Section C Objectives and activities

For the public benefit, to bring sustainable improved drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene in particular but not exclusively in Sub-Saharan West Africa to those who have access to only unimproved facilities, in particular but not exclusively by providing access to improved drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene through appropriate technologies and education for the advancement of health or the saving of lives in accordance with Christian principles.

Definitions

For the purpose of this clause ‘Unimproved sanitation’ means open defecation (when human faeces are disposed of in fields, forests, bushes, open bodies of water, beaches or other open spaces or disposed of with solid waste); facilities that do not ensure hygienic separation of human excreta from human contact (unimproved facilities include pit latrines without a slab or platform, hanging latrines and bucket latrines); shared sanitation facilities (sanitation facilities of an otherwise acceptable type shared between two or more households. Only facilities that are not shared or not public are considered improved).

For the purpose of this clause ‘Improved Drinking Water’ means public taps or standpipes; tube wells or boreholes; protected dug wells; protected springs; rainwater collection; piped household water connection located inside the user’s dwelling, plot or yard.

For the purpose of this clause ‘Appropriate Technology (AT)’ means technology that is designed to be "appropriate" to the context of its use. Typical AT’s may be more labour intensive but require fewer resources, and use low cost and readily available materials wherever possible.

Website / Social media

We have now switched to the new website. The transition was seamless, and we have received lots of positive feedback. We are still struggling to grow our social media, but we do have a presence on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube.

SWIDN (South West International Development Network)

The accelerator scheme has now come to an end, but we remain a member of SWIDN.

Team visits

Mark travelled to Ziguinchor from the 28[th] of April to the 12[th] of May. As well as spending time encouraging the team, we were able to continue testing the water quality of our boreholes. Results are very good!

Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)

Mark spent the 7[th] to the 24[th] of November in Ziguinchor. He was able to take a water level dip meter with him. The dip meter is used to measure the depth of the water table and should prove useful for monitoring how the depth of the water table varies around the area and how it fluctuates throughout the year. More water quality tests were carried out alongside the depth measurements.

Mark and Rachel (accompanied by Dave Lambert) travelled to Senegal from the 20[th] to the 30[th] of March. The trip served two purposes. The first was so that Rachel could visit Ziguinchor to meet the installation team and see the work that we do first hand. Rachel was able to meet all of the team (except Souleymane who was in Gambia) and be present for the installation of a borehole from start to finish. The second purpose of the trip was to help organise the filming of our promotional film. We met with Harrison Thane who spent two and a half days with us filming the installation team and some of our beneficiaries. We are particularly grateful to Help Film (RCN 1189012, https://helpfilm.org/) who funded this film project and found the filmmaker on our behalf.

Ziguinchor Team/Boreholes

The team, led by Parfait, are still going strong. As part of Project 100 we have now been able to purchase an off-road motorbike. This makes Parfaits job visiting beneficiaries and maintenance call-outs much easier and he is very happy.

In September we launched Project 100 aiming to install 100 new boreholes in a period of 12 months. By the end of March we had completed 67 of the 100 boreholes providing an estimated 6,700 people with access to safely managed water. This also brought the total number of FoL boreholes to 216 which equates to over 20,000 people being supplied with water! Funding for this project proves to be challenging still. At the end of March we had only raised £11,940 of the budgeted £35,000.

The Ziguinchor team have the demonstrated the capacity to install 10-15 new boreholes per month. Our challenge is to find the level of funding to match their capability (£1,800 - £2,700 per month).

If more funding can be found, we could easily expand the work from one team to two teams with Parfait taking on more of a manager role and doing less hands-on work.

We want to recognise the work of Susie Spencer. She continues to enthusiastically fundraise and spread the word about FoL on our behalf in some very creative ways. We also want to thank Alice Hall for serving as the Chair of Trustees until stepping down in November 2022.
