We are an apolitical, non-reli8ious, not-for-profit or8anlsatlon, open to everyone. Despite the favourable socIoveconoml¢ context of Oxford, many challenges remain In laniua8e teaching and education. including the decline of French and modern languages as a cholce for A levels. OUR OBJECTIVES We alm to teach French for all ales and abilltles to the best standards, as well as orianlse cultural events which facilitate access to French lèniuage and intercultural dialo8ue. A8aln In 2024, we were able to offer 9 levels of French for adults, makln8 US the onlv languaie centre in Oxford offerin8 such focused tuition. Adult classes reached near-capacltv le¥e15. maintaining optlmal class sizes (fewer than 8 per class) and demonstrating stron8 demand for French lan8ua8e instruction. A notable Innovatlon was the introduction of a five- week French Ilterature course themed Husbands, Wives, Lovers," which received particularly P051tive feedback from participants. French GCSE revlslon workshops were offered throughout the year. Earlier termly regi5tratlon periods and improved customer journey management resulted In hiiher new student enrolment compared to previous years. Customer satisfactlon remains high, wlth more than 90% of customers confirming they are making progress In their French lan8ua8e learnln8. HUMAN RESOURCES The charlty employs 4 people, 3 of them French teachers. The assoclatlon faced sl8nSllcant human resources challenies In 2024, prlmarily related to iovernment policy chanies affectlni skllled worker visa requlrements. The new mlnlmum salary threshold of £38.700 for skllled worker vlsas created recrultment dlfficulties for the Alliance Franraise d'oxford, particularly affectin8 the ability to hlre native speakers and therefore Its capaclty to answer demand and grow a5 an organisatlon. The minimum salary requlrement for Skill•d Worker vlsas Is too hlih for lan8ua8e teachers who ienerally cannot work more 22-25 hours a week, due to the varlety of classes they teach.. clèsses for children, teenagers and adults, Sn iroup and private tultion settings, whlch requlre lot more preparatlon work than lor a regular school currlculum and often In the evenlngs. Volunteers have helped the association as community coordinators in outreach and social medla, organlslng soclal and educational activities based around the benefits of language learning in the local community, with schools and youth groups. For the Ilrst tlme, the scholars and trustees came together for a "café crolssant des alumni. an opportunity for our scholars to stay in touch and meet other A level scholars, teachers, trustees and heèr all about our A level scholarship inltiative. GOVERNANCE Governance was strenithened wlth the successful re-election of three trustees and the establlshment of a fundraisini sub-commltteo. The association recognised the decade-lon8 ser¥lce ol outioini Treasurer Petor Anderson, acknowledgini hls slgnlficant contributlon to Instltutlonal development. The association achieved GOPR compliance for fundfaisin8 activitles with mlnimal 4djustmen15 required and successfully Implemented amendments to enable student contact for lundrai5in8 opportunities and activities, demonstrating effective re8ulatory adherence. Finances The assoclatlon managed to achieve a surplus of £20 000, in contrast to a deficit of almost £4,1J)O the previou5 year. The AFO saw a 19% increase in sales, totalling £234 666. The AFO Is currently sllghtly ahead of Its tsrget of free reserves of 3 months of expenditure. The treasurer is content that salaries remain in proportion to the turnover, and pay Increases are In line with current employment market conditlons. The AFO wlll likely need to adopt the accruals accountin8 format in accordance with the Charity SORP In 2025.
