## **Annual Report for 2022**

**In accordance with our Constitution and our obligations as a CIO, Heroica Theatre Company’s Trustees met at four Board meetings and an AGM across 2022, and accurate Minutes were kept. Accounts and reports will be submitted to The Charity Commission in October 2023.**

Notwithstanding a slow build-back following the adjustments and constraints demanded by the 2020-21 Covid pandemic, Heroica Theatre Company was pleased to have completed an active and productive year in 2022.

## _**1. Maverick Monologues**_

In line with our Company Aims (1. to create historical, social and cultural learning opportunities through interactive and collaborative theatre experience; 2. to raise the profile and honour the work of women across the centuries; 3. to pursue fundraising initiatives in order for the Company to maintain itself as a charity organization dedicated to public benefit), we were able to continue our _Maverick Monologues_ series into 2022 with one final event: our twelfth in our series of shared evenings, and our eighth Zoom evening of the series.

The event mustered seven different speakers from both the UK and abroad and 33 attendees, and donations were generous.

Following this event, Heroica canvassed the opinion of all previous attendees and speakers from our _Maverick Monologues_ database on the advisability of continuing the online ‘virtual’ format. It was concluded, upon evaluation of the responses, that people’s interest in indoor Zoom events was waning given the onset of longer daylight hours and the overall relaxing of Covid restrictions. It was agreed that we discontinue the event for the time being.

_Maverick Monologues_ had been a most successful and timely event and we were proud of its work in bringing people together to talk across the world, to continue to honour extraordinary women of influence and to assist in the raising of funds for future projects.

Following the last event of the series – and with principle aim of easier access to our _Maverick Monologues_ presentations for the visually impaired - we asked all previous contributors to send us mp3 recorded versions of their presentations which we then uploaded to the _Maverick Monologues_ page of our website, attaching the files to the appropriate portrait of the woman subject already featured in our Gallery. This required much communication with presenters from across the series and the dedication of many hours of technical work in order to make the page easy and efficient to navigate. The outcome is an almost complete set of spoken and textual presentations, plus a complete visual Gallery.

## **2.** _**Margaret Morris: Inspirations**_

In light of a negative response, in March 2022, to an ‘expression of interest’ to ACE in regard to funding a production tour of _Margaret Morris: Inspirations,_ we decided to follow through with the

project but instead in a smaller, self-funded format: creating a one-off event for local people on 28th October 2022 at the Hebden Bridge Town Hall.

With timely preparation in advance, the event went ahead as planned with good promotional coverage in advance. Admission was £10 to include wine. The total cost was £1182.17; income was £741.45. Donations came from some individuals plus _Maverick Monologues_ events.

The evening’s offerings comprised: a seated reading of the full script of _Margaret Morris: Inspirations_ by Anna Carlisle, with four actors (Alexandra Mathie, Alison Skilbeck, Tim Hardy and Lois Mackie) plus:

- a photographic exhibition of the life, works and loves of Margaret Morris

- Pathe News footage of Margaret Morris in action in the 1930s

- an overhead image slideshow during the reading

- accompanying piano music

- a follow-up Q&A chaired by Amanda Dalton, chair of Heroica.

There were a few local events in calendar competition on that date which reduced our anticipated attendance figures. Forty-eight people attended, plus three volunteers and three Heroica trustees.

Several audience members travelled long distances to attend: they included a dance historian and an arts practitioner from Edinburgh, and three Margaret Morris practitioners from the south of England.

The Q&A evolved into a lively discussion that centred on Margaret’s personality and the use of her famous movement techniques. The MMM teachers and dance historian made invaluable contributions to the discussion.

The event was filmed and sound-recorded by Geoff Tansey for our archives and website. In the December edition of the magazine of ‘Margaret Morris Movement International’, two of the MMM guests at the evening, Gail Borrows and Barbara West, both wrote glowing reports on the event.

The main outcome of the event was an agreement amongst the Trustees that the model of a oneevening, self-funded event was potentially very successful and merited further exploration for future projects. We have plans for a 2024 production on the life of artist Pat Douthwaite and our forward work continues towards this end.

## **In conclusion:**

All of the work undertaken by Heroica Theatre Company in 2022 was directed towards the achieving of our key Company objectives. All fund-raising activity was in line with our policy objectives.
