Annual Report for Charity Commission and Strumpshaw Parish Council 1st April 2025 to 31st March 2026
Overview
The Strumpshaw Trust can give grants to those who live in the civil parish of Strumpshaw who need help because of youth, age, ill-health, disability, financial hardship or other disadvantage. It can also give grants to those community organisations most of whose members live in Strumpshaw, Buckenham or Hassingham. These grants may be used to promote recreation, education, leisure time pursuits and the arts as well as supporting facilities for public benefit. Grants would normally be for a specific project.
The Trustees will consider applications for grants to help an organisation buy equipment, to provide seed funding for a project or towards running costs. Grants towards running costs would be for one year only.
In addition, the Trustees will consider applications from community organisations to provide specific facilities for public benefit in Strumpshaw, Buckenham or Hassingham. Applicants would need to show the public benefit that would arise from the provision.
Permanent endowments
The Marsh
Strumpshaw Trust owns a 4.388 hectares marsh off Low Road, Strumpshaw which has been used to provide an income for charitable purposes since at least 1822. It is currently leased to a local farmer.
Shares
Strumpshaw Trust owns 442.60 Charities Official Investment Fund Income Shares.
Grants
Advertising the availability of grants
The range of grants that are available from the Trust is advertised in each issue of Parish News, the Parish Council web site and the Shoulder of Mutton’s Bushell web page. Guidance and application forms for each type of grant are available from the Chairman as well as through the Parish Council web site and the Shoulder of Mutton Bushell web page.
Individual applicants may be given a grant of up to £300 without being asked to provide a summary of their recent income and expenditure. Individual applicants looking for a

grant of £301 to £500 may be asked for such a summary. The normal maximum for a grant to an individual is £500.
Grants made
The Trustees received two applications for grants, one from an individual and one from Strumpshaw Parish Council. They gave a grant to a student to assist with the cost of a Visa application relating to travel to develop educational opportunities. The Trustees also gave a grant to Strumpshaw Parish Council to purchase and instal a community notice board which would be available to all residents.
Administrative costs
The Trustees renewed their Directors and Trustees liability insurance and appointed a firm of accountants as their agent to deal with HMRC in relation to a request that corporation tax should be paid.
Independent Financial Examiner
Pauline Terry, a retired qualified accountant, was appointed as the Independent Financial Examiner.
Trustees
The Strumpshaw Trust has places for seven trustees.
Three trustees, Mary Green, Nick Price and Martha Burton resigned during the financial year. Nick Price had been one of the Strumpshaw with Hassingham and Buckenham PCC’s appointees. The PCC appointed the Revd. Jane Morris to this vacancy. Mary Green had been appointed by Strumpshaw Parish Council. The Parish Council appointed Martha Burton to this vacancy. Unfortunately Martha Burton had to resign towards the end of the financial year because of ill health. The trustees intend to ask the Parish Council to fill this vacancy during the 2026/27 financial year.

Reserves policy
The Trustees have the following reserves policy:
The ability of the Trust to consider hardship grants will be protected by only spending the rental and share income on hardship grants in the year following its receipt. Any sums not spent on hardship grants in that year will be added to the Trust’s balances for use in future years for any of the Trust’s objectives.
