Cowbridge Music Festival rs registered as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation ICIOI (Reglstered Charity No.
11625241. The objects as stated in its goveming document. and for which the charity was established, are 'to
educate the public in the appreciation of music and other arts. principally by arran8inR an annual festival..
The festlval is held over two weeks in the autumn and consists of maln evening concerts. concerts for young
musiclans, a family concert and an outreach programme for schools and Ca￿ homes throughout the Vale of
Glamorgan and Bridgend. In 2017 the FestNal Frin8e was stsrted to take the festrval out of the main venues
and to invofve more local music groups.
The trustees are aware of their responsibilities in ensurlng that the festlval delivers identifiable beneflts to the
public In accord wlth establlshed objertlves and permitted activities. We refer to the guidance contained In
the Charlty Commission's general guidance on publK beneflt when reviewin8 our aims and objectives.
The festlval has as a prlorlty the aim to remove barriers. perceived and real, preventln8 the participation In
and the enjoyment of music. It airns to en8a8e the community as a whole. With public accesslblllty to the
concerts greatly In mlnd. provision Is made for the elderly, the disabled and those of Ilmlted means. Particular
Importance Is attached to gNing encouragement and opportunities to youn8 musicians. from the very youn8
to those at the be8lnnln8 of their careers in music.
No changes to the management structure of the festival were made in 2023. Mary Rose remalned as Chair of
the 8oard of Trustees, Joseph Fort and Rosalind Ventris as Artistic Dlrertors.
The Trustees are aware of Public Benefit provlslons of the Charities Art 2011 and of the guldance on them
publlshed by the Charity Commission. They are satisfied that the objects of the Charity and the actlvltles of the
Charity are within the definitions of Charltable Purposes as set down in the Act.
2023 Achlevements and Perfonnan
The 2023 Cowbridge Music Festival. held from 15" to 24 September, saw a packed programme of twefve
main concerts, an expanded Young Artist programme, the continuation of our schools oUt￿aCh, a new
Communlty Muslc Day, and a number of fringe evenls acro￿ the communlty.
Baritone RodeTick Williams and planlst lain 8urnslde opened the festival with their programme Yell me the
truth about love.. 5pannlrE several centuries and many styles, and delightin8 the capacity audience in Holy
Cross Church, our main concert venue.
The followlng day. our colleagues from BBC Radio 3 arrived for a second consecutive year to record two
concerts for subsequent broadcast. The first of these featured Trlo Gaspard, playing L￿pak'5'Dumw Piano
Trlo alongslde works by Smetana and Suk in a programme entitled 'Czech Stories.. Later that evening. Dvi tk)li,
a bandura duo formed by two Ukrainian fefu8ees. performed a moving programme of traditional Ukralnlan
folk music.
On the Sundayj vlollst land Artistic Director) Rosallnd Ventris and pianlst Llgr Williarns perfom)ed the two late
sonata5 for this combinatlon by Brahms. as well a5 lesser-known work5 by Weiner. Kodapy and Clara Schumann
This. the second recordin& was broadcast the following week on Radm) 3.

The festival continued with a huge variety of music. from the music and dance of the extremely popular Daniel
Martlnez Flamenco Company to a unique blend of Hindustani classlcal music. jazz. Welsh folk and rock,
performèd by the Indo-We15h band. Khamira.
Trio Anima were then welcomed back to Cowbridge. thelr
programme of musit for flute. viola and harp celebratin8 a number of contemporary Welsh composers.
Thls year saw us develop the Young Artists. programme by including coaching and buslness mentorshlp In
order to equlp them better for the profession. Benefttin8 were the strin8 quartet, Quartet Draig. who gave
free concert at the United Free Church. and the youn8 Welsh planlst Tomos Boyles.
The final v￿ekend also presented a considerable range of muslc: The Choir of St Paul's Knlghtsbridge
(conducted by the festivafs Artlstlc Director Joseph Fort} perfornied Bach's six motets in the church. while
later In the evening Dionne Bennett and The Pepper Seeds perfomed an eclectic array of muslc, Incorporatln8
jazz. funk and soul in the Duke of Wellin8ton pub.
Sunday morning brought with It the ever popular Family Concert, in which Children's Muslcal Adventures
introduced a packed theatre at Cowbrid8e Comprehensive School to Captain Patch, whom we joined on hSs
adventure to find a105t Welsh sea shanty, alded by several students from the RWCM&D. And as a 8rand finale

to present an upbeat and Ilvely sebection of jatz clas5iCS.
Schools and care homes outreach
Alon8side the concerts and frlnge activities, the fe5tivafs outreach pro8ramme continued with full days of
workshops at flve local primary schools, delivered by the ever popular Children's Musical Ath￿ntUreS. As In
previous years nearly IIXQ children greatly en￿Ved this opportunity to take part in Ilve music.
Festlval musicians visited six cafe homes In Cowbrid8e. Barry and Brid8end, bringlng Ilve muslc to members of
the local communtty whom li might not otherwise reach. Feedback from the homes spoke ofthe enjoyment
that these concerts brought.
The Frlnge
The annual Jau Brunch proved more popular than ever this year. Cardiff-based sln8er Sarah Meek joined
fortes with pianlst Dave Cottle to deliver a Iwely programme of upbeat hits. entertainin8 over slxty dlners at
The Bear Hotel. We a150 introduced a Musical Afternoon Tea at the Penny Farthin8 Cafe, featuring local celtic
harplst Delyth Jenkins.
We also held our flrst ever Community Muslc Day, whKh recelved a very wann receptlon from participants
and audience alike. The Rockin8 Recorders, the Sounds Familiar Community Cholr and the 08more SINfer Band
Wind Quartet gave short performances in Cowbridge Library. Glven the positrrfe reception to this new event
we plan to expand it in the 2024 festfval.
Atce5$1blllty and Incluslvlty
The festbval contlnues to underline its commltment to making MUSK accessible to all. Tlcket prfces forthe main
concert5 ranged from £12 to £20 with £1 tickets for children and students; It was good to see a number of
young people and attendees from mlnortty groups al the perfomiances.
The community Is keenly aware that the festtval provide5 an annual opportunity to experrence high quality
music that is excitin& inspiring and uplfftlng. The wide range of music, as well as the Intlmate and informal
settings of the venues. are seen as important in breaking down the barriers, per￿1Ved and real, to
enga8emeftt with the festival.

The future
Once again, in 2023, with generous support from charitable trusts, our sponsors and the Arts Council of Wales,
we were able to put on another festNal that was of 8reat benefft to the communlty, seNing people of all ages,
from the very young to the elderly and disabled.
Our fundamental task next year is to continue to maintain the sure footing of the festival and all our core
activities lincluding outreach} amid ever more challenging times for the arts. If we are able to secure the
necessary financial support, we are confident that with our careful management we will be ab￿ to ensure the
ongolng success of the festival over the years lo come.
Flnancial Review
The festival continued to receive strong support from the Arts Countil of Wales, a grant of £35,OW belng
made. of whlch £31,5(KJ was recelved in 2023 IA final payment foi 2022 of £31X)O was also recewedl.
Sponsorship by local businesses was slightty lower at £6990. while grants from trusts and foundation5 were
greater by 24% compared wlth ihe 2022 level. Once again, the festNal's finances were greatty stren8thened by
the Frlends, Association subscriptbons. Tlcket and other sales remalned at the 2022 level.
The success of the fvnding enabled the fesltval to finance a full two-week programme of concerts akJn8slde
the Festlval Frin8e and a h￿hlY successful schools outreach and care home programme of actlvltles.
With income from all sources amounting to £ICX).037 arbd expendlture to £98.342. cash reSen￿S were
Increased by £1,694 above the 2022 level to £30,131, a stron8 POSIt￿n from which to launch the 2024 festNal
and fulfill our obligations and ambitions for the benefit of the communlty.
Volunteers
The Trustees are heavily indebted to our many volunteers who distribute publicity materlal, provlde
accommodatlon and meals for musicians. or8anise and sell refreshments and asslst with Front of House
management and the Fr*nds' Assoclatlon.
Dlsclosure and Barrln8 Servlce
All Trustees, volunteers and member5 of partner organisations involved with the schools outreach, care homes
and concert5 involving youn8 musicians have DBS certificates.
