Bert Jansch Foundation – Annual Report 2020

Bert Transcribed — Bert Jansch Song Book

This book, with 24 songs was published by Music Sales in August 2017. It continues to receive good reviews and is selling well. A second print run was made in December 2018.

Music Sales has since been taken over by American company, Hal Leonard. Staff are the same but processes slightly different. The transcription team is similar headed by Jon Riley and fans are clamouring to have the next volume. The next batch of thirty songs is completely ready. Hal Leonard has not yet agreed to publish volume 2. Geraldine is still patiently working on it.

Bert Jansch Gigs - Virtual

We had been hoping to arrange a live gig at the Cheese and Grain in Frome in June 2020 but after this had to be cancelled because of Lockdown we arranged four Virtual gigs in July and again in November. For each gig, we invited four of our Around the World in 80 Plays artists to offer a 30 minute set. This enabled the Bert Jansch Foundation to promote and highlight especially the young artists who have participated in the 80 plays project. BJF Young Artist Dariush Kanani hosted each gig and interviewed the artists . The tech side was handled by James Brooke of the Bert Jansch studio, Frome. They were livestreamed and available for playback on the BJF Facebook page and apparently more than 20 thousand people have since looked at them.

You can see one of them here:

https://www.facebook.com/763997147002806/videos/2739541542931512 We paid Dariush for his hosting. There was no other expense or income. We asked for donations first time for Save our Venues then for BJF.

2020 Workshops Report

Workshops went virtual in 2020 because of the Covid-19 lockdown . Nine workshops of three hours each were held over Zoom in May and again in October. There were three teachers, Jon Riley, Dariush Kanani and Paul Wassif. They each ran three sessions with a maximum six students, who paid £50 for one, or £40 each if buying more than one. Karen devised signup and payment sheets and we published this poster.

They were managed by Bert Jansch Young Artist, Dariush Kanani and the technical manager was James Brooke of the Bert Jansch studio in Frome. They were very popular and although not sold out, the project broke even or made a small profit. https://bertjanschfoundation.org/workshops

Bert Jansch Young Artists

In 2019 BJF decided to appoint two BJF ‘Young Artists’. These would be chosen from people who were highly talented but also motivated and able and willing to take Bert’s name and the work of the Foundation further. We chose two outstanding young guitarists Dariush Kanani and Sam Grassie (Sam looks and plays uncannily like a young Bert). They were officially appointed in April 2020 for two years. Dariush Kanani has excellently managed our gigs and workshops in 2020. Sam has run and will run more jam sessions, and both are working on a short list of songs for the Bert Inspired albums. It’s wonderful to have young artists working with the foundation. We will support their careers and they will support the Foundation and we will see how this goes. You can read about them on our website.

Awards:

This year we gave four awards. Two to students from Goldsmiths University of London (Goldsmiths Department of Music are very appreciative and manage the process very efficiently encouraging their students to engage in projects and apply for grants.

We supported Dylan Trenouth for The Art of the Song: Four days of tailored “Song Surgery” with Jane Taylor, a published singer/songwriter herself and coach to various other songwriters. We also supported Cassandra Layton with a total spend of £1000 to Goldsmith.

Directly we supported two of our 80-plays youngsters. We helped Campbell Baum who himself supports many young artists by organising gigs, tours and recordings. We gave him £500 to support a compilation album featuring arrangements of traditional songs, each performed by a different artist. We also gave £200 to Elliott Morris to support a recording of original songs. Total spend for 2020 was £1700. You can read about the recipients here https://bertjanschfoundation.org/grants

For Bert Jansch: Around the World in 80 Plays .

https://80plays.bertjanschfoundation.org/the-artists/tommy-emmanuel/

This amazing project where five Yamaha LL-TA guitars are travelling round the world (at Yamaha’s expense) is drawing to a close. At present one is sailing round Northern California; one is in Scotland, one with Beth Orton and one in London. Nearly of the potential 80 artists are already on the beautiful website. Several more artists and performed their songs and sent their videos and their artist pages are being processed. Guitars were locked down and restricted in their movements – but started moving again, being taken in for cleaning and servicing before being sent out gain. Beth Orton is about to play her song. We are nearing the end of the project …..

Cheese and Grain: Bert Jansch Studio

BJF is very pleased to partner with the Bert Jansch Studio in its Virtual gigs and workshops. Both our young artists want to record their next releases at the studio and have spoken to the relevant technical people. When Covid permits we will help them with this.

BJF Newsletter

A further three email newsletters were distributed in Spring Summer and Autumn of 2020. The mailing list on MailChimp has approximately 300 people who have contacted the Bert Jansch Foundation for various reasons and who have been asked if they would like to be on the mailing list. These have been compiled by Geraldine Auerbach but she would like somebody to take this role in future – maybe the BJF Young Artists, Dariush and Sam.
