Race Against Blood Cancer Annual Report, Fiscal Year 2023-2024
The Trustees of Race Against Blood Cancer are pleased to present our Annual Report which covers the fiscal year 1st April 2023 to 31st March 2024.
In the UK blood cancer patients from a Global Majority background have a significantly higher postdiagnosis mortality rate when compared to White Northern European patients. A White Northern European patient has a 70% or more chance of finding a match compared to a 20% or less chance for a Global Majority patient.
Race Against Blood Cancer was founded in 2015 by a group of friends who received the devastating news of a close friend’s blood cancer diagnosis. A lifesaving match depends on finding a stem cell or bone marrow donor with a similar ethnicity as the patient and it was even more devastating to realise that the chance of finding a match was significantly lower because of a mixed ethnic background. This group of friends were inspired to join the fight for health equality and give every blood cancer patient the best possible chance of surviving blood cancer regardless of background.
At RABC our vision is that one day, all blood cancer patients will have the equal opportunity of a quality stem cell match.
Our mission is to save more lives by addressing the stark inequality of finding a stem cell match for Global Majority blood cancer patients by recruiting more people from these backgrounds onto the UK’s register of stem cell and bone marrow donors.
To achieve our mission we deliver one of the only UK programmes aiming to engage the public in a face-to-face capacity and recruit new people from Global Majority backgrounds onto the donor register. We focus our efforts on partnering with organisations and in areas which have high levels of our target population, building trust and relationships with organisations and communities to recruit as many Global Majority donors as possible each year.
Our 'Save a Life’ Programme (SLP) has developed over 9-years and consists of Donor Drive events, where we directly sign people up to the stem cell and bone marrow donor register. We’ve recently added separate Education Talks, which raise awareness of the issue, where each talk is followed a week later by a Donor Drive event. This approach slows our recruitment in real terms but invests in longer-term attitude change in people we hope will become lifelong advocates. Our programme is delivered across the Midlands, and we have a national reach because the donor registry is accessed across the UK.
For countless people living with blood cancer and other blood disorders, the search for a matching stem cell donor is a race against time. Your willingness to donate could offer them the priceless gift of a second chance at life.

Youth Education Talks
Historically we’ve worked closely with local educational organisations including Shrewsbury College Group, Birmingham Newman University and Coventry University to deliver donor drives. This year we began tweaking our Save a Life Programme (SLP) approach towards a younger audience with the Youth Education Programme (YEP) in partnership with Anthony Nolan. This consists of delivering a talk aiming to raise awareness of the underrepresentation issue, bust the many myths that currently exist around the sign-up process, and educate young people on the simple process of becoming a stem cell or bone marrow donor. We then follow with our traditional Donor Drive, having warmed up our audience ahead of time, giving them time to discuss with their friends and families, and creating multiple opportunities for them to choose whether to donate by interacting twice over a week or so, instead of as a one-off. We encourage attendees to drive longevity by also encouraging attendees to volunteer for us on future donor drives and offer them the opportunity of being trained with us to equip them to run their own donor drives.
Donor Drives
We delivered 48 events (46 donor drives and 2 educational events) this year due to our increased focus on educational institutions, and the two-step Youth Education Programme (YEP). Each donor drive sees us set up a stall, at a University, Community Centre, sporting event or other high footfall area, and invite people to commit to join the register. Donors are given a simple kit to collect a saliva sample which we send off to one of two UK organisations (Anthony Nolan & DKMS) who manage the UK donor register, tissue typing laboratory and matching service. Donor drives are delivered by a team of dedicated volunteers and aim to simplify the donor sign up process and make it more accessible for everyone.
Employees and Governance
Race Against Blood Cancer is a registered charity and at present the core team includes one full time Engagement Manager, and one part time General Manager. At 1.6 FTE, our reach is much greater than our size suggests, and we rely heavily on an incredible team of around 20 volunteers to deliver the large number of events each year.
We are governed by a racially diverse Board of Trustees, led by our Chair, Jacob Knox-Hooke.

Achievements and performance
Save a Life Programme (Donor Recruitment)
In 2023/24 we delivered 48 events (46 donor drives and 2 educational drives) and recruited 576 new people onto the stem cell and bone marrow donor register. Our increased educational activity has impacted our number of sign-ups, as we play the longer game, investing our time in those who we hope will become longer term supporters and advocates. Of these stem cell donors, 38% are from our target group compared to an average of 23% from the other donor recruiting organisations.
As a result of previous years’ achievements, an estimated 15 of the stem cell donors we recruited in FY23/24 were potential matches for patients in need.
Since we started nine years ago, we have saved more than 12 lives, with donors all coming from the pool of more than 12,000 donors recruited by RABC since 2015.

Our spokesperson at Anthony Nolan said of our partnership:
“Race Against Blood Cancer (RABC) and Anthony Nolan (AN) have been working in Partnership since 2019, and really stepped up in activity from 2021 when RABC ran a series of very successful donor recruitment events with the National Citizen Service. At the end of 2023, we updated our recruitment agreement and RABC proposed an ambitious recruitment strategy and KPIs, which I am delighted to say they have surpassed.
It has been so impressive to see RABC pivot their approach to recruitment this year to engage more young people - forging new connections, trialling new approaches and successfully shifting their focus to a younger, more targeted audience...so they can reach even more young people where they’re at; share facts, bust myths and help each individual to make a safe, informed decision about donation.
Race Against Blood Cancer set out to recruit 300 people to the register across the first 3 months of this year, to recruit quality donors who we know will provide the best possible outcomes for patients.

Part of this is recruiting young donors, between the ages of 16-23. 84% of RABC’s recruitment is people aged 16-23 (compared to Anthony Nolan overall which is 80%). The other key area of focus is recruiting more donors from minority ethnic backgrounds as we are committed, at RABC and AN, to ensuring that every patient has access to a stem cell transplant. 38% of the people RABC recruited are from minority ethnic backgrounds, compared to 23% on average across Anthony Nolan. Not only are RABC committed to recruiting donors, they have demonstrated that they’re committed to recruiting quality donors who will go on to save the lives of patients now and in the future.
We're excited to continue to grow our partnership with Race Against Blood Cancer, and can’t wait to see the lifesaving impact they have in the local community and beyond!”
Fundraising
Delivering our essential programme of work is dependent on our fundraising efforts which are led by the General Manager. In FY21/22 we invested in hiring a new General Manager primarily to support our ability to generate funds. This role has taken time to bed in with fundraising income remaining static at £25k in FY22/23 while operating costs increased to £50k. By FY23/24 we have seen the return on this investment with £60k raised because of concerted efforts by the General Manager and Trustees to ensure the sustainable finances and the security of the organisation.
Income comes primarily from Trusts and Grants (90%) with individual donations and individual supporters fundraising effort making up the remainder (10%).
In 2022 we received funding to re-develop our website, and the work is underway. Our vision is for our website to enhance our brand awareness and allow us to better celebrate our successes, host patient appeals, and actively engage with our audience. This work has been tendered out and we have successfully contracted this work to Webbed Feet developers (late 2023).
Collaboration and strategic impact
In this period, we contributed to the inaugural ‘Where Are the Nation’s Donors’ report commissioned by the new All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) ‘Ethnicity Transfusion and Transplantation’, helping to bring attention to the stark health inequality.
We envisage more work to be done with regards to our digital engagement to increase awareness through online media. Over the last year, we have continued to share case studies of those affected by blood cancer and have seen an increase in individuals holding their own ‘in-support of’ fundraising events to harness much needed funds for our work.
For the first time, we have secured a charity Ambassador, an up-and-coming boxer from the Shropshire area, and are partnering with him to put on events to bring more attention to the cause and the charity.
Through the NBTA and close collaboration with other small charities, we have seen the Aligned Registry (AN, DKMS, WBMDR and NHSBT) increase their ethnic minority donor targets and enhance their contractual alignment into 2024 and beyond. We have established an ongoing series of

meetings with the Aligned Registry, with the goal of collaborating more closely, and the hope of taking more responsibility for ethnic minority recruitment.

Statement from the Chair of Trustees
Collaboration has been key to a successful year, as we continue to build post-pandemic momentum with our Youth Education Programme, contribution to the new APPG report and our website redevelopment. Landing our first ambassador has been an exciting development, preparing us to leverage his audience to grow our awareness in the Shropshire area.
We continue to strengthen our partnerships and evolve our structural approach to engaging volunteers to offer pro bono support with projects such as designing new marketing material.
We aim to continue to increase our attractiveness to funders to strengthen our foundations and grow our operation, with the future ambition over the next three years to get ourselves into a position to begin scaling the charity operations up.
