songs with U2 on ESPN’S promotional campaign for the FIFA World Cup.

Soweto Gospel Choir’s close association with Nelson Mandela has seen them become Ambassadors for his AID’s awareness campaign ‘46664’ which has taken them around the world, performing at 46664 concerts with famous artists including Aretha Franklin, Steve Wonder, Bono, Queen and Annie Lennox.

Inspired by their patron Archbishop Tutu, Soweto Gospel Choir have been international ambassadors for their nation and have performed at many of South Africa’s most historically significant occasions including the State Funeral of the late President Mandela, his memorial at St Paul’s Cathedral in London and at Winnie Mandela’s 2018 memorial service.

Over the years Soweto Gospel Choir have collaborated, performed and recorded with many of the worlds greatest music artists including Robert Plant, Josh Groban, Angelique Kidjo, Peter Gabriel, Amy Winehouse, Jimmy Cliff, Celine Dion, Stevie Wonder as well as South Africa’s own Johnny Clegg.

Following Soweto Gospel Choir’s 3rd Grammy Award win, for Best Traditional Music album in February 2019, they are thrilled to be able to celebrate their love of music and of Africa in this extraordinary production which is INALA.

Joseph Shabalala & Ladysmith Black Mambazo
Co-Composer
Ladysmith Black Mambazo,
South Africa’s ‘Cultural
Ambassadors to the
World’ so designated by
President Nelson Mandela,
was assembled in the early
1960s, by Joseph Shabalala.
A radio broadcast in 1970
opened the door to their
first record contract – the
beginning of an ambitious
discography that currently
includes more than fifty
recordings, fifteen Grammy
Award nominations and four Grammy Award wins. Ladysmith
Black Mambazo’s 2013 CD, Live: Singing For Peace Around The
World was awarded the Grammy Award as Best World Music
Album for 2013.
Their philosophy is as much about preservation of musical
heritage as it is about entertainment. The group sings a
traditional style of music called isicathamiya (is-cot-a-ME-Ya),
which developed in the mines of South Africa, where black
workers were taken by rail to work far away from their homes
and their families. Poorly housed and paid worse, the mine
workers would entertain themselves after a six-day week by
singing songs into the wee hours on Sunday morning. When
the miners returned to the homelands, this musical tradition
returned with them.
During the 1970’s Ladysmith Black Mambazo established
themselves as the most successful singing group in South
Africa. In the mid-1980s, Paul Simon visited South Africa
and incorporated the group’s rich harmonies into his famous
Graceland album – a landmark recording that was considered
seminal in introducing world music to mainstream audiences,
selling over twenty million albums and winning a Grammy
Award for Best Album of the Year.
In addition to their work with Simon, Ladysmith Black
Mambazo has recorded with numerous artists including
Stevie Wonder, Dolly Parton, Sarah McLachlan, Josh Groban,
Emmylou Harris, Melissa Etheridge, and many others.
They have provided film soundtrack material for Disney’s
The Lion King, Part II, Eddie Murphy’s Coming To America,
Marlon Brando’s A Dry White Season, James Earl Jones’ Cry
The Beloved Country and Clint Eastwood’s Invictus. A film
documentary titled On Tip Toe: Gentle Steps to Freedom, the
Story of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, was nominated for an
Academy Award. They have even appeared on Broadway and
have been nominated for Tony Awards.
Nelson Mandela asked the group to join him on his trip
to Oslo, Norway, in 1993, when he was awarded the Nobel
Peace Prize. As well, when Mr Mandela was inaugurated
as the countries first black President, he asked the group
to perform at the celebration. Ladysmith Black Mambazo
carries a message of Peace, Love and Harmony as they travel
the world year after year.
