Maxi's Mates is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO). The object of Maxi's Mates is for the benefit of the public to relieve the suffering of dogs in need of care and attention. We provide a safe haven for stray and surrendered dogs and to finding them their forever home. We firmly believe ALL dogs deserve another chance at finding that right home for them. We care deeply about dogs regardless of breed, age or whether they are sociable with other dogs or not. Maxi’s Mates will meet all their needs until we can find them their forever home and for however long it takes. We vaccinate, spay or neuter where possible and home check every home. Our mission is to protect our stray dogs and provide them with a safe place for as long as they need.
Maxi's Mates is governed by its 3 Trustees and supported by a committee of 6 people plus groups of volunteers. This year we employed more people which we now have 18 paid staff. This has been due to the high demand for kennel spaces and it is getting harder and harder each year with the increased influx of dogs as strays not claimed or people surrendering their pets as they say they can’t keep them anymore.
We also provide a practical learning environment for students from local colleges undertaking relevant studies. We have taken on a few of the students after finishing their courses as they had proved invaluable to us. They had demonstrated how dedicated and caring they were throughout the placement and impressed us so much we did not want to lose them.
Our hard-working staff are still in operation with the same rota and have 2 shifts per day 7 days a week. We have a steady group of volunteers who are
essential to the running of the kennels. Volunteers help in a number of ways which we are incredibly grateful to them. Dog walking, cleaning kennels, jobs around kennels, gardening, home checkers, fund raising etc
We have worked hard to ensure that the strays of Redcar & Cleveland and Hambleton councils’ areas have a safe place to stay with us. Between 1st September 2023 and the 31st August 2024 we took in 175 strays. Owner surrenders were 112 which included our commitment to retired Greyhounds. We also helped rehome 27 puppies. In total that was 314 dogs in this year alone.
We have continued to ensure that our dogs receive the best veterinary care as well as continuing our vaccination, flea and worming programme. We have also neutered dogs via our outreach policy and provided specialist veterinary treatment for dogs when needed. There has been a big increase in vet costs and it is another area that has added to increase the monthly running costs.
The Electricity bills have tripled, and we received a demand of an incredible amount of £25,025 in November. This was for a past period, that they hadn’t billed us for, but we successfully fund raised to cover most of it but again it’s another added strain on the monthly running costs.
In June 2024 we received a grant from Unite The Union of 2.5 k to move the dog feeding area into an old kennel space. This has made room in the future for some new kennels to be built in its place. The feeding station is now a safer contained area where its secure from vermin
On the 4/7/24 the wonderful addition to Maxi’s Mates of a new building containing 4 brand new kennel spaces and a medical room was officially opened.
It was made possible by a lovely lady called Audrey Williams who left a bequest to us, sadly after she died, but she wanted to help a small charity, and she certainly did. We will be forever grateful. The bequest has also allowed us to revamp existing kennels, have a new reception area, staff kitchen, bring water to the paddocks for water bowls or filling paddling pools. But the main advantage is to have somewhere for dogs needing extra care i.e. dogs recuperating from operations, older dogs or puppies. This will let them have a quieter space from the rest of the kennel population.
The medical/treatment room adds to this asset. We are so very honoured by this and how she allowed us to have the funds to make this possible as it was something we could not have done on our own at this stage. Funds are needed for the monthly running costs and to remain in operation which is vital for the longevity of Maxi’s Mates.
