## **TRUSTEES' REPORT** 

## **FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 MARCH 2024** 

The trustees present their annual report and financial statements for the year ended 31 March 2024. 

The receipts and payments account t has been prepared in accordance with the guidance issued by the Charity Commission and comply with the charity's constitution, the Charities Act 2011. 

## _Objectives and activities_ 

The principal purpose of the Church is the advancement of the Christian faith guided by the principles of the Baptist denomination. The Church may also carry out other charitable purposes which are compatible with the Christian faith in the UK and/or other parts of the world. 

The Church's activities may include, but are not restricted to: 

- regular public worship, prayer, Bible study, preaching and teaching 

- baptism as defined in the Baptist Union's Declaration of Principle 

- the Communion of the Lord's supper which shall normally be observed at least once a month 

- evangelism and mission, locally, regionally, nationally and internationally 

- the teaching, encouragement, welcome and inclusion of young people 

- nurture and growth of Christian disciples 

- education and training for Christian and community service 

- giving and encouraging pastoral care 

- supporting and encouraging charitable social action in the United Kingdom and abroad 

- encouraging relationships with and supporting other Christians. 

The trustees have paid due regard to guidance issued by the Charity Commission in deciding what activities the charity should undertake. 

## _Achievements and performance_ 

Fortnightly public worship meetings have continued throughout the year.  Community outreach has continued throughout the year with activities including the English classes, sewing classes, support groups and "Food with Friends" continuing on a weekly or monthly basis.  We started a weekly scripture reading group and made available one to one mentoring both for those exploring the Christian faith and for those continuing their journey.  We continue to see testimonies of personal transformation in those we are serving. 

## _Plans for future periods_ 

We believe that to better reflect the nature of the church and the community that we serve the name of the charity should be changed to "Crossharbour Community Church"  (This was approved by a vote of the church membership in accordance with our constitution, and confirmed by the Charity Commission in July 2024).  We are planning to move premises into a nearby building that has been used as a cafe for a number of years by another Christian charity.  The move will give us more opportunities to interact with the community, and a more flexible space for the activities of the church.  We also planned local activities as part of an outreach week in the Summer of 2024.

## _Financial review_ 

The receipts and payments for the year and the assets and liabilities at the end of the year are summarised in the attached accounts. 

It is the policy of the charity that unrestricted funds which have not been designated for a specific use should be maintained at a level equivalent to between three and six month’s expenditure. The trustees consider that reserves at this level will ensure that, in the event of a significant drop in funding, they will be able to continue the charity’s current activities while consideration is given to ways in which additional funds may be raised. This level of reserves has been maintained throughout the year. 

Any unrestricted funds which are not needed for short-term working capital are deposited with The London Baptist Property Board. The trustees consider that this gives an appropriate balance between achieving an investment return, capital protection, liquidity and ensuring that the funds are used for purposes aligned with the church's charitable objects. 

The trustees have assessed the major risks to which the charity is exposed, and are satisfied that systems are in place to mitigate exposure to the major risks. 

## _Structure, governance and management_ 

The charity was established by a charitable trust and constitution which were updated on 7 June 2015, prior to that date the church was a charity as part of the Baptist Union of GB. This has been replaced by a new constitution adopted by the charity so that it could transfer to a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) which was registered by the Charity Commission in July 2024. The trustees believe that the Christian faith is of benefit to both individuals and society as a whole, since it works towards a holistic vision of a transformed and peace-filled community and the flourishing of humankind and all of creation. 

The trustees who served during the year and up to the date of signature of the financial statements were:

The church is affiliated to the Baptist Union of GB, one of the mainstream Christian churches in the UK.

## **Independent examiner’s report to the trustees of  Quaystone Christian Church** 

I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of Quaystone Christian Church (the Trust) for the year ended 31 March 2024. 

## **Responsibilities and basis of report** 

As the charity trustees of the Trust you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the Act’). 

I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act. 

## **Independent examiner’s statement** 

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect: 

1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the Trust as required by section 130 of the Act; or 

2. the accounts do not accord with those records. 

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

- **1** _Accounting policies Charity information_ 

Quaystone Christian Church is an unincorporated charity formed by a trust deed and constitution which were updated in June 2015.  This has been replaced by a new constitution adopted by the charity so that it could transfer to a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) which was registered by the Charity Commission in July 2024. 

- **1.1** _Accounting convention_ 

The accounts have been prepared on a receipts and payments basis in accordance with the charity's constitution, the Charities Act 2011. 

- **1.2** _Going concern_ 

At the time of approving the financial statements, the trustees have a reasonable expectation that the charity has adequate resources to continue in operational existence for the foreseeable future. 

- **1.3** _Charitable funds_ 

Unrestricted funds are available for use at the discretion of the trustees in furtherance of their charitable objectives. 

Restricted funds are subject to specific conditions by donors as to how they may be used. The purposes and uses of the restricted funds are set out in the notes to the financial statements. 

- **1.4** _Tangible fixed assets_ 

Tangible fixed assets are initially measured at cost and subsequently measured at cost or valuation, net of depreciation and any impairment losses. 

Tangible fixed assets are stated at cost less depreciation. Freehold property is stated at market valuation.  Depreciation is provided at rates calculated to write off the cost less estimated residual value of each asset over its expected useful life, as follows: 

Land and buildings 2% p.a. on buildings and improvements Plant and machinery 20% - 33.33% p.a. on cost Fixtures, fittings & equipment 10% p.a. on cost 

The gain or loss arising on the disposal of an asset is determined as the difference between the sale proceeds and the carrying value of the asset and is recognised in the statement of financial activities. 

- **1.5** _Impairment of fixed assets_ 

At each reporting end date, the charity reviews the carrying amounts of its tangible assets to determine whether there is any indication that those assets have suffered an impairment loss. If any such indication exists, the recoverable amount of the asset is estimated in order to determine the extent of the impairment loss (if any).

## **7** _Trustees_ 

None of the trustees (or any persons connected with them) received any remuneration during the year (2023: 0). No trustees were refunded expenses (2023: Nil). 

Donations received from the trustees via Stewardship or Charities Aid Foundation during the year ended 31 March 2024 amounted to £6,660. 

The church made charitable grants to Turn Trust amounting to £13,200 during the year on the basis that its mission activities are in line with Quaystone Christian Church’s charitable objectives. Rachel Redfearn (one of the trustees) is employed part-time by Turn Trust. Quaystone Christian Church has frequently given grants to other charities involved in similar Christian work, and the money Rachel Redfearn receives from Turn Trust is not linked in any way to the money given by Quaystone to Turn Trust. The trustees consulted with advisors prior to making these grants and believe that this payment does not represent any kind of benefit to, or remuneration for, Rachel Redfearn. 

Turn Trust lease the “manse”, a residential owned by the charity, at a peppercorn rent to provide accommodation for Christian workers who support the church’s outreach in the local community.
