Stem cell and bone marrow transplants are now regularly used as curative treatments for patients with blood cancer (such as lymphoma, myeloma and leukaemia). Yet 4 in 5 patients from black, Asian, mixed-heritage or other minority ethnic groups are unable to find a donor match.

Race Against Blood Cancer works to increase the total number of people on the stem cell and bone marrow register, with a particular emphasis on increasing the level of sign up from minority groups – whether defined by race, ethnicity or gender – who are vastly underrepresented on the donor registry at present. Our vision is that one day, all blood cancer patients will have the equal opportunity of a quality stem cell match.

We have a simple overarching strategy to deliver on our vision:

1. Raise awareness of the underrepresentation issue and improve apathy;

2. Educate people on the process of becoming a donor and demystifying the many myths that currently exist; and

3. Help simplify the donor sign up process, making it more accessible for everyone.

The Trustees of Race Against Blood Cancer are pleased to present our Annual Report which covers the financial year 1st April 2020 to 31st March 2021. This reporting period proved to be more difficult than ever due to the worldwide Covid-19 pandemic. In-person donor recruitment was not possible for much of the year, which had a significant impact on our performance.

However, due to our efforts of previous years, some of our potential stem cell donors continued to be matched to patients in need, with the charity now responsible for 16 stem cell transplants from the pool of nearly 10,000 donors that we have recruited.

## **Employees**

General Manager Julie Child

Julie is supported by a number of committed individuals who work for the charity on a freelance basis; Gemma Elsmore, our Engagement Co-ordinator for Shropshire and Alex Morrison, our Engagement Co-ordinator for London. Emma Brown, our Social Media Manager was replaced by a new Communications Officer, Tess Suleman, at the start of the new financial year. The Trustees would like to thank Emma for all the support she has given to the charity since it was established.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Julie was furloughed for a considerable proportion of the financial year in order to protect the dwindling of precious reserves given the downturn in donor recruitment activities.

In addition to our paid staff, we are ably supported by a number of volunteers who assist with our finance administration and donor recruitment events. Our grateful thanks must go to this group for their commitment to the charity; they are instrumental to our current and future success.

## **Donor recruitment**

Due to the pandemic, all face to face donor recruitment events stopped for several months and we were only able to carry out two no-contact donor drives in the year. However, we continued to recruit online with our existing registry partner, DKMS, as well as setting up a new partnership with Anthony Nolan in order to share patient stories with a view to recruiting to their register.

In addition to the cancellation of existing events, we also had to deal with the postponement of other areas of our work including putting our pilot project – the West Midlands Community Engagement Manager role – on hold and having significant delays to the Wellcome Trust funded research project led by Dr Ros Williams at the University of Sheffield (https://mixandmatch.blog/).

Although 85% of our recruitment was carried out via the internet, we did manage to recruit nearly 200 new donors throughout the year, as well developing our networks within the industry further. As a direct result of this work, the charity became a founder member of the NBTA (National BAME Transplant Alliance) sub-committee on stem cell donation. This group, which consists of a number of charities as well as all four UK donor registries, is expected to have a significant role in developing a national donor recruitment strategy for people from black, Asian, mixed-heritage and minority ethnic communities over the next few years.

## **Fundraising**

Unfortunately, like many small charities, fundraising during this financial year was extremely difficult. The highly anticipated cycle event with Carl Ikeme and Joleon Lescott was postponed several times due to Covid-19 restrictions , though the desire is still there from all concerned to hold a cycle event at a later date.

The charity was fortunate to benefit from a £20,000 grant from The People’s Postcode Trust towards the West Midlands Community Engagement pilot project and we will commence this project as soon as circumstances permit. During the year, we benefitted from some pro-bono support from the Oxford University Student Consultancy group who were able to produce a significant amount of supporting research which we can use when this project gets underway.

Whilst the London Marathon didn’t go ahead as planned and was postponed until 2021, our ballot place holder, Vicky Thompson did an incredible job in dealing with this disappointment and still ran 26.2 miles to raise funds for the charity.

The charity is exempt from corporation tax on its charitable activities.

## **Stocks**

Stock is included at the lower of cost or net realisable value. Donated items of stock are recognised at fair value which is the amount the charity would have been willing to pay for the items on the open market.

## **Trade and other debtors**

Trade and other debtors are recognised at the settlement amount due after any trade discount offered. Prepayments are valued at the amount prepaid net of any trade discounts due.

## **Cash and cash equivalents**

Cash and cash equivalents comprise cash at bank and on hand, demand deposits with banks and other short-term highly liquid investments with original maturities of three months or less and bank overdrafts. In the statement of financial position, bank overdrafts are shown within borrowings or current liabilities. In the Statement of Cash Flows, cash and cash equivalents are shown net of bank overdrafts that are repayable on demand and form an integral part of the company's cash management.

Short term creditors are measured at the transaction price. Other creditors and provisions are recognised where the charity has a present obligation resulting from a past event that will probably result in the transfer of funds to a third party and the amount due to settle the obligation can be measured or estimated reliably. Creditors and provisions are normally recognised at their settlement amount after allowing for any trade discounts due.

Page 10

**Race Against Blood Cancer Notes to the Accounts**

## **Research and development**

Expenditure on research and development is written off in the year in which it is incurred.

## **Foreign currencies**

Monetary assets and liabilities denominated in currencies other than the functional currency of the charity are translated at the rates of exchange prevailing at the end of the reporting period.

Transactions in currencies other than the functional currency of the charity are recorded at the rate of exchange on the date that the transaction occurred.

All exchange differences are are taken into account in arriving at net income/expenditure.

## **Leased assets**

Where the charity enters into a lease which entails taking substantially all the risks and rewards of ownership of an asset, the lease is treated as a finance lease.

Leases which do not transfer substantially all the risks and rewards of ownership to charity are classified as operating leases.

Assets held under finance leases are initially recognised as assets of the charity at their fair value at the inception of the lease or, if lower, at the present value of the minimum lease payments. The corresponding liability to the lessor is included in the balance sheet date as a finance lease obligation. Lease payments are apportioned between finance expenses and reduction of the lease obligation so as to achieve a constant rate of interest on the remaining balance of the liability. Finance expenses are recognised immediately, unless they are directly attributable to qualifying assets, in which case they are capitalised in accordance with the charity's policy on borrowing costs.

Assets held under finance leases are depreciated in the same way as owned assets.

Operating lease payments are recognised as an expense on a straight-line basis over the lease term. In the event that lease incentives are received to enter into operating leases, such incentives are recognised as a liability. The aggregate benefit of incentives is recognised as a reduction of rental expense on a straight-line basis.

## **Pension costs**

The charity operates a defined contribution plan for its employees. A defined contribution plan is a pension plan under which the company pays fixed contributions into a separate entity. Once the contributions have been paid the company has no further payments obligations. The contributions are recognised as expenses when they fall due. Amounts not paid are shown in accruals in the balance sheet. The assets of the plan are held separately from the company in independently administered funds.

## **Receipt of donated goods, facilities and services**

All donated goods, facilities and services received are recognised within incoming resources and expenditure at an estimate of the value to the charity.

## 2 **Company status**

The company is a private company limited by guarantee and consequently does not have share capital.
