Chair’s Preface

It gives me great pleasure to introduce the Annual Report of Subrang Arts for the year 2021/22.

Our objective has always been to foster and promote South Asian performing arts through an educational programme of dance, music, arts festivals, exhibitions and other cultural activities. We have been able to undertake numerous activities covering many art forms in this financial year with the support of funders like The Jack Petchey Foundation, Heritage Lottery Fund, Arts Council England.

Our aim is to provide inclusive participatory arts learning experiences and we seek collaboration with all kinds of venues and community groups. We have undertaken collaborative projects throughout the year. We are supported by a strong and dedicated Executive Committee comprising of committed volunteers whose skills and experience continue to contribute to the charity very well.

Our Committee’s imagination, creativity and dedication has enabled us to achieve greater resilience through stronger governance, increased management skills, fresh sources of expertise and advice.

Lata.Desai (Chairperson)

Key Achievements in 2021/22

Our regular dance classes continued throughout the year. We have been able to offer all styles of Indian dance – Bharatnatyam, Kathak, Bollywood and Folk. This has catered for all tastes and attracted people from all walks of life. Through these dance activities, we have noticed huge benefits for people as they have not only improved their fitness and health but have also learnt about their rich cultural heritage.

We continued with the Jack Petchey Silver Achievement Award Scheme. We were able to award three young people for their achievements.

We undertook a cross cultural project called ‘Peace and Harmony’ with the London Mozart Players. This was a unique collaboration between Western and Indian classical musicians as well as dancers. The project was very successful and proved that music and dance can cross cultural boundaries, strengthen cultural relations based on the exchange of ideas, knowledge, work and artistic practice. This project was funded by Arts Council England.

Our multi-dimensional exhibition and events programme of ‘Roots and changes -Gujarati influences’ funded by National Heritage Lottery Fund and in collaboration with Brent Museum and Archives continued during this year. It highlighted the cultural heritage of the Gujarati diaspora in Brent. The inspiring exhibition told the story through oral histories, objects, personal reflections, photographs, films, talks, lively arts and cultural activities. The exhibition ran over a period of five months from April 2021- August 2021. We collaborated with numerous local organisations like the British Museum, Neasden Temple, Sanatan Temple in Wembley who endorsed our commitment to community collaboration. We were also able to invite high profile academics, film makers, artisans, musicians and craftspeople to the event series. This turned out to be a very high profile project which gave opportunities to professional as well as amateur artists to present their work to audiences and participants, both live and online. We developed a website www.rootsandchangesgujaratiinfluences.com where all the exhibition outputs have been deposited.

We participated in the South Asian Heritage month at School of Oriental and African Studies and undertook arts and crafts activities as well as a music concert in the Brunei Gallery

We continued with smaller projects of cookery, beadwork craft workshops, student showcase and a Garba dance event
