Hospital Radio Chelmsford is a CIO run entirely by volunteers without any remuneration to any member, volunteer or trustee. Recruitment is via free advertising and events throughout the year to attract new members who have an interest in radio broadcasting, administration, or engineering with the sole aim of entertaining patients in hospital. Trustees are selected from the membership of the charity.
The purpose of the charity is to provide entertainment to patients and staff in the hospital. Relevant public service announcements are also broadcasted via the service, and information is also contained in a patient handbook, the ‘Smile Magazine’ which is produced without cost to the charity, and a donation is also made by the publisher. The latest issue was published in Autumn 2023
The charity receives regular feedback from patients and employees as to the benefit it provides. It is also frequently recognised in the national HBA awards for its quality and performance.
The charity has no debts, and sufficient reserves to cover the majority of situations. No funds are held as a custodian trustee. The charity relocated off site in 2020 due to Covid restrictions, and following development at Broomfield Hospital is still awaiting a suitable site to be found for its return.
