Borehamwood Baptist Church

Trustees Annual Report 2023-24

Objectives and Activities

The principal purposes of the Church are:-

The advancement of the Christian faith according to the principles of the Baptist denomination. The Church may also advance education and carry out other charitable purposes in the United Kingdom and/or other parts of the world.

The activities of the church outlined in the Constitution include but are not restricted to:

In 2023-24 regular public worship was undertaken each Sunday. There was one person baptised through immersion and Communion of the Lord’s Supper was shared monthly. Mission and evangelism was supported through giving to mission partners in the UK and abroad. Sunday services included the teaching, encouragement, welcome and inclusion of children and young people. Christian disciples were grown and nurtured through Sunday morning teaching, informal bible studies and regular prayer meetings. Pastoral care was given through by the minister and the diaconate. Borehamwood Baptist Church was an active partner in the Elstree and Borehamwood Christian Council (EBCC) and remained in good relationship with our local Baptist Association.

Achievements and Performance

Minister’s Report 2023-2024

2023-2024 marks the first year of my pastoral ministry at Borehamwood Baptist Church. I started work parttime in the role, commuting from South London on 1[st] May and began a time of meeting people and getting to know the church and beginning to discern how God was wanting to grow us and use us as a community in the years to come.

My induction on 13[th] May 2023 was a joyous event with the church full to bursting with church members and attendees, the leaders of Streatham Baptist Church and friends and family. The story of my calling was shared, promises made and we celebrated in sung worship as well as hearing a message from God’s word, delivered by Revd Dotha Blackwood, of Spurgeon’s College on John 6:1-14. Many thanks to all who organised and served to make this a truly memorable event in the life of the church.

At our AGM on 14[th] May, we particularly thanked and acknowledged the help and guidance of Revd Graham Clarke, as moderator during the time of interregnum.

On 24[th] July 2023, I moved to Borehamwood with my family and started working full-time as minister on 1[st] September 2023.

Discipleship

One of my key roles as minister is to encourage church members and those who regularly attend our services in their faith in Jesus. One of the ways I have sought to do this is through structured teaching programmes in our Sunday services. From May to December 2023, we studied the book of Philippians on two Sundays a month. The first Sunday of the month continued to be a Praise and Prayer service led by Pam Tume and Gill Kett which considered a Fruit of the Spirit each month whilst our monthly All Age Celebrations which have been planned and led with Nicky Barrass considered various themes from Philippians. From January to April 2024, in all services, we used material from LICC (London Institute of Contemporary Christianity) to explore the theme of missional discipleship or how we can share our faith in our everyday lives in a series called Frontlines.

January 2023 also saw the start of two bible study groups, which meet fortnightly on a Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning. Both groups have steady attendance and are places of deepening relationship as well as learning from God’s word. Both groups welcome new attendees.

Recognising that we have several young adults in the congregation, I organised a couple of group meals to try and build relationship with them as well as encourage them to build friendships with each other.

Another significant discipleship endeavour was a training course for our Worship Team in the Autumn of 2023. Using materials from Engage Worship, the team explored both the practical and spiritual sides of leading a congregation in worship and all found it helpful and it has impacted our sung worship in our gathered times of worship. Gill Kett, Colleen Sainlo and Karlla da Silva all agreed to become worship leaders and Val Ringwood continued to service as Worship Team Co-ordinator.

Other training this year included Level 2 and Level 3 safeguarding training which took place at the church and was attended by 16 people.

Sonia Steer worked alongside me as Pastoral Deacon in providing pastoral care to the congregation in various forms including phone calls, messages and visits to those who are unwell, bereaved or in pastoral need in some other way.

In September 2023 the church engaged in a Day of Prayer as we began the process of discerning our priorities for the months ahead. Our September Church Meeting sought feedback from members on the Church Profile priorities and the activities which they felt God was calling us to engage in. In October the Leadership Team had an Away Day during which one of the things which were considered was feedback from the September Church Meeting and there was more discussion which led to these priorities being shared at our November Church Meeting.

It was agreed that our priorities for the period January -June 2024 were:

As can be seen above, many of these priorities were completed by the end of March 2024.

Mission

The church affirmed their vision statement: We seek to serve God by sharing the love of God in the community at large, and to nurture and equip one another to do so.

As a church we engaged in the community in a variety of ways to see this vision fulfilled. As well as our ongoing work through Illumin8 and Crackpots, other events were attended and supported within the town as a witness to the gospel.

I attended the Town Civic Festival Service in June 2023 and Nicky Barrass attended the Service of Remembrance at the War Memorial in November 2023. We also hosted Gratitude running a Santa’s Grotto in December 2023 which blessed over 200 children with Christmas gifts and in March 2024 hosted their Easter Party which included an opportunity to tell the Easter Story.

29[th] March saw the annual Walk of Witness organised by EBCC. Following the sad death of Father Dominic, the route was reversed and we hosted the end of the walk with refreshments and worship as well as some of young people doing bible readings on route.

Throughout the year in, all of our activities, many give their time, gifts and energy to serving God in the church. The work of the church is very much a team effort, from the leadership team, to those who move chairs for our hall hires, to those who welcome on Sundays or serve tea and coffee, those who work with our children and young people and many more roles besides. I am grateful to all who serve and together make our work possible.

Borehamwood Baptist Church: Secretary’s report 2023-24

Minister

After a long period of inter-regnum, Rev Rachel Waitt became our minister on 1[st] May 2023. Initially this was half time, changing to full time from 1[st] September 2024.

Leadership Team

On 1[st] April 2023 the leadership team comprised: Nicky Barrass (Secretary), Jyothi Angani (Treasurer), Pam Tume, Sonia Steer, Gill Kett (deacons). Following election at the AGM on 14[th] May 2023, Rose Onyema also joined the leadership team as a deacon.

Sunday Services

In the concluding month of our inter-regnum our services were led by a variety of visiting speakers and our own church members. From 1[st] May 2023, Rev Rachel Waitt led and preached at the majority of Sunday Services with a visiting speaker or church member leading or preaching occasionally.

Membership

On 1[st] April 2023 we had a membership of 44. Through the year we had 3 new members join us and 3 of our members resigned membership following moving away from the area. On 31[st] March 2024 we had a membership of 44.

Our attendance at Sunday services has been gradually creeping up during the year and we estimate that we have 40-50 attending each Sunday.

Baptisms

We have been delighted to celebrate one Baptism this year.

Lighthouse

Lighthouse (our Sunday group for children up to the end of Year 6) has met during the Sunday Service (except for during school holidays and monthly all age celebration services). We have followed the same series as the Sunday services. We averaged 10 children each session.

FIZ

Soon after Rachel started her ministry with us Rachel joined FIZ (our group for young people in school years 7-11) for a trip to Costa. This was an opportunity for the young people to get to know Rachel and for us to explore together where they are in their personal faith and how we can best serve them, and encourage them to engage with Sunday services and develop their own faith.

In September we relaunched FIZ (our Sunday group for young people in school years 7-11). FIZ takes place after the Sunday service approximately twice a month. The young people have lunch together in the church hall and then take part in an activity. During the Autumn and Spring terms we watched episodes of The Chosen (a drama about Jesus’ life) together and discussed. This group is attended by 10-12 young people each session.

Illumin8 Youth group

Illumin8 Youth group takes place on a Friday evening for young people in years 7-11. There are a consistent group of 20 young people who come every fortnight for pizza, games and a time of Bible learning and worship. The leaders are from 2 churches in Borehamwood. Many of the young people attend church either in Borehamwood or further afield, and some do not have a church background. Originally the group was run under the umbrella of Elstree and Borehamwood Christian Council, but in September it became a group run by Borehamwood Baptist Church due to the reduced ability of EBCC to support the group at present.

Wednesday Prayer meeting Val Ringwood

Wednesday Zoom Prayer Meeting has met faithfully each week from 7.30 - 8.30pm over the past year. One person leads the meeting, opening with prayer, then either brings a reading from God's Word or leads a discussion on a topic they seek clarity on. Prayer then follows, topics ranging from requests from members or even folk outside of the Church, people’s concerns for their own health, or that of friends or neighbours, sometimes forwarded to us from the Church Pastoral Team, things going on in our own country or in the world at large, always remembering to give thanks for answered prayers, which are many! Praise God! The evening is all within a happy time of fellowship together. If you are free on a Wednesday, but can't commit to every week, please don't let that stop you from joining with us. You would be very welcome. We are not a select few, we are open to all. If you are interested, then I would be happy to give you details of how to connect.

Monthly half night of prayer (Margaret Adegoke)

Colossians 4:2: “Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful”. Numbers 22:19 “Now spend the night here so that I can find out what else the Lord will tell me”.

The monthly half night prayer started in April 2016 to the Glory of God and since inception it has remained part of Borehamwood Baptist Church many prayer groups.

Philippians 4:6-7 “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”

We used to meet in the church every 2[nd] Friday of the month from 10pm-1am pre COVID-19, but during and after COVID-19 we have been meeting on WhatsApp created by sister Samia Anfu till date.

We have four regular members. We open the session by itemising the prayer points, reading from the Holy bible as the spirit leads. Worship offerings in the form of praise worship followed by words of exaltation by every member of the group with the help of the HOLY SPIRIT.

The night prayer is an avenue of various intercessory prayer as in: evangelism, church growth and leaderships, church issues and problems, families and children, foreign missions, chaotic world events like wars, famine and others, prayer for healing, homes and marriages, youths, students, national needs to UK (secular leadership, economy and many more) and our immediate community. Romans 12:12 “Rejoice in Hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.’

We thank God for all answered prayers Matthew 21:22 “And everything you shall ask in prayer, believing you shall receive.”

We shall be delighted to see more people joining this prayer group (Job 22:28 “You will declare a thinkg, and it will be established for you; so light will shine on your ways”).

The hours spent in God’s presence is always very awesome, refreshing and relaxing because Matthew 18:20 “For where two or three gather in my name there I am with them.

I will round it up with this verse of scripture: John 15:5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remaind in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing” All are welcome. GOD BLESS US ALL.

Crackpots: Jacquie Woods

Crackpots, our meeting for the over 60s, has had a good year with approximately 16 people attending regularly to enjoy time together. We meet monthly and have a wide variety of activities which include visiting speakers or entertainers, craft afternoons, quizzes, board games and more. Not all the people attending come from our church and we welcome outsiders warmly. Our aim is to provide a relaxing afternoon with like minded folk. We have a short “thought for the month” and then refreshments. We meet on the first Tuesday of the month between 2-4pm.

Other Church activities

Activities this year included:

Easter 2023: Rev Graham Clarke led the Maundy Thursday service and a good number of people attended. Our Good Friday service was followed by the EBCC Easter walk of witness which started from our church car park and finished at St Teresa’s. It was well attended and there were plenty of stewards doing a great job. Cofee mornings: We had 4 Coffee Mornings (one in April, one in May and two in August). These went well, with a good number of people attending including quite a few children.

Inducton of Rev Rachel Wait: This took place on 20[th] May. It was a fantastic celebration where we welcomed and prayed for Rachel’s ministry. It was well attended by both our own church family and those from Streatham Baptist Church (where Rachel previously ministered) as well as Rachel’s family and friends. The service was followed by lunch.

Summer actvites: Over the summer period we took a group of young people to Water Wipe out, and we had a rounders and picnic day (which had to relocate from the park to the church hall).

Harvest Festval: Harvest was celebrated in September. This included a donation of food items to the Foodbank.

Joint lunch with Agape Sanctuary: This took place in November and was a great chance to share food with and get to know each other.

Christmas: Gratitude used our hall for a Christmas grotto. This was a great opportunity to strengthen relationships with them and bought a lot of families into our church buildings. Crackpots had a carol service and we had a shared carol service with Pastor Francis. We had a nativity presentation, with a large number of children and young people taking part. The Christmas day service was also well attended. Easter 2024: We had a Maudy Thursday reflective service. The Good Friday service was once again followed by the Good Friday walk which this year ended at Borehamwood Baptist where we served tea and hot crossed buns.

Church meetngs: In this year we have had 6 church meetings, 2 special church meeting and 1 AGM.

Treasurers Year End report (2023-2024)

This financial year saw some of the financial reserves that were built up over the period of interregnum, spent on preparing the manse for occupation by our newly appointed minister. This was anticipated and agree by church members.

Our main sources of income are offerings, hall rental, and gift aid. Our total income of the year 2023/24 was around 14% less than anticipated. Both rental income and giving were less than projected and in addition the gift aid received was less than predicted. One significant positive factor in our rental income was the signing of a new 5-year lease with Little Angels Pre-School which secures a good regular income from the rental of our downstairs halls during term-time until March 2029.

Our most significant expense relates to the cost of employing our minister, Revd. Rachel as Minister of the Church. This includes stipend, expenses and the provision of housing in the form of the manse, which recent in financial years was rented out and was a source of income for the church. Her role is to lead and coordinate the church’s activities including the Sunday Services, to provide pastoral care for the congregation and other people, and to equip and encourage the membership in their life, Christian witness and service.

The Church expressed its role in the wider church by giving to mission work of around £7,000, which is more than the Baptist Union's recommendation. The aim is to aid national and international Christian organizations and societies that have Christian aims and objectives that are compatible with the church's charitable purpose.

The Church is heavily dependent on its membership working as volunteers in all aspects of the church’s activities, many of which run with little or no impact on the church’s expenditure, but nevertheless contribute substantially to the achievement of the church’s objectives.

The use of volunteers and our own buildings mean that many of the church’s activities, including outreach, are achieved at low financial cost. For example, one of our main outreach activities, Illumin8, our youth group run for the community with a gospel message, is funded largely through parental contributions as well as having received income from a youth project that had ended.

Total expenditure was 12% greater than our anticipated budget. This was due to several factors including increases in utilities costs and the financial cost of employing a minister after having been in interregnum. However, the main reason was the repair and refurbishment work that was needed to be done on the manse, which cost considerably more than expected, including a new roof.

For this reason, in this period our expenditure exceeded over income by £62,663.70.

Whilst it was anticipated that spending from our reserves would be necessary this financial year for the reasons outlined above, in coming years it is recognised that income needs to increase so as to meet our ongoing costs as a charity.

Structure, Governance and Management

1.2 GOING CONCERN

At the time of approving the financial statements, the trustees have a reasonable expectation that the charity has adequate resources to continue in operational existence for the foreseeable future. Thus, the trustees continue to adopt the going concern basis of accounting in preparing the financial statements.

Income is recognised when the charity is legally entitled to it after any performance conditions have been met, the amounts can be measured reliably, and it is probable that income will be received.

Cash donations are recognised on receipt. Other donations are recognised once the charity has been notified of the donation, unless performance conditions require deferral of the amount. Income tax recoverable in relation to donations received under Gift Aid or deeds of covenant is recognised at the time of the donation.

Legacies are recognised on receipt or otherwise if the charity has been notified of an impending distribution, the amount is known, and receipt is expected. If the amount is not known, the legacy is treated as a contingent asset

1.5 EXPENDITURE

Expenditure is recognised once there is a legal or constructive obligation to transfer economic benefit to a third party, it is probable that a transfer of economic benefits will be required in settlement, and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably.

Shared costs which contribute to more than one activity and support costs which are not attributable to a single activity are apportioned between those activities on a basis consistent with the use of resources. Central staff costs are allocated on the basis of time spent, and depreciation charges are allocated on the portion of the asset’s use.

2 CRITICAL ACCOUNTING ESTIMATES AND JUDGEMENTS

In the application of the charity’s accounting policies, the trustees are required to make judgements, estimates and assumptions about the carrying amount of assets and liabilities that are not readily apparent from other sources. The estimates and associated assumptions are based on historical experience and other factors that are considered to be relevant. Actual results may differ from these estimates.

The estimates and underlying assumptions are reviewed on an ongoing basis. Revisions to accounting estimates are recognised in the period in which the estimate is revised where the revision affects only that period, or in the period of the revision and future periods where the revision affects both current and future periods.

NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 MARCH 2024

1 ACCOUNTING POLICIES

1.1 ACCOUNTING CONVENTION

The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the charity’s governing document, the Companies Act 2006, FRS 102 “The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland” (“FRS 102”) and the Charities SORP “Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102)” (effective 1 January 2019). The charity is a Public Benefit Entity as defined by FRS 102.

The charity has taken advantage of the provisions in the SORP for charities not to prepare a Statement of Cash Flows.

The financial statements are prepared in sterling, which is the functional currency of the charity. Monetary amounts in these financial statements are rounded to the nearest £.

The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention, [modified to include the revaluation of freehold properties and to include investment properties and certain financial instruments at fair value]. The principal accounting policies adopted are set out below.

1.2 GOING CONCERN

At the time of approving the financial statements, the trustees have a reasonable expectation that the charity has adequate resources to continue in operational existence for the foreseeable future. Thus, the trustees continue to adopt the going concern basis of accounting in preparing the financial statements.

1.3 CHARITABLE FUNDS

Unrestricted funds are available for use at the discretion of the trustees in furtherance of their charitable objectives.

Restricted funds are subject to specific conditions by donors or grantors as to how they may be used. The purposes and uses of the restricted funds are set out in the notes to the financial statements.

Endowment funds are subject to specific conditions by donors that the capital must be maintained by the charity.

BOREHAMWOOD BAPTISE CHURCH: FINANCIAL STAEMENTS FOR YEAR ENDED 31 MARCH 2024

NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS (CONTINUED)

1.4 INCOME

Expenditure is classified by activity. The costs of each activity are made up of the total of direct costs and shared costs, including support costs involved in undertaking each activity. Direct costs attributable to a single activity are allocated directly to that activity. Shared costs which contribute to more than one activity and support costs which are not attributable to a single activity are apportioned between those activities on a basis consistent with the use of resources. Central staff costs are allocated on the basis of time spent, and depreciation charges are allocated on the portion of the asset’s use.

1.6 TANGIBLE FIXED ASSETS

Depreciation is recognised so as to write off the cost or valuation of assets less their residual values over their useful lives on the following bases:

Freehold land and buildings No depreciation provided. Fixtures and fittings 10% on reducing balance basis Office Equipment: Computers 10% on reducing balance basis.

BOREHAMWOOD BAPTISE CHURCH: FINANCIAL STAEMENTS FOR YEAR ENDED 31 MARCH 2024

NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS (CONTINUED)

1.7 CASH AND CASH EQUIVALENTS

Cash and cash equivalents include cash in hand, deposits held at call with banks, other short-term liquid investments with original maturities of three months or less, and bank overdrafts. Bank overdrafts are shown within borrowings in current liabilities.

Derecognition of financial liabilities

Financial liabilities are derecognized when the charity’s contractual obligations expire or are discharged or cancelled.

1.8 TAXATION

The charity is exempt from tax on its charitable activities.
