Phil’s Kids Trustees’ Annual Report Year Ended 31 October 2020

Objectives and Activities

The objects of the Charitable Incorporated Organisation are:

  1. To advance the health of individuals and families of people at risk of Huntington’s Disease (HD) and those already suffering by, in particularly but not exclusively, promoting safe, medically sanctioned and proven methods of reproduction for people at risk or suffering from HD to have HD-free children.

  2. Providing the opportunity for those at risk or suffering from HD to access medically sanctioned and proven methods for the reproduction of HD-free children. Helping to relieve the suffering, emotional and psychological, of people suffering or at risk of HD surrounding their reproductive choices. At this time the geographical area is limited to the United Kingdom.

Achievements and Performance

Our previous financial year ended on a positive note with our CEO being asked to be a speaker at the Huntington’s Disease Youth Organization (HDYO) in Scotland in May 2020. We were able to give out another grant, and more and more people were finding ways to fundraise for us and so many donated. All seemed on track for a banner year. However, in the beginning of 2020 Covid19 happened and activity for all including those at Phil’s Kids came to an abrupt halt. The HDYO conference was cancelled as were several fundraising ventures. It was bleak.

In the early days of 2020, another HD colleague gave our contact details to a television production team. The researchers were looking for a young couple at risk to discuss their experience of discussing and deciding about reproduction. Many calls and emails later produced an agreement to take part from our one of our most ardent supporters. More than a few times this couple has been the face of our targeted clientele with selflessness and dignity.

Despite the pandemic, the Board decided to move ahead with what we could and a grant that we awarded brought superb news in February. A phone call came to say that the recipients were expecting a baby.

Even though we were unable to participate in many of our fundraising events our volunteers continued the trend of raising funds for Phil’s Kids by modifying and adapting their challenges:

  1. Our tv interview couple requested that any fee they were promised should be donated, in full, to Phil’s Kids. This generosity led to out largest single household donation.

  2. The at-risk member of the aforementioned couple also gave an interview to a national woman’s magazine and once again donated the fee directly to us.

  3. As one long standing couple had to bring an end to their monthly donation another hero stepped in and began their own monthly donation.

  4. The Facebook fundraising efforts proved, again, to be a good and consistent method of fundraising. Even when times were hard and funds tight people were still willing to give what they could.

  1. One of the greatest adaptations came from three wonderful young men who had originally signed up to compete in the Prudential Surrey to London 100. As this was cancelled they all three decided to cycle, on trainers, in their own house whilst streaming their efforts for people to watch and donate. Each completed 100 miles at home in their homes and travelled not on inch.

  2. Unfortunately we were again unable to host our annual Backyard Bonanza. Plans were made, changed and then finally abandoned until it is safe for us to do so.
