ntro It is a great pleasu￿ to reflect on the last year. A steady stream of new challenges added by COVID compounded the p￿￿qUre to respond to the cortstantly changir)g and unpredictable de- mand for emergency food. Staff, volunteers, partners, and our many supporters who give food donations or financial help have sustained operalions that have not stopped and hit new recoKIs. Starting the year in full lockdown. with a delivery seNice enabled by Taunton and W&st Somerset Council, we eventually evolved a collection system. but. &8 of COU￿ with everyone else, had to contend with a changing backdrop of ￿gulatIon and advice. At the saffle time. some Communities launched local food distribLrtions, which in hindsight took sotne of the pre&8ure off us. although it added to the difficulty in forecasting needs. Ultimately though, we distributed an unprecedented 94 tonnes of food. 45% more than the previous year. Throughout the period we continued to receive a good fft)w on donations. Financial donatiorks in- creased, partly through people and otyJanisations giving money in lieu of food. And at the end of the year we found ourselves aÈTanging to receive a van. complete wtth Taunton Foodbank livery, donated by a lo(xl (zr deder. Until this year, the Foodbank supported distributions in Langport. but it became apparent to us and the local team that Langport would be better served by a locally led administration. for exam- ple better placed to work with their local district council. And so we have fomially stopped distri- butions through Langport, arKI wish them well in future. Having started mentioning the remarkable support we have, I'd like to finish by thanking all those who make our work possible each day, particularty through this extraordinary year. In this wider context. the man activities have included: promotion of the needs of the Foodbank for donations of food receipt and organisation of donations in the warehouse distribution of food from the Taunton warBhouse and distribution centres at Wellington. Langport and Wiveliscombe, to individuals ￿feThed to the Foodbank by recognised agen- cies: operations through the Langport ceased mid-year by mLrtuai agreement provision of food to families referred by school support w0￿erE during holiday periods occasional support to other charrtable oryanisations, for example Open Door (RCN 11220401.. an annual payment is made to the Trussell Trust {RCN 11105221 for ongoing support as a member of its networf( of Foodbanks additional support. in particular our norn￿ signposting to other social support agencies. was severely limited by the COVID restiictions on dient contact. Publi The Trustees met 6 times and werE satisfied that all activities remained compliant with the public benefit requirements that we consder to be self-evidence in the chartty's objectives (above). Donations have been received to satisfy dl refetrals, again with a cornsiderable increase in activity over the previous year. Activty was affected by a range of factors, and wtth the generosity of our supporters we were able to m￿rrtain a cushion against new shocks with a substantia increase in our year end bJance of stock {23te compared wtth 11te in 20201 and cash (see comment below). DistribLrtions in more detail- Food distributed Food parcels (tonnes) distributed 93.9 2974 Individuals directly benefitting 8243 2020-21 (this .year) 2019-20 63.6 2636 6355 Financial rev ew At the end of the year. the cash bdance was £151.004 approximately £1 Ook above the opening balance. The Trustees attribLrte this to the remarkable compassion among supporters through the period of crisis, together wtth a shift in some areas from giving food to giving money on account of lockdown and associated restrictions. A new requirement emerged for a van to facilitate distri- bution, as the restrictiorks on clients vistting the warehouse could not be forecast wtth any confi- dence. In the end. money that had been husbanded towa￿lS a purchase or lease was not required because we received the donation of a van that met our needs very well.

Also. during the year there was much discussion among the Trustees and consultation with the Trussell Tnjst on whether, in view of the potential volatilty created by COVID, we should adjust upwards our reserves policy. Within this discussion we noted that a new factor was the emer- gence of a number of new groups ￿sF)0ndin9 to very local needs wth food distributions. How long these would continue to operate was impossible to pr&lict. an(5 therefore we have had to take the view that there has been an underlying need that exceeds our distribution figures, and we need to be prudent to provide for this rf the o)ndttions created by COVID continue. At the end of the year the existing £10.0(K) lower limit had not been fomially revised, bui we were confident that the balance provided a very good measure ol security, particularfy in the light of the continuing levels of generosity among our support base.
