Structure, Governance and Management
Maxi’s Mates is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) established to relieve the suffering of dogs in need of care and attention for the public benefit.
The charity provides a safe haven for stray and surrendered dogs and works to secure suitable permanent homes for them. We believe that every dog deserves another opportunity, regardless of breed, age or behavioural needs. Dogs remain in our care for as long as necessary until an appropriate home is found.
The charity is managed by three Trustees and supported by a committee of six members together with a dedicated team of staff and volunteers.
During the year the charity employed 19 members of staff to meet increasing demand for kennel spaces and the growing number of stray and surrendered dogs requiring support.
Objectives and Activities
The charity’s objectives are:

To relieve the suffering of dogs in need of care and attention.

To provide shelter, care and rehabilitation for stray and surrendered dogs.

To promote responsible dog ownership.

To secure suitable permanent homes for dogs in our care.
To achieve these objectives, the charity:

Accepts stray dogs from local authority contracts.

Accepts owner-surrendered dogs where capacity allows.
-
Provides veterinary treatment, vaccinations, flea and worming treatments.

Carries out neutering on outreach programme and microchipping where appropriate.

Conducts home checks prior to rehoming.
The Trustees have had due regard to the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit when planning and carrying out the charity’s activities.
Achievements and Performance
Dog Welfare and Rehoming
Between 1 September 2024 and 31 August 2025:
-
187 stray dogs were admitted.
-
127 owner-surrendered dogs were accepted into care.
-
58 puppies were successfully rehomed.
Overall, the charity supported 372 dogs during the reporting period. The strays that didn’t go home came into Maxi’s Mates care.
The charity continued to provide comprehensive veterinary care, including vaccinations, neutering, flea and worming treatments and specialist veterinary interventions where required.
Faith and Her Puppies
One of the year’s most significant welfare achievements involved a heavily pregnant Lurcher named Faith, who entered our care on 3 October 2024 through a local authority dog warden service from another area.
Faith gave birth to seven puppies on 6 October 2024. Staff and volunteers provided twenty-four-hour care during the following eight weeks. One puppy required intensive support after developing symptoms associated with fading puppy syndrome and Faith subsequently developed pyometra.
Through the dedication of staff, volunteers and veterinary professionals, Faith and all seven puppies recovered successfully and were later rehomed into suitable permanent homes.
Education and Community Engagement
The charity continued to provide practical learning opportunities for students undertaking animal care and related studies at local colleges. We also assist several local schools taking up to 5 students at a time with the weekly work experience programme for Year 10 pupils.

Facility Improvements
In March 2025 the charity received £24,000 gifted from Save Our Strays to assist with increasing demand for kennel spaces.
This funding enabled the construction of six additional kennels incorporating enhanced welfare features including improved ventilation, raised sleeping areas and safer kennel layouts.
The additional kennels significantly increased the charity’s capacity to support dogs in need.
Financial Review
The charity continues to operate on a not-for-profit basis.
During the year the charity experienced significant increases in operational costs, particularly veterinary fees, electricity charges and fuel costs. Despite these challenges, the charity remained financially stable through prudent financial management, fundraising activities and grant funding.
Trustees maintain reserves sufficient to support ongoing operations, meet unforeseen expenditure and safeguard the charity’s future sustainability.
Reserves Policy
The Trustees recognise the importance of maintaining adequate reserves to ensure the continued operation of the charity.
Reserves are retained to:

Meet day-to-day operational costs.

Cover unexpected veterinary and maintenance expenses.

Protect the charity against fluctuations in income.
-
Support future development and welfare projects.
The Trustees regularly review reserve levels to ensure they remain appropriate for the charity’s activities and commitments.
Public Benefit Statement
The Trustees confirm that they have complied with their duty under Section 17 of the Charities Act 2011 to have due regard to the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit.
The charity continues to provide significant public benefit through the rescue, rehabilitation, care and rehoming of vulnerable dogs while supporting responsible pet ownership within the local community.
Plans for Future Periods
The charity intends to:
