referral and follow-up care for common diseases,
illness and injuries with priority to professional
maternal and natal care, as well as training and
education in health, hygiene, sanitation and basic
first aid.

SMMMS-UK conducts the following main
activities:
1. Operating the SMMMS Clinic in Kiyet,
Janamora to provide basic medical and
healthcare services, including 24/7 emergency
and delivery services as well as basic health
education to more than 14.400 residents in
local communities;
2. Deploying Mobile Medical Outreach Nurse
Teams to conduct mobile clinics and provide
diagnosis, treatment, referral and follow-up as
well as basic health education for roughly
108,000 people living in 23 of the most
underserved communities in the Zone;
3. Delivering Integrated Professional Midwifery
Services to build capacity and improve the
quality 24/7 reproductive, maternal and
neonatal services in 7 government health
centres serving a total population of 226,900,
of whom 53,500 are women ages 15-49;
4. Deploying a Visiting School Nurse to provide
primary healthcare and health education,
including age-appropriate sexual and
reproductive health, at 3 primary and 1
secondary schools in the mountains.
5. Providing Emergency Medical Evacuation
Services from remote mountain communities
in 4 catchment areas to local health centres;
6. Supporting the Debark Regional Hospital,
which is the only general hospital for the Zone,
with critical medical equipment and supplies,
specialist training, and technical assistance;
7. Sponsoring “Doctors for the Simien Mountains”
to provide advice, training and assistance to
local healthcare authorities and facilities;
8. Sponsoring “Best Health Centre Maternity
Department” competitions to promote quality
standards and best practices among the 37
health centres in the North Gonder Zone;
9. Providing monitoring and evaluation of the
project with partners and stakeholders to
ensure accomplishment of objectives.

suspend our sponsorship of volunteers to do field
work in the project area under our “Doctors for
the Simien Mountains”programme in 2020.

Para 1.20 Our main achievements in 2020 have benefitted
more than 349,300 people living in remote,
inaccessible and underserved communities in the
Simien Mountains as follows:
1. The SMMMS clinic in Janamora provided
medical and health care to 8,502 patients,
including 90 deliveries, family planning for
1,011 women, screened 91 women for
cervical cancer as well as health education
for 12,240 local residents
2. Our five (5) mobile community nurse teams
provided general healthcare, including family
planning, immunisations, and screening for
malnutrition, HIV/AID, TB and malaria for over
15,440 patients, including family planning for
2,616 women and health education to more
than 37,782 4 local residents;
3. SMMMS BSc midwives working in seven (7)
local health centres provided 9,607 antenatal
care visits, safely delivered 2,511 babies,
performed 4,298 postnatal care checks,
provided family planning for 12,790 women,
screened 349 women for cervical cancer and
5,257 women for breast cancer;
4. We completed our clinical certification of the
health centres we support to conduct cervical
cancer screening and treatment of
precancerous lesions.
5. We initiated a new project with the local
health authorities to improve women’s

healthcare at seven (7) health centres in the Simien Mountains, as well as our own clinic, and trained 24 SMMMS and government midwives at the University of Gonder to provide basic emergency obstetric and neonatal care (BEmONC).

On 19 October 2019, we renewed our registration with the
Ethiopian Agency for Civil Societies as a foreign charity
authorised to operates in Ethiopia and to implement a new four-
year project agreement with the Federal Ministry of Health for
"Expanding and Extending Medical Services in the Simien
Mountains, signed on 22 January 2019.
We operate in close cooperation with the North Gondar Zone
Department of Health, the Debark Regional Hospital, local health
officers and the University of Gondar, College of Medicine and
Health Sciences.
