Chair’s Preface
It gives me great pleasure to introduce the Annual Report of Subrang Arts for the year 2020/21
Subrang Arts is dedicated to the promotion and development of South Asian arts. We profile and programme new and culturally exciting diverse arts by creating and developing high quality dance productions, visual arts exhibitions, heritage projects, music concerts, arts festivals, workshops and commissions with artists across all art forms. One of our objectives is to make diverse arts accessible to all communities and give opportunities to people to learn new skills, cultivate their ambitions and explore cross cultural art forms too. We actively engage people of all age groups in our activities, give them a supportive environment in which transformative experiences and exciting intercultural exchanges take place.
The increased activities have seen Subrang raise its profile right across the borough and beyond it with community groups, arts organisations, partners and funders. We have built upon this valuable momentum and implemented a manageable strategy which has been consistent with our brand message and programme offer.
This has been a difficult year due to the unforeseen pandemic, however due to the imagination, dedication and resilience of our committed committee members and volunteers, we were able to overcome the difficulties and we continued with our activities. We were also supported well by The Jack Petchy foundation and the National Heritage Lottery Fund.

Key Achievements in 2020/21
-
During the pandemic, we continued with our regular classes virtually. We have been able to offer all styles of Indian dance – Bharatnatyam, Kathak, Bollywood and Folk. This has catered for all tastes and attracted people from all walks of life. Through these dance activities, we have noticed huge benefits for people as they have not only improved their fitness and health but have also learnt about their rich cultural heritage.
-
We continued with the Jack Petchey Silver Achievement Award Scheme. We were able to award three young people for their achievements.
-
Our multi-dimensional exhibition and events programme of ‘Roots and changes -Gujarati influences’ funded by National Heritage Lottery Fund was undertaken in collaboration with Brent Museum and Archives. It highlighted the cultural heritage of the Gujarati diaspora in Brent. The inspiring exhibition told the story through oral histories, objects, personal reflections, photographs, films, talks, lively arts and cultural activities. The exhibition ran over a period of five months from April 2021- August 2021. We collaborated with numerous local organisations like the British Museum, Neasden Temple, Sanatan Temple in Wembley who endorsed our commitment to community collaboration. We were also able to invite high profile academics, film makers, artisans, musicians and craftspeople to the event series. This turned out to be a very high profile project which gave opportunities to professional as well as amateur artists to present their work to audiences and participants, both live and online. We developed a website www.rootsandchangesgujaratiinfluences.com where all the exhibition outputs have been deposited.
