May 2015. The conversi¢)n of the ch¥itable trust into a CIO was approved at an Exu3ordinary
Generdl Mee¢in8 of the M￿berS of the Chathy held in the Vil* Hall. Paxton on the 29th January
2015.

modest celebrntion at the Bridge when. at enttly midday- 200 yws to the minute after Ir had
been declared open by Willlam Molfe WS. the Chairnwi of the North Durham and Ben*Ack
Turnpike Trnst*- our Chairnun. Robert Hunter, woposed a t¢*st to Union Bridge and Capt Sir

Three major events had been mevculousty planned for that h*end. Our Patron. Dr Professor
Roland Paxton of Heriot Wary Unl￿$1¢Y. had assembled a panel of distinguished engineers.

sponsored the closing concert of the Muslc at Paxton ftsuval, with a proyamme of Scottish and
European orthestral music In fdvour at the Eqinning of the nineteertth century. and the day woutd
have concluded suitabty wlth a cdehfion ceilidh in a rrrdrquee in the grounds of Paxton Hous
overlooking the Brid82. The Covi&19 rtttricri￿$ in force at that time dictafftd the aE4ndonment of
all three events.
The loss of the Symposium was ameliordteAI to an extent ty the publication of a fulty-illusrdted
coMmer￿ra￿Ve book edited by Profesx)r Paxton and including synoptic essay5 of the tslks vthich

26th July 2020 and was widdy arculated be￿d the Charity. It was universalty wdl-received. The
first print of 750 copies was soon exhausted and it was necessary to commission a second updated

The contrdtt for the re5toralion of the the iMprov&￿t of its immediate surroundings and
enhanced interpretation of its heritsge let in mi&2020 to The Spencer Group of Hull wrth
whom the Friend& a5 W￿[ as the lo￿ communicies ¢)n both sides of the River. soon established

2020 and by Marth 3 Ix 2021 the Bridge wa5 W disrrmntjed.

Our Chairman. Robert Hunter. represertts the Charity'5 interest5 at regular meetings of the Projert
Board, which also comprises representstives of Northumberland CoLtnty Council. Scottysh ￿rderS
Council. Museums Northumberland. The SFerw Croup and the Nation￿ Lottery Heritage Fund.
As the community interest members of the Board, we are pains to ensure that the Vie￿ and
interesrs of the local communÈties- wrth parricular refereno to traffic marHgemenL or parklng and
Yisitor arnenitles- are proFely arttculated.
Our qua￿rty prlnt Newsletter. A the vthlch covers not only matters directly
concerned wÈth the Bridg& its heritage and r*tOratI￿ aiso items of wider interest concerned
with the Bridge and the area in whiph it 15 SiUAted, has been sUp￿emented for the durntyon of the
restoration work by a monthly eleerronic fulty-illustrdted sisw publbcarion with derniled informaoon
on the progress of the contracL
In addiuon to their role as a community445ed supporter of the two local authoriues in thelr projett
to restore the Bridge to a ffiJll state of recoir to guaranoe rt5 continuing tXi￿nce for a further 120
years, it is a princiFoI funccion of the Friends to promote and publicise the Bndge'5 unique
engineerin& ardiitecwral and historic heritsge Erf)th localty and further afidd, natsonally and
internauonally. To contynve to maintain the profile of the Bridge and the restorduon projea the
TrusTres. Friends and supporters have secured publicity through Yarious medi& including televislon
and radio. local and national press ar￿ periodicals and Thlks and pres&itations to lo￿ or8anisatlon&
We were saddened by tiie deCi￿Oft of Hutton and paxt￿ Communlty Council. in March 2021. to
withdrdw representation from the Chary on the grounds that they considered that their input wds
comple￿. We are pleased that Horncliffe Parish Council continue to be fully represented and are
taking steps to amend the Constitucion ro ensure that the communrcies of Fishwicl Huryon and
Paxton as well as Horncliffe continue to have a direa voice on the governlng body of the Charity.
We also actively seek expressions of interest from persons locally, and further afieFd, willing to act as
Trustees.
Our Honornry Secretary, Edvrdrd Cavéthom. was honovred to recei￿ on behalf of the Friends, the
annual Tweed Forum Rivtr ChampIc￿ Av*vd for pn)moung the inwests of the Bridge and its
restorauon.

The financlal statwnents have been prepared under the historical cost convention.
The Accounts (financial statements) have been wepared in accordance with the
Statement of Recommended Prattice: Accounting and reporting by Charlties
eparing thelr accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard
applicable In the UK and Republlc of Ireland (FRS 102) issued in the UK and Re
These accounts have been prepared in accordano with FRS 102 "The Financial
Reporring Standard applicable in the UK and Republk of Ireland" ("FRS 102").
"Accounting and Reporting by Charities" the Statrment of Recommended Practice
for charicles applying FRS 101 the Charities Act 201 I, the Charities and Trustee
Investment (Scotland) 2005 Act and UK Generalty Accepted Accounting Prattice as
it applies from l January 2019. The Charity is a Public Benefft Entity as defined by
FRS 102.
The accounts are prepared in sterling . which is the functional currency of the
Charity. Monetary amounts in these financRI staternents are rounded to the
nearest £.
1.2 Chan8e of Accountlng Pollcy
The total income for the Friends has exceeded the limits for which receipt and
payment accounting is perrnitred. Accordingty, accn4J accounting is now being
applled.
1.3 Going concern
At the time of approving the accounrs. the trustees have a reasonable expectation
that the Charity has adequate resources to continue in operational exÈstence for the
foreseeable fuDJre. The trustees continue to adopt the "goin£ concern" basis of
account￿ in prepartng the account&
1.4 Charitable funds
Unrestricted funds are aydilable for use at the discretion of tr* trustees in
furtherance of their charirknle objects unless the funds have been designated for
other purposes.

Restricted fvnds are subiett to specific condTcions by donors a5 to how they may be
used. The Charity helé no such restritted funds in the financial year to 31- March
2019.
Designated funds are donations held by the Charity in respert of non-statutory
elements of the Union Bridge restoration conrdtt 2019-2012 and are designated for
transfer to Northumberland County Council in that connectton.
1.5 Incoming resourcès
.ncome is recognised véhen the Charity is legally entitled to it after any perforniance
conditions have been me4 the amounts can be rneasu￿d reliabty, and It is probable
that income will be received.
Cash donations are recognised on receipL Other donations are recognised once the
Charity has been notified of the donation, unless perfornlance conditions require
deferral of the amount Income tsx recoverable in relauon to donations received

Legacies are recognised on receipt or otherwise rf the Charty has been notlfied of
