CHLTON POLDEN HALL CIO – CHAIRMAN’S REPORT FOR 2023
2023 Has been a challenging year for the hall on a number of fronts. Firstly, we have suffered from resignations from the committee due mainly to personal preferences. The most serious was the loss of our secretary due to personal circumstances. This was compounded by the fact of her replacement decided that due to work commitments she couldn’t spare the time. This means we are now on our third secretary in six months. Additionally, long serving members Kirsty Knight and Fred Clark have both decided to all it a day.
It means we will have to replace those stalwarts and bring some new ideas to the committee.
In terms of village hall activities, it has again been a mixed bay. At the start of the year, we decided to cancel the monthly Friday Club meetings, this again was due to lack of support. Later in the year Mrs Timms, who ran the Village Café/Market felt it was time to stop that as well, again mainly due to dwindling support.
On the positive side, we launched the Silver Spoon Club, organised by Jennifer Trethewey (trustee), which provided soup, bread and puddings, followed by coffee and a quiz for the reasonable price of £8 per head. This has mainly been well supported and have proved a lucrative enterprise as well. Additionally, the hall has plenty of bookings on a weekly basis, with children’s education, Yiga, Tai Chi, Chilton Polden Music Group and the Polden Stitchers, meaning that the hall has more regular bookings than in the recent past.
The hall was built around 1894 an as part of our lease agreement with the Diocese we are bound to keep the hall in good structural condition. Just recently it has been necessary to replaster the south wall of the hall at a cost of £500. Despite this we continue to generate more money that we have spent.
Providing the new committee can continue to run the hall with enthusiasm and imagination, the future looks bright.
