Chair’s Preface
It gives me great pleasure to introduce the Annual Report of Subrang Arts for the year 2023/24.
Our objective has always been to foster and promote South Asian performing arts through an educational programme of dance, music, arts festivals, exhibitions and other cultural activities. This year was more significant as Croydon was celebrating the Borough of Culture programme and we were involved in this programme proactively. We have been able to undertake numerous activities covering many art forms in this financial year with the support of funders like The Jack Petchey Foundation, National Lottery Heritage Fund , Arts Council England and Croydon Council. We are eternally grateful for their support.
Our aim is to provide inclusive participatory arts learning experiences and we seek collaboration with all kinds of venues and community groups. We have undertaken collaborative projects throughout the year. We are supported by a strong and dedicated Executive Committee comprising of committed volunteers whose skills and experience continue to contribute to the charity very well.
Our Committee’s imagination, creativity and dedication has enabled us to achieve greater resilience through stronger governance, increased management skills, fresh sources of expertise and advice.
Lata.Desai (Chairperson)

Key Achievements in 2023/24
Our regular dance classes continued throughout the year. We have been able to offer all styles of Indian dance – Bharatnatyam, Kathak, Bollywood and Folk. This has catered for all tastes and attracted people from all walks of life. Through these dance activities, we have noticed huge benefits for people as they have not only improved their fitness and health but have also learnt about their rich cultural heritage.
We continued with the Jack Petchey Silver Achievement Award Scheme. We were able to award three young people for their achievements. We were able to nominate a Volunteer Leader for the Leader’s Award too. We took our students to an educational trip to Fairfield Halls funded by Jack Petchey Foundation.
We initiated Yoga classes which have really improved health of all participants.
Croydon became the ‘London Borough of Culture’. Subrang Arts engaged proactively in all the activities as part of this year long celebration. This was followed by a unique visual arts project called ‘Kalasetu’ where people were taught the skills of batik silk painting by Kinetika who created a programme of learning activities for school students of Norbury Manor Girls School and local communities. Team Subrang trained a group of more than 30 people who then went on to create 50 silk scarves and 50 flags together with a Queen costume for Croydon Mela and Carnival. We were invited to the London Mayor’s Diwali Celebration at Trafalgar Square which was indeed the highlight of our Silk project.
Our dance faculty also continued with the Choir project called ‘Rang Dhvani’ with the Indian Choir ‘Bharatiya Vrund Gaan’ and performed at Watford Palace theatre
We continued with smaller projects of pottery, beadwork, quilling, katha embroidery workshops which inspired and engaged many women. Our craft programme has now established very well where we are able to invite varied craftspeople to share their skills.
Croydon Council supported a unique Indo Spanish cross cultural project with renowned musicians and dancers. This collaboration explored the intercultural journey undertaken by the gypsy tradition of Flamenco into its Indian roots in an emotional encounter between Flamenco music, voices, Hindustani compositions and Kathak/Flamenco dance. The performance was showcased to a full house at Fairfield Halls, Croydon and received rave reviews.
