Chair’s Preface

Chair’s Preface

It gives me great pleasure to introduce the Annual Report of Subrang Arts for the year 2022/23.

Our objective has always been to foster and promote South Asian performing arts through an educational programme of dance, music, arts festivals, exhibitions and other cultural activities. We have been able to undertake numerous activities covering many art forms in this financial year with the support of funders like The Jack Petchey Foundation, Heritage Lottery Fund, Arts Council England.

Our aim is to provide inclusive participatory arts learning experiences and we seek collaboration with all kinds of venues and community groups. We have undertaken collaborative projects throughout the year. We are supported by a strong and dedicated Executive Committee comprising of committed volunteers whose skills and experience continue to contribute to the charity very well.

Our Committee’s imagination, creativity and dedication has enabled us to achieve greater resilience through stronger governance, increased management skills, fresh sources of expertise and advice.

Key Achievements in 2022/23

Our regular dance classes continued throughout the year. We have been able to offer all styles of Indian dance – Bharatnatyam, Kathak, Bollywood and Folk. This has catered for all tastes and attracted people from all walks of life. Through these dance activities, we have noticed huge benefits for people as they have not only improved their fitness and health but have also learnt about their rich cultural heritage.

We continued with the Jack Petchey Silver Achievement Award Scheme. We were able to award three young people for their achievements.

We completed our multi-dimensional exhibition and events programme of ‘Roots and changes - Gujarati influences’ funded by National Heritage Lottery Fund and in collaboration with Brent Museum and Archives . The Finale took place at the British Museum with a day long events programme featuring music, dance, crafts and story telling for people of all age groups.

We participated in a panel discussion at the National Archives in collaboration with the British Ugandan Asians @ 50 who celebrated the 50[th] Anniversary of the Ugandan expulsion. The panellists were established academics and people with ‘lived’ experience who gave an insight into their life after expulsion and their new life in Britain.

Croydon became the London Borough of Culture. Subrang Arts engaged proactively in all the activities as part of this year long celebration and were the main performers with the London Mozart Players for the ‘Oratorio of Hope’ Opening ceremony at Fairfield Halls. This was followed by a unique visual arts project called ‘Kalasetu’ where people were taught the skills of batik silk painting by Kinetika who created a programme of learning activities for school students of Norbury Manor Girls School and local communities. Team Subrang trained a group of more than 30 people who then went on to create 50 silk scarves and 50 flags together with a Queen costume for Croydon Mela and Carnival.

Our dance faculty also embarked upon a collaborative project called ‘Rang Dhvani’ with the Indian Choir ‘Bharatiya Vrund Gaan’ . The first show was held at Epsom Playhouse to a full house.

We also participated in the South Asian Heritage month at ITV studios.

We continued with smaller projects of cookery, pottery, beadwork craft workshops which engaged people of all age groups.
