Ob"ectives and activities
The object ofAmersham Band is to improve, develop and advance the
public education in. and appreciation of. the art and science of brass
band music in all its aspects by any means the trustees see fit. including
through the presentation of public concerts and practi￿ and
perfomiance.

In planning the activities of Amersh8m Band, the Trustees have taken
into account the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public
benefit.
An important activity is for the band to perform at a wide range of evenls
to entertain the public. These events include formal concerts, civic and
public occasions, parades, fetes and other events. This has 8 benefit to
the local community by using music as a way to brtng people together
enhancing social cohesion.
In accordance with ihe charitable object, Amersham Band encourages
local people to lake up brass music by running regular rehearsals,
teaching sessions, open workshops. and demonstrations at schools and
public events. The band has a range of bands which cater for
experienced, intermediate, elementary and beginner levels of ability-

available to people of all ages and abilities.

The band runs three teaching groups and a Youth Band which are
specifically aimed al young people. There are strong benefits is
advancing music education locally for young people. In particular.
participating in music groups develops several skills including discipline,
teamwork, cooperation, self-confidence, ￿spOnsibl1[ty and social skills.
For teenagers, music can make a contribution to self-identity and is a
source of support when young people are feeling Iroubled or lonely.
The band prepares for and participates in music contests. improving
qLtality of perfomances and advancing the art of brass music for the
benefit of its members and the general public.
Amersham Band runs a bursary scheme to support those from
financially disadvantsged background.

The band is run entirely by unpald volunteers. wtth the exception of the
Musical Directors who receive payment for expenses. Band members
and non-playing volunteers give their time free of charge and meet their
own expenses in attending rehearsals, events and concerts. The
Trustees recognise the contribution of all these volunteers, without
whom the charity would not function.

Achievements and performance

achievements of the charity
during the year
The band has continued to thrive. By the end of the year the overall
membership had grown to 190 members, more than half of whom are
children. The band comprised nine separate bands as follows..

The various bands performed at a wide range of events during the year.
Highlights included a performance by Brass Roots at the Royal Albert
Hall as part of the 8uckinghamshire Schools event, an event providing a
musical guide lo a Brass Band, a brass workshop and concert at
Berkhamsted SGhool. A concert at Regents Hall in London and a
Remembrance Concert with Hendon SA Band. The ever-popular
Christmas Concert and performan￿$ of a live screening of The
Snowman helped to round off the year.
Amersham Big Band started a regular concert series at the Lifestyle
Centre, featuring top soloists. These attracted a new audien￿ and have
becom8 popular, sell-out events.
Amersham Band and Amersham Concert Brass competed in the
Regional Brass Band Championships, with both achieving good results.
Amersham Band also compeled in the Spring Feslival at Blackpool and
Community Band competed at the Addlestone Challenging Brass
Concert. The Youth Band competed in the National Youth
Championships in Stockport. Preparation and perfonnances at these
contests have helped to improve the standard of playing.
The band hosted a visit from the Fehlheim band {GeTmanyl, continuing
the long tradition of exchange visits with Amersham's ￿1n town, with joint
concerts in the Memorial Gardens and Lifestyle Centre. The band also
hosted a joint concert with the Youth Band and Hasle Skolekorps Band
INoway}. extending cross-cultural relationships with other countries.
The newly built bandroom continued lo provide a basis for further
expansion of the band's activities and also provides a useful facility for
other community activrties, including several Yoga and Pilates groups.
U3A orchestra, Chiltern Probus and other local groups. Private individual
music lessons have been provided at the bandroom and several Trinity
music exams have been hosted.
A nature and sustainability project continues to assess and protect the
natural environment and wildlife on the bandroom site. A number of
nature development and educational activities have been carried OLrt,
building further relationships wilh the wider local community.
In Octob8r 2023, Fred HarrSson stepped down as chairman of the band
afier 20 years leading the organisation. Philip Sweetman and Marion
Mayhew were appointed as Co-chairs.

Financial review
Brief statement of the
charity's policy on reserves
The trustees have set a policy to ensure an unrestricted reserve of
£5,000 as a minimum is kept in the current account. This is to ensure
short term commitments such as Musical Director expenses can be
sustained for at least 6 months.
The trustees have established a separate account for revenues and
running costs of the new bandroom. A reserve of £3,000 has been set for
this account to cover essential costs such as insurance and utili
costs.
