2. Providing Emergency Medical Evacuation
Services from remote mountain communities
to the SMMMS Clinic in Kiyet;
3. Providing mentoring on reproductive, maternal
and neonatal healthcare (RMNH) to seven (7)
government health centres and the SMMMS
Clinic in Kiyet as well as specialised training
and equipment to create health centres of
excellence in women’s healthcare.
4. Providing monitoring and evaluation of the
project with partners and stakeholders to
ensure accomplishment of objectives.|

Due to the lack of security in the project, we had to suspend our sponsorship of volunteers to do field work in the project area under our “Doctors for the Simien Mountains” programme.

and achievements.
**1. Assessment of Women’s Healthcare**
**Services.**
During the first quarter of 2023, we conducted
a formal assessment of the level of women’s
healthcare service available at the health
centres damaged by the war. We used the
results to develop a programme to further
develop the capabilities of these facilities.
**2. RMNH Mentoring for Health Centres**
Under the direction of the Debark General
Hospital, we provided quarterly health centre-
based mentoring on RMNH for the seven (7)
government health centres we support, as
well as our Clinic at Kiyet to sustain delivery
of: midwifery professional services,
BEmONC, comprehensive family planning
services, screening and treatment for cervical
cancer (CXCA), as well as screening and
referral for breast cancers, obstetric fistula
(OF) and pelvic organ prolapse (POP).
**3. Cervical Cancer Prevention Campaigns**
During June 2023, we conducted a series of
CXCA screening and treatment campaigns at
selected health centres to develop the
capabilities of medical staff at these facilities
to provide these essential services.
**4. Specialised Training and Certification.**
As part of our efforts to improve the
availability of essential women's healthcare
services in the NGZ, we organised and
conducted specialised training courses and
certification programmes to ensure that each
of the healthcare facilities we support has
sufficient qualified staff to perform as a centre
of excellence for women's healthcare,
including:

Palliative Care Service, 30 January – 3
February 2023, with the Hospice Ethiopia
in Debark town for a total of 28 healthcare
professionals from the NGZ.
•
BEmONC, 1 – 12 May 2023, with the
University of Gonder (UofG), College of
Medical and Health Sciences (CMHS) at
the UofG, for 16 participants six (6) health
centres and our Clinic.|
||•|Comprehensive Abortion Care, 15– 26|

|||May 2023, with the UofG CMHS at the|
|||UofG, for 13 participants from seven (7)|
|||health centres and our Clinic.|
||•|Comprehensive Family Planning, 12 – 23|

|||Transmission (PMTCT), 3-14 July 2023,|
|||with the UofG CMHS at the UofG, for 20|
|||midwives from seven (7) health centres|
|||as well as our clinic.|
||•|On-site Evaluation and Certification,|
|||during December 2023, to ensure course|
|||graduates retained the knowledge and|
|||skill required to deliver the respective|
|||services and to provide remedial training|
|||as required for certification.|
|**5.**|**Provision of Specialised Equipment**||
||•|Non-pneumatic anti-shock garments|
|||(NASGs) - purchased in March 2023, and|
|||issued to three (3) health centres|
|||damaged by the war along with on-site|
|||training on the use of NASGs to prevent|
|||post-partum haemorrhaging (PPH).|
||•|Basic Medical Equipment - purchased in|
|||June, including fetoscopes, stethoscopes|
|||and digital blood pressure kits and issued|
|||to the three (3) health centres damaged|
|||by the war.|
|6.|**SMMMS Clinic Improvements**||
||Over the course of the year, we completed a||
||number of construction projects and||
||renovations improve the capabilities and||
||operation of the clinic:||
||•|Construction of maternal waiting home|
|||(MWH) 84 m2 (12m x 7m) and a new|
|||block for showers and toilets completed in|
|||July 2023, for a total cost of €34,793 (ETB|
|||1,308,093. It was fully furnished with|
|||beds, linens, chairs, cabinets and|
|||kitchenware. It became fully operational in|
|||October.|
|||It now provides accommodation for|
|||expectant mothers who can now arrive|
|||ahead of the delivery date for their final|
|||antenatal care checks and remain with|
|||their newborn for postnatal checks.|
||•|Construction of an earth retaining wall|
|||along the uphill side of the clinic to protect|
|||it from erosion during the monsoon|
|||season.|
||•|Replaced the Clinic Perimeter Fence|
|||using materials and labour provided by|
|||the local community.|
|||Repainted the Clinic interior and exterior|
|---|---|---|
|||walls.|
|**7.**|**SMMMS Clinic Operations**||
||During the past year, our clinic provided||
||medical and healthcare services, including||
||24/7 emergency care and delivery services,||
||to|6,392 patients, an 11% increase from the|
||previous year. We also provide public health||
||talks for 11,070 local residents. Services||
||delivered of particular interest were:||
||•|**Maternal and Neonatal Care**|
|||`o`1,021 antenatal care visits (ANC1–4);|
|||`o`710 expectant mothers attended|
|||mothers’ conferences;|
|||`o`163 safe deliveries at the clinic, with|
|||no maternal or neonatal deaths;|
|||`o`All new-born’s received post-natal|
|||care (PNC) checks within 6 - 24 and|
|||145 mothers returned for follow-up|
|||PNC checks at 6 days and 6 weeks.|
||•|**Family Planning**|
|||`o`784 women received family planning|
|||services, including 642 for short|
|||acting (oral & injectable)|
|||contraceptives and 142 long acting|
|||(Implant & IUD).|
||•|**Screening Cervical and Breast Cancers**|
|||`o`100 women screened for Cervical|
|||Cancer (CXCA) with 13 with testing|
|||positive all treated at the clinic using|
|||the new WiSAP thermocoagulation|
|||device;|
|||`o`959 women received clinical breast|
|||examinations.|
||•|**Medical Screening and Treatment**|
|||`o`3,312 patients were screened for TB|
|||with 34 suspected cases identified|
|||and referred to Debark General|
|||Hospital;|
|||`o`1,805 women coming for ANC and|
|||family planning service were|
|||screened for HIV, anaemia and|
|||malnutrition.|

I report in respect of my examination of the Trust's accounts carried out
under section 145 of the 2011 AGI and in carrying out my examination, I
have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission
under section 145{5}{b) of the Act.
