The trustees present their report and accounts for the year ended 30/09/2024
## **PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES**
The principal activity of the charity in the year under review was sustainable youth and community work.
## **Charitable objects**
To further or benefit the residents of Bethnal Green, East London and the neighbourhood, without distinction of sex, sexual orientation, race or of political, religious or other opinions by associating together the said residents and the local authorities, voluntary and other organisations in a common effort to advance education and to provide facilities in the interests of social welfare for recreation and leisure time occupation with the objective of improving the conditions of life for the residents
## **STRUCTURE GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT**
In furtherance of these objects but not otherwise, the trustees shall have power:
To establish or secure the establishment of a community centre and to maintain or manage or co-operate with any statutory authority in the maintenance and management of such a centre for activities promoted by the charity in furtherance of the above objects.
1. To provide the necessary facilities for the daily care, recreation and education of children and young people during out of school hours and school holidays.
2. To advance in life and relieve the needs of young people through:
- a) The provision of recreational and leisure time activities provided in the interest of social welfare, designed to improve their conditions of life.
- b) Providing support and activities which develop their skills, capacities and capabilities to enable them to participate in society as mature and responsible individuals.
- c) To develop the capacity and skills of the members of the socially and economically deprived community of Bethnal Green, East London in such a way that they are better able to identify, and help meet, their needs and to participate more fully in society.
- d) Such other charitable purposes for the public benefit as are exclusively charitable according to the laws of England and Wales as the trustees may from time to time determine.

## **Summary of the main activities in relation to those purposes for the public benefit, in particular, the activities, projects or services identified in the accounts.**
SimpleGifts fulfils its charitable objects by offering activities and services to benefit the local community, including children and young people, parents, older people, women, people with disabilities, refugees and asylum seekers and new arrivals.
Our programmes primarily support people in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets; however we have users who attend from our neighbouring boroughs, Hackney, Newham and the City of London.
Our activities and services delivered during the year provide opportunities for the local community to engage in positive activities, which contributes to social and personal development. We respond to the needs of the communities and develop programmes which are co-designed and led by local people. All our programmes are free to attend.
## **Chai & Chat**
Opportunities for women to meet socially and take part in positive activities over a cup of tea, interacting with others locally, developing friendships and social networks that reduces isolation and loneliness. They benefit from regular talks and workshops from external agencies which includes, information sessions on health, welfare, housing, mental health, employment & training, and skills-based workshops. We have an average attendance of 20 people attending each session.
## **Community Lunch**
Regular community-based lunches, provide the opportunity for up to 30 people from diverse backgrounds to mix, breaking down barriers and promoting community cohesion. We encourage social action and communities take the lead to organise and deliver the community lunches, they bring food items and share with others.
## **Mindful Men**
A user led session part supported by the NHS which consists of gentle exercise delivered by an experienced life coach followed by meditation, reflection, and discussions on health matters. The sessions cater for working and non-working men in a safe and non-judgmental environment which provides the opportunity for them to take part in exercise, build emotional resilience and receive peer support, develop friendships, social networks as well as share life experiences and skills such as cooking, yoga, dealing with stress, family, and welfare. 15 men have participated in the sessions.
## **Holiday Programmes:**
We provided positive social and recreational activities for children and young people, including sports and arts and crafts and cultural activities. We provided a nutritious hot meal to those eligible for free school meals and they took part in workshops on topics that contribute to their personal development such as living and eating healthy, bullying, and staying safe etc. They have achieved outcomes such improved confidence and resilience, learning new skills and increased awareness of healthy living. 50 children and young people have attended the holiday programmes.
## **Women’s Health & Fitness**
Responding to local need we provide weekly sessions to improve the health and wellbeing of women through exercise. Sessions are facilitated by a qualified trainer improving their general health and fitness and provides space to develop friendships and networking opportunities and on average we have 20 women attending the weekly sessions.

## **Sewing Club:**
We provided weekly sessions, co-designed with women taking part and leading on sewing activities which helps them to learn new skills, repair and renew clothes, make new friends, and socialise with others reducing isolation and loneliness. 25 women are registered and have average turnout of 12 participants.
## **Tech Club:**
Aimed at those that are digitally excluded or struggling to use and access online activities/ programmes. Some do not have the correct equipment or do not have access to broadband or do not have the skills. We offer access to equipment and broadband and training.
## **ESOL:**
Classes are delivered from our centre and this enabled residents, new migrants to improve their English language proficiency, learn new skills and experiences, develop new friendships and to further their integration in society. They are offered opportunities to volunteer and can take part in a range of activities at the centre.
## **Volunteering Programme:**
As a community led organisation, we offer opportunities for local people to volunteer with SimpleGifts. Social action is core to what we do and this gives communities input into the development of the programmes on offer ensuring it is led by them and meets their needs. Volunteers help us to connect locally and gives prospective volunteers opportunities to learn new skills, build knowledge and progress into employment, education, or training. We have had 8 different volunteers throughout the year supporting the different activities.
## **Youth Outreach:**
As a response to the lack of provision for children and young people in the Bethnal green area and we initiated a youth outreach programme which engages with younger children and young people (9–13-year-olds) in their own environment. This provided us with the opportunity to understand the unmet needs of this age group and what services we can provide outside of our holiday programmes. We have used this opportunity to gather information on their needs which will help us develop appropriate activities and signpost to other services in the area. We have engaged over 25 children and young people during the 3 months of outreach.
## **Achievements and Performance**
We have continued to fulfil our mission through a programme of activities that have deepened existing partnerships and welcomed new service users. We recognise that communities have had to deal with challenges such as cost of living crisis, food, and fuel poverty, which have had a long tern detrimental impact and we have continued to support communities with programmes and activities which can help them navigate these challenges.
We have launched new initiatives in consultation with local communities such as the youth outreach programme and we are looking to develop more initiatives in the coming year.
We have continued to support children and young people during school holidays Christmas, Easter and Summer with positive activities and a hot meal for those that are in need. This reduced pressure on families during these challenging times.

## **SIMPLE GIFTS: UNITARIAN CENTRE FOR SOCIAL ACTION**
Chai & Chat and community lunches helped people to create local connections and develop new friendships, which leads to more community support and stronger bonds between people. Through this they were able to improve their awareness of local services and improve their confidence and learn new skills, gain experience through volunteering and organising community lunches.
We are helping to tackle digital poverty and are part of the Local Authority Digital Inclusion Group and contribute the Tower Hamlets strategy to get more people online. Our Tech Club helps communities to get online and ensure they are not excluded from essential services.
We support women and particularly those from disadvantaged households to improve their confidence, skills, and knowledge through our sewing club and ESOL classes.
We have opened our centre during the winter months as a warm space hub for local people who are struggling to stay warm during the cold periods and this includes the use of our centre and refreshments for part of the week.
We have provided information advice and guidance to help families to deal with the cost-of-living crisis and have signposted them to other support services which can help them with welfare, health, and housing and improve their social and economic circumstances.
The report was prepared in accordance with the special provisions within Part 15 of the Companies Act 2006.

## **INDEPENDENT EXAMINER'S REPORT TO THE TRUSTEES OF SIMPLE GIFTS: UNITARIAN CENTRE FOR SOCIAL ACTION**
I report on the accounts of the company for the year ended 30/09/2024 .
## **RESPECTIVE RESPONSIBILITIES OF TRUSTEES AND EXAMINER**
The trustees (who are also the directors of the company for the purposes of company law) are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act) and that an independent examination is needed. I am qualified to undertake the examination by being a qualified member of Association of Chartered Certified Accountants .
Having satisfied myself that the charity is not subject to an audit under company law and is eligible for independent examination, it is my responsibility to:
- examine the accounts under section 145 of the 2011 Act;
- follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act; and
- state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
## **BASIS OF INDEPENDENT EXAMINERS STATEMENT**
My examination was carried out in accordance with general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a "true and fair view" and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.

## **1. ACCOUNTING POLICIES**
## **1a. Basis Of Accounting**
The accounts have been prepared under the historical cost convention.
The accounts have been prepared in accordance with FRS102 - The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland and the Companies Act 2006 and the requirements of the Statement of Recommended Practice, Accounting and Reporting by Charities.
## **1b. Incoming Resources**
All incoming resources are included on the Statement of Financial Activities when the charity is legally entitled to the income and the amount can be quantified with reasonable accuracy.
## **1c. Resources Expended**
Expenditure is accounted for on an accruals basis and has been classified under headings that aggregate all cost related to the category. Where costs cannot be directly attributed to particular headings they have been allocated to activities on a basis consistent with the use of resources.
## **1d. Allocation And Apportionment Of Costs**
All costs relate to the single activity of the charitable company and are recognised accordingly.
## **1e. Fund Accounting**
Unrestricted funds can be used in accordance with the charitable objectives at the discretion of the trustees.
Restricted funds can only be used for particular restricted purposes within the objects of the charity. Restrictions arise when specified by the donor or when funds are raised for particular restricted purposes.
Designated funds are funds set aside by the trustees out of unrestricted general funds for the specific future purposes or projects.
