Objectives and Activities
To give long term support to build local organisations and communities in the Kilimanjaro region of Tanzania so they can address social, economic and environmental issues.
Impact of COVID
Due to COVID-19 all operations by our local partner KEDA ceased to occur in the last quarter of this report period
Bee-keeping Project (Onoing)
What:
The project aims to provide HIV/AIDS afflicted households a less labour-intensive income generation activity through the production and sale of honey
Why:
Bee keeping is less labour intensive that other activities such as farming and is therefore an ideal for the elderly and those unable to engage in physical labour.
How
A community beekeeping group will be established
Sustainability:
To ensure the sustainability of the programme in return for receiving the beehives each group will be expected to provide 25% of their honey produce to KEDA which will be sold and the
funds reinvested back into the programme for expansion.
Previous Activities
-
Group established
-
Training provided
-
Bee hives procured and provided to group
-
16 Bee hives were relocated to riverside location as bees were not forming colonies in their previous locations
2018/19 Updates
The remaining bee hives were relocated to the riverside and the 6 beehives that were previously colonised have continued to produce honey.
Due to the low number of hives that have been colonised KEDA has forgone on requesting 25% of he honey produce to be provided
Commercial Tee Project (Onoing)
What:
The commercial tree nursery aims to provide KEDA with a demonstration plot to the local community on the benefits of fruit trees as a source of income and provide a sustainable source of income for KEDA through the commercial sale of tree saplings
Why:
Environmental degradation is a challenge in the region and soil erosion negatively impacts farmland’s productivity. To combat this, the commercial tree nursery will sell fruit tree saplings so that households can plant these and use the fruit produced as a source of income as well as maintain soil integrity. Furthermore, the commercial tree nursery will provide a source of renewable income for our local partner KEDA through the sale of fruit tree saplings as well as other tree sapling types.
How:
The programme will be delivered through a partnership agreement with a local community member whereby Katapult in partnership with KEDA will provide the start-up costs and provide technical supervision with the partner
providing land for the commercial tree nursery and undertaking day-to-day management of production.
Previous Activities
-
Local community m,ember was identified to act as a local partner
-
Formal agreement was signed in early 2017
-
Set-up costs and technical assistance provided by KEDA
-
Local Partner ha to relocate and therefore another partner needed to be identified
2018/19 Updates
During the year the tree nursery which was located in Ghona village was shifted to Chekereni after a second local partner was identified.
The new location has proved to be more successful as water bill charges are lower and more local residents have shown interest in purchasing tree seedlings. Roughly TSh 60,000 worth of seedlings have been sold which has been reinvested through buying papaya seeds and paying of casual labour
