Helping Hands for Education Charity Number 1162358 Annual Report: April 1, 2022-March 31, 2023

Helping Hands for Education was approved as a Charitable Incorporated Organization in June 2015 by the Charity Commission under the charity number 1162358. It is governed by a constitution last updated in May 2015.

Organisational Structure

The charity trustees are responsible for the general control and management of the charity. The trustees give their time freely and receive no remuneration or other financial benefits. The trustees meet as a body on an ad hoc basis and are responsible for all decisions taken in relation to running the charity, including the recruitment and appointment of any new trustees and any capital expenditure.

Objectives

The charity’s key aims, and objects are to advance the education of children and adults, those living in Ogbomosho, Oyo State, Nigeria, by the provision of:

Strategies and Activities

During the financial year 2022-2023, the main area of focus of Helping Hands for Education was to raise funds for our Nigerian sister charity, The Alawiye Foundation, to continue making progress in the construction of the library and educational centre for the use of the local schools and wider community and to continue to support the temporary library that is currently operating pending the completion of the permanent educational centre.

Towards the end of the previous financial period and on into the current financial period, HHE, working through the Alawiye Foundation, sponsored the complete renovation of the library at the Nuruddeen Grammar School in Ogbomosho. The school’s library was in a dire state following flooding. The roof and ceiling were unsafe and the room had had to be abandoned. Thanks to HHE’s sponsorship, the school now has a fully renovated library. The works undertaken included replacing the roof, windows and doors,

installing a new suspended ceiling, purchasing chairs, tables and shelving, and stocking the shelves with donated textbooks and library books.

Fundraising

Unfortunately, the global financial and cost of living crisis has again drastically curtailed our fundraising efforts this year. Nevertheless, we continue to use social media platforms to solicit donations for the charity. As a result, having previously completed the foundations, we have now managed to finance the building of the walls of the library and resource centre up to the top level of the doors and windows, thereby completing the load bearing structure.

The next stage of the project is to raise sufficient funds to construct the roofing parapet, undertake the roofing work, install an external gate and increase the height of the boundary walls enclosing the plot.

To this end, we intend to redouble our fundraising efforts to realise these aims, God willing.
