Summary of the objects of the charity set out in its governing document

The Charity provides disabled people with the opportunity to ride to benefit their health and wellbeing.

The Charity provides equestrian opportunities specifically for children and adults with physical, sensory and learning disabilities in order for them to gain therapeutic benefit and have the chance to achieve.

These include riding therapy and training, competitions, training on horse care and stable management, and educational activities; and specific projects aimed at providing therapy including Hippotherapy.

Belvoir Vale RDA treats each rider as an individual, tailoring its support to their specific requirements. The Charity provides specialist tuition by RDA qualified coaches and supported by trained volunteers with-out whom most of the people that the group works with would not be able to access the riding activities.

The Belvoir Vale RDA group is entirely run by volunteers including the coaches, trustees, pony leaders and side walkers. For the period of this report there were 22 individuals drawn from a range of backgrounds and ages. All are bound by their desire to help and support the disabled participants.

Of these volunteers 10 were under 25 years of age and we are delighted that we have been able to welcome back students wishing to complete their volunteering service for their Duke of Edinburgh Awards.

Section D Achievements and performance

Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year

The total number of sessions delivered by Belvoir Vale RDA this year was 860 so we are now back to the activity levels before the COVID pandemic.

This year has been a busy and exciting time for the Group and I’m delighted to report that all the riders who had previously ridden with us and who wished to ride again have returned.

However, The Trustees were conscious that the waiting list for people wanting to join Belvoir Vale RDA was growing so more sessions were opened on weekdays. By the end of the year the Group was regularly running 15 different sessions per week. The weekend lessons were a mix of small group sessions, generally with two or three participants or individual sessions for those riders requiring 2 side-walkers. The weekday sessions were all for individuals.

To support these sessions our amazing Team of regular volunteers steadily grew in number to 22 which includes 10 that are under 25. Belvoir Vale RDA is totally dependent on these selfless individuals who gave up their time so generously.

Our wonderful team of ponies have continued to work their magic and in August we took two of them with 5 riders to join in a Fun Day at Kesteven Rideability near Grantham. This was our first trip away from home since before the pandemic and it was great to be back enjoying ponies with old friends.

The Group were delighted to welcome a new pony recruit to the Team. His purchase was the result of the group’s successful bid for funds from a local Trust- The Puddle Lane Trust, The only stipulation was that the pony must be called Puddle. Oscar Puddle joined us in November and quickly became a firm yard favourite.

Our super new Arena Mirrors were installed, paid for by volunteer Natalie’s 100k Continuous Trek and have become a very useful tool in helping our riders check their position in the saddle or as a communication aid for our Therapy riders.

Our talented volunteer and qualified physiotherapist, Jennie, sailed through her Group Coach Assessment and has also enrolled on a Hippotherapy Course. This is a very exciting development for Jennie and the Belvoir Vale RDA as it will allow her to work with more severely disabled participants, some of whom would normally be excluded from regular RDA sessions.

This year, for the first time since 2019, the National Championships were to return to Hartpury, Gloucestershire. Belvoir Vale was represented by 12 riders and 4 ponies at the Regionals. All riders rode extremely well with 8 qualifying for the Championships. Unfortunately, due to the extreme heat the Sunday classes had to be cancelled which meant that for 4 of our riders they would no-longer be able to compete This was devastating but horse and participant welfare had to be the main priority.

Section D Achievements and performance

For our Saturday competitors there was rosettes all round with Tom on Alfie winning the Overall Championship for the Countryside Challenge. That is 3 times in row that the Group have won this trophy which is remarkable.

It has been a full and varied year and wouldn’t have been possible without the continued support of our participants and their families and our regular donors. With the continuing presence of COVID we didn’t actively run any fundraising events so the money we received form the Radcliffe-on-Trent Co-op Community Fund helped fill the gap in our finances.

An exciting year was capped off with the Granting of Planning Approval for the new RDA Centre in August- it had taken a whole year for the Council to finally make a decision and it marks the start of a very important period for Belvoir Vale RDA’s future.

The builders arrived on site at the beginning of May and the construction is going well. It is envisaged that by the autumn of 2023 the group will be operating from one of the most advanced disabled friendly facilities in the county, providing opportunities for a greater number of participants of all disabilities.

Brief statement of the charity’s policy on reserves

The Trustees are satisfied that the Charity’s cash fund are sufficient for the Group to continue to operate. Our policy of participants paying ‘up-front’ has allowed us to forward plan more effectively and has reduced the number of ‘wasted’ sessions due to unexplained absences by riders. The reserves we hold are needed to support ponies even when we are unable to run sessions, such as during the pandemic lockdowns and to meet unexpected costs such as veterinary bills.

In addition, the Co-op store in Radcliffe-on-Trent have continued to support us through their Local Community Fund. This money has been used to support our pony Fin.

In August 2021 a planning application to build a purpose-built RDA Centre and associated welfare facilities was approved on land owned by the group’s chairman and her family. When built, this new facility will be offered to the group for their use and offers a great opportunity for the group to extend their activities to more riders and volunteers as well as for other disabled groups in the local community.
