Governance
The charity is registered as a CIO (Charitable Incorporated Organisation) governed by its board of trustees. Day-to-day operations are handled by the charity’s Operations Manager (Dave Garratt) on behalf of the Trustees. All Trustees and the Operations Manager act on a voluntary basis and are also active crew volunteers.
Activities & Objectives in the Year
At the beginning of 2020 the charity had 30 volunteers (including the Trustees and Operations Manager). During February, two successful recruitment days were held and 15 people were invited to become crew members after undergoing induction training.
Due to the Coronavirus Pandemic, all boat trips for our service users were cancelled. Since our service users and the majority of the crew fell into the ‘vulnerable category’ it was felt unwise to operate our normal service, even outside of the two lockdown periods. A small number of boat trips with less than six people onboard (socially distanced) were held as crew training sessions.
One of the highlights of the year was raising the balance of the c£250K purchase price of our new trip boat ‘Community Spirit’ which was delivered in early August. The downside, of course, is that the boat has so far not been able to earn its keep!
Another highlight, somewhat unexpected given the situation with the Pandemic, was when we had the pleasure ot welcoming HFIH The Princess Floyal to the official naming ol our new boat on 14th October. A wonderful occasion that those present wi1 never forget. As a direct consequence of the Pandemic, we had zero income from private charter trips which are usually run to help balance the books. All fundraising events during the year were also cancelled. Finally, voluntary donations (which normally come from our core activity of providing boat trips for disabled people and care home residents and their carers) were minimal. This left a £20K hole in our finances. Fortunately, our Chairman was able to compensate for this through some grant funding, enabling us to end the year in a fairly healthy position. Further details are provided in the Treasurer's Report & Accounts. The planned extension of our charitable public benefit - more trips for care homes and disabled people, plus the launch of a service for primary schoolchildren clearly was not achieved due to the pandemic. The revised objective for the year was to ensure our ongoing financial viability and readiness to resume delivery ol our service as soon as conditions allow. The above figures refTect the adverse effect of the National Pandemic of 2020 with so very limited boaling activity able to take place as compared with previous seasons.
