ANNUAL REPORT OF "SURVIVING WINTER IN HADLEIGH"

FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 JULY 2022

REGISTERED WITH THE CHARITY COMMISSION UNDER NUMBER 1162885

We are a small local charity consisting of five unpaid trustees:

Mr. N. Webber (Chairman) of 15 Castle Road, Hadleigh, Suffolk IP7 6JH

Mr. J.P. Gower (Treasurer) of 1 Wentworth Close, Hadleigh, Suffolk IP7 5SA

Ms. Karen Gower (Secretary) of 21 Cottesford Close, Hadleigh, Suffolk IP7 5JA *

Ms. Nicola Gower of White House Barn, Moats Tye, Combs, Stowmarket, Suffolk IP14 2EY *

Mr. Ben Hall of 24 Mary Clarke Close, Hadleigh, Suffolk IP7 6FD*

The declared aim of the charity continues to be, “The relief of financial hardship, particularly fuel poverty, of people living in and around Hadleigh, Suffolk” by providing funds to enable people to keep warm and otherwise survive winter in Hadleigh.

To date the charity has:

a) A lady was frightened to switch on her electric fire for fear she had not set enough aside to meet the bill.

b) A lady, caring for her terminally ill son, feared she could not afford the bill for oil for the forthcoming winter.

c) The husband of an elderly couple had been in hospital for major surgery and was recovering at home. His wife was worried that she would not be able to keep the house warm enough during his convalescence.

During the year the founder and former chairman of the charity died. His family set up a fundraising page with a target of £3,000 which was achieved.

We continue to keep the charity in the minds of the local people by occasional submission of an article in the Hadleigh Community News and continue to be associated with the charity “Hadleigh Community Support” which is an umbrella organization designed to coordinate the activities of the various charities in the town. We have had several referrals from Hadleigh Community Support and were able to help on every occasion.

A succession of comparatively mild winters has resulted, fortunately, in fewer people being cold in their own homes and therefore fewer cases in need of our assistance, however, following the unprecedented rises in energy prices we anticipate greater demand on our resources in this forthcoming winter.

An Income and Expenditure Account is maintained on a monthly basis or more frequently if the volume of transactions warrants it. The bank accounts are monitored daily.

The requirement to hold an amount of cash is the result of having given a cheque to one needy case which when deposited was used by the bank to partially defray an excessive overdraft leaving the client unable to access the funds we had donated.

Local people are more comfortable knowing that there is a local charity able to assist anybody who has need of assistance to survive winter in Hadleigh and the surrounding villages.

J. Peter Gower, (Treasurer) — Surviving Winter in Hadleigh.
