## **ANNUAL REPORT 2019-20**

## Chair’s Preface

It gives me great pleasure to introduce the Annual Report of Subrang Arts for the year 2019/20

This has been a momentous year for us as we completed one of our major touring production ‘Shakuntala’ in time before the COVID crisis struck. As a leading south asian arts organisation in South London, we were able to successfully deliver this project which has enriched, engaged and entertained numerous communities. The positive influence on them by the virtue of their immersion into our activities has created stronger connections between people of all age groups. Despite the unprecedented COVID crisis we were able to adjust our activities and continued with our work virtually which is indeed a testament to the strength of our teachers, students and dedicated committee.

I am immensely proud of our Committee members and volunteers who provide an excellent service and support whenever called for. Their imagination, creativity, and dedication has enabled us to achieve greater resilience through stronger governance, increased management skills, fresh sources of expertise, advice and working in partnerships with other organisations.

Lata Desai (Chairperson)

## **Key Achievements in 2019/20**

- Before March 2020, our core dance activities continued at various centres in South Croydon, Purley and Sutton. We were able to offer all styles of Indian dance – Bharatnatyam, Kathak, Bollywood and Keep fit. We started Keep Fit dance classes for our ‘Over 65 year olds’. Through these dance activities, we have noticed huge benefits for people as they have not only improved their fitness and health but have also learnt about the rich cultural heritage. The COVID crisis did not allow us to do classes on site but we managed to offer online classes to all students.

- We continued with the Jack Petchey Silver Achievement Award Scheme and were able to award three young people for their achievements. With the support of Jack Petchey grant, we organised ‘Strength and Conditioning’ workshops for dance with a Specialist instructor Seema De Jorg. A DVD was produced for our students which gave instructions on developing different components of the demands of dance - Speed, Agility, Strength, Power and Endurance. This was a great learning resource for our students.

- The national tour of ‘Shakuntala’ dance drama continued in the year with sell out shows at Barking, Milton Keynes, Coventry, Birmingham and Croydon. This unique intergenerational arts project gave opportunities for all age groups to work together through invention, collaboration, inclusive performances, teamwork, technology, innovation. We brought it to our audiences with all its depth, dramatic intensity and memorable characters. This was one of our most successful touring production to date.

- The COVID crisis in March 2020 did not allow us to complete our ‘Peace and Harmony’ project with the London Mozart Players. However, all the musicians and dancers utilised the lockdown period for creative brain storming sessions and prepared the full repertoire which will now be showcased in October 2021 at Fairfield Halls, subject to COVID restrictions.

- The ‘Roots and Changes – Gujarati influences’ heritage project started in earnest and lot of research and preliminary activities started taking shape. We engaged professional exhibition consultant who helped us develop the project and connect us with lots of other heritage agencies in the process. We also worked with community groups in Brent and engaged numerous people in arts and crafts activities. Outputs of these workshops will then be displayed in the exhibition which will take place in Spring 2021
