## **The Pye History Trust** ## Report of the Trustees 2020 – 2021 The Trust presents the annual report for the year 31 March 2020 to 31 March 2021. Audited accounts for the above period are listed separately. ## **Reference and Administrative Information** The Trust is constituted as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO), registered on 19 June 2015, UK Registered Charity No. 1162310 The Trust name can be abbreviated to PHT. **The Trustees** Robert Bates Roger Crabtree David Featherby Pauline Howes Richard Howes Simon Howes Richard McMullan Michael Wassall Trustees are appointed by the Continuing Trustees and should number between three and ten suitably competent persons according to the needs of the Trust ## **Company secretary** Richard Howes **Registered Office** 4 Burgoynes Farm Close Impington Cambridge CB24 9ZU ## **Objectives** The purpose of the Trust is to research, document, collect, interpret, exhibit, and explain for the education of the public, the history, people, technologies, products, and achievements of the Pye Group of electronics companies and its successors in title which were formerly headquartered in Cambridge. There have been no changes to the constitution dated 4 June 2015 during the period of this report. ## **Summary of Activities, Performance and Public Benefit 31 March 2020 - 31 March 2021** The Trust has continued to be active in the research, documentation, collection, exhibition and display and education of the public in the history of the Pye Group of companies and its successors in title, although during the continuing COVID-19 pandemic it has been necessary to scale down face-to-face public group activities. Some 14,000 people in the East Anglia region of the UK were once employed by the Pye Group of companies and the Trust has continued to provide a public benefit by providing a source of local history, industrial and technological information concerning the Pye Group to the people of Cambridgeshire plus those further afield. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, during the period under review, the Trust has given only one public hour-long group slide presentation on the history, people, technology, and products of the Pye Group to a local audience. In order to compensate, a Webinar type of presentation has been successfully designed and implemented by transmission via the public Internet and a copy of a modified Pye History presentation with voice-over placed on Youtube.com. The Trust will resume the process of public presentations on the history and technology of the Pye Group as and when permissible and or practicable. The Trust has continued, where practicable, to use other forms of communication to provide historical and technical information and advice on the Pye Group company history, products and people to members of the public from the UK and various countries of the world in answer to many questions received via email contact as a result of the Internet websites, domain names www.pyemuseum.org and www.pye-story.org. The Trust has continued to support the Cambridge Museum of Technology (CMT) which hosts the Trusts’ permanent Pye Group public exhibition at Cheddars Lane, Cambridge by providing expert invigilators for explainer duty (when permissible and practicable) to both organised group visits and walk-in visitors. This exhibition opened to the public on 7 June 2019. Arising from ongoing research, the Trust has continued to identify key or iconic Pye Group products, that should be preserved as a reference collection and/or exhibited and has continued the process of selecting examples and storing them securely in the long term for future use. ## Statement of Conformance to Public Benefit Requirements The Trustees have had regard for the guidance on public benefit issued by the Charity Commission from time to time and contained within documents PB1, PB2 and PB3 and have acted accordingly. ## **Additional Information** The Trustees wish to particularly thank the Trustees of the Pye Foundation for its continued and generous financial support, without which the permanent Pye Group Exhibition in Cambridge could not have been implemented. The Trustees are grateful for the contribution made by the helpers, supporters, and correspondents of the Pye History Project, including members of the public who have contacted them by email, letter and personally at the various public presentations. The Trust has received the invaluable contribution of historical research, information, documents, photographs, artefacts, and personal reminiscences from a wide range of former colleagues and exPye Group employees and their families and wishes to thank them all. Since inception, the Trustees have worked in the following areas of activity: Conservation and restoration of electronic and electromechanical equipment Collections management, transportation, and storage Public relations, presentations, exhibition, and display planning Received donations of documents, photographs, and other memorabilia ## **Financial Review** The Trustees consider that the results for this year of operation and the financial position are satisfactory. Please see separate statement of financial activities. ## **Reserves Policy** The CIO has not yet built up enough accumulated unrestricted funds to establish a reserves policy. The Trustees consider that the unrestricted funds are adequate to meet the general needs and liabilities of the CIO in the immediate future. Restricted funds are the direct result of an appeal for financial support for the Pye Group exhibition by the Cambridge Museum of Technology. No Trustee received any personal benefit or remuneration or expenses from the Trust during the period of this report. The Trust does not at present have any registered volunteers and the Trustees are the only members of the Trust.
