## ANNUAL REPORT OF "SURVIVING WINTER IN HADLEIGH"

## FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 JULY 2021

## REGISTERED WITH THE CHARITY COMMISSION UNDER NUMBER 1162885

We are a small local charity consisting of five unpaid trustees:

Mr. N. Webber (Chairman) of 15 Castle Road, Hadleigh, Suffolk IP7 6JH

Mr. J.P. Gower (Treasurer) of 1 Wentworth Close, Hadleigh, Suffolk IP7 5SA

Ms. Karen Gower (Secretary) of 21 Cottesford Close, Hadleigh, Suffolk IP7 5JA *

Ms. Nicola Gower of White House Barn, Moats Tye, Combs, Stowmarket, Suffolk IP14 2EY *

Mr. Ben Hall of 24 Mary Clarke Close, Hadleigh, Suffolk IP7 6FD*

During the year Mr. Frederick Breyer stood down as Chairman and Trustee because of poor health. Three additional trustees * were appointed to ensure the succession of the charity.

The declared aim of the charity continues to be, “The relief of financial hardship, particularly fuel poverty of people living in and around Hadleigh, Suffolk, by providing funds to enable people to keep warm over winter.

To date the charity has:

- 1) Financially assisted people, particularly the elderly, unable to afford their heating bills a) A lady was frightened to switch on her electric fire for fear she had not set enough aside to meet the bill.

   - b) A lady, caring for her terminally ill son, feared she could not afford the bill for oil for the forthcoming winter.

   - c) An elderly couple; the husband had been in hospital for major surgery, was recovering at home but his wife was worried that she would not be able to keep the house warm enough during his convalescence. We donated £200 towards their electricity.

- 2) Purchased and distributed blankets, clothing, thermal underwear and socks and replaced an electric blanket heavily relied on by an old lady.

- 3) Purchased and distributed coal some of which was kindly donated by somebody converting from solid fuel to gas central heating.

- 4) Purchased warm clothing to enable a disabled young lady pursue her passion for horse riding over the winter months.

- 5) Paid for the servicing of a mobility scooter which is the only means an infirm couple, living on the fringe of Hadleigh, have of getting into the town.

- 6) Purchased and distributed “panic alarms” particularly for the elderly to enable them to bring attention and raise help in the event of a fall or in times of stress.

Fund-raising continues on a slow but steady basis. We work to keep the charity in the minds of the local people by occasional submission of an article in the Hadleigh Community News. During the year we associated the charity with “Hadleigh Community Support” which is an umbrella organization designed to coordinate the activities of the various charities in the town. We had two referrals from Hadleigh Community Support with which we were able to help.

A succession of comparatively mild winters has resulted, fortunately, in fewer people being cold in their own homes and therefore fewer cases in need of our assistance. We must, however, be ready for a winter which may require our full resources and therefore keep funds in reserve for such an eventuality.

An Income and Expenditure Account is maintained on a monthly basis or more frequently if the volume of transactions warrants it.

Local people are more comfortable knowing that there is a charity able to assist anybody who has need of assistance to survive winter in Hadleigh and the surrounding villages.

- J. Peter Gower, (Treasurer) — Surviving Winter in Hadleigh.
