## Race Against Blood Cancer Annual Report for Year Ended 31 March 2025

The Trustees of Race Against Blood Cancer are pleased to present our Annual Report which covers the fiscal year 1st April 2024 to 31st March 2025.

_In the UK blood cancer patients from a Global Majority background have a significantly higher post-diagnosis mortality rate when compared to White Northern European patients. A White Northern European patient has a 70% or more chance of finding a match compared to a 20% or less chance for a Global Majority patient._

Race against Blood Cancer was founded in 2015 by a group of friends who received the devastating news of a close friend s blood cancer diagnosis. A lifesaving match depends on finding a stem cell or bone marrow donor with a similar ethnicity as the patient and it was even more devastating to realise that the chance of finding a match was significantly lower because of a mixed ethnic background. This group of friends were inspired to join the fight for health equality and give every blood cancer patient the best possible chance of surviving blood cancer regardless of background.

At RABC our vision is that one day, all blood cancer patients will have the equal opportunity of a quality stem cell match.

Our mission is to save more lives by addressing the stark inequality of finding a stem cell match for Global Majority blood cancer patients by recruiting more people from these backgrounds onto the UK s register of stem cell and bone marrow donors.

To achieve our mission we deliver one of the only UK programmes aiming to engage the public in a face-to-face capacity and recruit new people from Global Majority backgrounds onto the donor register. We focus our efforts on partnering with organisations and in areas which have high levels of our target population, building trust and relationships with organisations and communities to recruit as many Global Majority donors as possible each year.

Our 'Save a Life Programme (SLP) has developed over 9-years and consists of Donor Drive events, where we directly sign people up to the stem cell and bone marrow donor register. We ve recently added separate Education Talks, which raise awareness of the issue, where each talk is followed by a Donor Drive event. This approach slows our recruitment in real terms but invests in longer-term attitude change in people we hope will become lifelong advocates. Our programme is delivered across the Midlands with intermittent activity in London, and we have a national reach because the donor registry is accessed across the UK.

For countless people living with blood cancer and other blood disorders, the search for a matching stem cell donor is a race against time. Your willingness to donate could offer them the priceless gift of a second chance at life.

## Chair of Trustees Statement for period April 2024 to March 2025

## Introduction

As we approach our 10-year anniversary, its critical that we align on the strategic delivery plan and expectations to safeguard the future of the charity. Since inception, we have signed up over 11,000 donors and more than 20 potential lifesaving donor matches, making us one of the biggest UK partners to DKMS and, more recently, Anthony Nolan.

Despite our achievements, we ve found it challenging to achieve financial stability and face to face recruitment events post-COVID, though a new strategic plan is currently being prepared to address both these issues going forward. Our recruitment of a specialist fundraising trustee in the previous period has paid dividends and we are moving in a positive direction year-on-year with our fundraising.

## Achievements and Challenges

During the period from April 2024 to March 2025, we hosted 69 events (donor drives and YEP presentations), signing up over 787 potential lifesavers. We kicked off a multi-year partnership with The Anthony Nolan charity aimed at funding our Youth Education Programme (YEP). We contributed creation of the first Global Majority recruitment targets and we also began rebuilding our website, funded by The National Lottery.

However, we faced challenges such as difficulty in generating funds, struggles in recruiting volunteers and a decrease in the average number of sign-ups per donor drive as we shifted to more closed environments like schools and colleges as part of the YEP. These challenges only strengthen our resolve to set and achieve more ambitious Global Majority recruitment targets, delivering high quality donors who go on to donate when matched.

## Impact Stories

The APPG report launch allowed us to build closer relationships with key stakeholders across the Department for Health, NHS Blood & Transplant, and other smaller charities. Our collaboration with Anthony Nolan significantly improved donor recruitment from two of our target groups from males and those aged under 30 both of whom offer better outcomes for blood cancer patients with less risk of complications.

## Partner Feedback

Holly Gooch, Partnerships Manager at Anthony Nolan, shared her positive feedback:

been working in Partnership since 2019 and really stepped up in activity from 2021 when RABC ran a series of very successful donor recruitment events with the National Citizen Service. At the end of 2023, we updated our recruitment agreement and RABC proposed an ambitious recruitment strategy and KPIs, which I am delighted to say they have surpassed.

Page 2 Race Against Blood Cancer is a registered charity, number 1162696 Registered office address: 71-75 Shelton Street, London, WC2H 9JQ

Race Against Blood Cancer set out to recruit 300 people to the register across the first 3 months of this year, a target which is approximately 3 times the number of people they recruited in the entirety of last year. In this partnership, we want to recruit quality donors who we know will provide the best possible outcomes for patients. Part of this is recruiting young donors, between the ages of 16-23. 84% of R -23 (compared to Anthony Nolan overall which is 80%). The other key area of focus is recruiting more donors from minority ethnic backgrounds as we are committed, at RABC and AN, to ensuring that every patient has access to a stem cell transplant. 38% of the people RABC recruited are from minority ethnic backgrounds, compared to 23% on average across Anthony Nolan. Not only are RABC committed to recruiting donors, but they have also cruiting quality donors who will go on to save the lives of patients now and in the future.

It has been so impressive to see RABC pivot their approach to recruitment this year to engage more young people - forging new connections, trialling new approaches and successfully shifting their focus to a younger, more targeted audience. For the year ahead, RABC are looking to develop an education programme to deliver to local schools and colleges so they can reach even more young people where ts, bust myths and help each individual to make a safe, informed decision about donation.

## Financial Overview

Delivering our essential programme of work is dependent on our fundraising efforts which are led by our fundraising trustee, supported by the General Manager. For the year ended 31/03/2025, there was a surplus of 32,228 compared to income deficit of 16,515 in prior year (ending 31/03/2024). In 2024/25 our income was 92,733 (2023/24: 43,242) versus our expenditure of 60,505 (2023/24: 59,757). This represented an improvement as we began to feel the benefit of bringing on our fundraising specialist trustee. However, to move towards our ambitions, we require a more diverse mix of income streams and better distribution across these streams.

Income comes primarily from Trusts and Grants (90%) with individual donations and individual supporters fundraising effort making up the remainder (10%).

We are in the final stretch of website redevelopment and looking forward to a new site that enables our ambitions to build stronger ongoing relationships with our supporters, host patient appeals, and actively engage with our audience.

## Strategic Goals and Objectives

Our ambitions for the next three fiscal years (FY 25-26, 26-27, and 27-28) include expanding our geographical coverage, establishing financial sustainability, further professionalising our structure and operations, educating people with a focus on youth-centred programmes, and collaborating through partnerships.
