Second Hope is one of the only charities exclusively supporting those with Advanced Breast Cancer, and funding research into the condition. The charity is run purely by volunteers which means that all donations received go to fulfil our charitable aims and objectives THE CHARITY HAS FOUR MAIN OBJECTIVES **1.To raise awareness and increase knowledge of advanced breast Cancer** There have been many advances in the treatment of breast cancer, but the fact remains that c30% of breast cancer sufferers will develop metastatic disease, sometimes years after their initial diagnosis. Sometimes people will go for months with unexplained symptoms without realising they may be connected to their previous breast cancer diagnosis.

**Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)**

We aim to raise awareness and increase knowledge of the disease by providing detailed information on advanced breast cancer and the symptoms to look out for. **2.To support and empower those diagnosed and living with advanced breast cancer** A secondary diagnosis is devastating but it is not an immediate death sentence. People can, through drugs and other treatments, achieve Iong perids of remission and have a good quality of life with the disease. We aim to empower those diagnosed with advanced breast cancer by providing up to date information on treatment options, local and national support groups and, on a practical level, the resources and financial benefits that may be available. **3.To campaign on behalf of those affected by advanced breast cancer** Despite a number of promising new treatments for advanced breast cancer, NHS funding is not always available. Although these treatments cannot cure advanced breast cancer, they can provide extra months, sometimes years, of good quality life, and we believe they should be available to all who need them. We aim to ensure all advanced breast cancer patients have access to life extending drugs and treatments.

**4.To fund research into advanced breast cancer** Around 30% of breast cancer patients will develop metastatic disease, yet it is estimated that less that only around 7% of all breast cancer research funding is dedicated to advanced breast cancer. We aim to increase the proportion of funding which currently goes towards advanced breast cancer and will only fund peer-reviewed projects dedicated to researching advanced breast cancer and potential treatments.

## Section D Achievements and performance

Generous supporters have continued to donate and fundraise for Second **Summary of the main** Hope. Once funds have reached a certain level (approximately £200k) a **achievements of the charity** decision has been made to invest this to help towards a vital secondary **during the year** breast cancer research project in 2022-23. Professor Clare Isacke’s research at the Breast Cancer Now Toby Robins Research Centre at the Institute of Cancer Research, London, is seeking to understand the ways in which breast cancer cells grow and spread to other parts of the body. As this research is entirely dedicated to secondary breast cancer, Breast Cancer Now are continuing the aims of Second Hope.
