# **Sheffield Street Pastor Coordinator Annual Report 2023 Sheffield Street Pastors: c/o Rock Christian Centre,**

# **- 177 195 Spital Hill S4 7LF - Charity number 1162786**

2023 has been a steady year. We have had teams out throughout the year and have only had to cancel 1 or 2 throughout the whole year (This was due to illness.)

However, we have had a few people decide to hang up their uniform.

We have lost a few people from patrolling –.

Kinder and Gina had a 3 month break.

We are very sad to see John Wilkins step down – been a team leader and a great link as he is a police chaplain with police and also accessing significant grant money from the Methodists.

Also, a real shame to see Steve and Joy Winks leave the team They have been with us from the beginning. Involved in the initial talks when we set up the Burngreave team and then joined the first City centre team in 2010. Joy was telling me how God really led her to Street Pastors through some amazing situations. Long service award to them

We now have a total of 23 (plus 3 sleeping) Street Pastors from 16 different churches

This rearrangement of people has meant that we are down to 3 out of 4 Friday patrols. A big thanks to all of you for keeping going and supporting us in various ways.

We have had Nick, Vinnie, Sarah join us this year. Great to have some possible new people here tonight.

The city centre has seen variations in footfall from being very busy in the summer/autumn as students came back.

With the ‘cost of living’ etc Christmas was fairly quiet and January even more so. Although it does mean we have more time to chat to people.

## Safe Square.

For the month of December, a pilot scheme was set up to run a Safe Square in Leopold Square. I have been to so many meetings discussing this for the last 12 years. I was involved in the latter stages of this bringing some useful suggestions. This initiative brought together council, police, NHS and venues. It also has a facility to collect people/take people home.

## It reported back

The scheme has already prevented over 40 cases going to A&E, freeing up Ambulance crews - which are in short supply - to instead focus their resource on more serious issues across the city.

- By acting as a drop off point for the incredible Sheffield Street Pastors and South Yorkshire Police, it's allowing trained professionals to focus on keeping the City Centre safe and allowing our trained staff to safeguard and look after people.

- Having the incredible Trinity Medical Services Ltd & IPM Group supporting the scheme allows the Safe Square to provide a rapid response to serious incidents within the city centre.

The pilot scheme has been extended for Jan/Feb.

## Trustees/Committee

Niall has been Chair of our committee for a number of years and has decided to have a break and step down although he will still be a team leader and very much part of the team each month. Thank you Niall, for your input over the years.

After a number of years Lesley West stepped down from being treasurer. A big thank you to her. At a talk at Fulwood Church I appealed for a new treasurer and we are very pleased that David’s wife volunteered him to be our treasurer!! Thank you Heather and David!

Andrea Hanson joined the Management Committee a year ago and Becky Marshall has just joined us and agreed to take over being the Chair.

## Coordinator.

I have done talks at Fulwood and FourSquare Gospel church this year. Others have done talks – Trev. However, it has been quite hard to be able to get in to churches to do talks.

I have continued to attend the Licencee’s Unite meetings each month. I am regularly asked what I think at these and have many opportunities through these meetings.

I have started to attend the NTE Partnership Meetings as well.

Applying for grants is a big part of my work and we managed to cover my salary last year with a grant from the PCC. David and I attended a zoom this week in order to receive the rest of the grant. This leads to various other meetings as an agreement of our grant.

We may need to apply for a few more grants later this year.

I have done the Charity Return for this year.

I was asked to be on the radio just before Christmas talking about spiking.

I had to quickly read up the new gov legislation. Then she asked why we do it!! Great opportunity.

All of these are opportunities to put a Christian perspective on things.

We have linked and taken out as observers, people from 1625. This is an outreach team to people aged – 16-25.

Ascension Trust is now back to doing ID cards so Becky may well be looking to take your photo this evening.

For those who need to update their DBS Dave Clarke is now sorting this out. Please help him as much as you can as it is a time-consuming job.

We have had many messages back through Facebook and I do try and pass messages on to the appropriate teams.

WhatsApp continues to work really well both for prayer and for teams.

If there are any supporters who would like to be added to the Prayer App let me know and I can add you. Also please do try and have a few people who support you in the work that you can ask to pray for you on the nights that you are out.

Please let me know if things are low at base so I can restock. (preferably so there is time for me to do it!)

Uniforms – Andrea and I spent an afternoon sorting out preloved uniform. If you need to change or add anything please have a look afterwards. But don’t mess up the boxes.

Please try and fill in the forms each week. You can do it on your phone. It makes a difference to our stats. If you are not sure – see Niall.

– Recruitment Big problem.

We need to find ways to reach different churches. Any ideas welcome.

Finally, a big Thank You to each and every one of you. It is a privilege to be part of a fantastic team. I can send observers out with any team as I know you are all great.
