To advance the education of the general public in Corfe Castle and the surrounding area, in particular but not exclusively by the provision of a lending library;

Section D Achievements and performance

This past year has had its challenges, including for Corfe Castle Community Library, but thanks to our volunteers we have risen to them and made some positive changes.

During the early part of 2021 we were still operating a skeleton service, including looking after book groups, which we helped by paying the costs of booking a room in the Village Hall for their meetings. We opened up again in June with all the Covid safe arrangements that we still have, including hand sanitising, face coverings and ventilation – which often means volunteers wearing coats during sessions. We’re happy to report that the library was not associated with any Covid infections over the last 2 years. We now have a small but regular stream of customers, and are really pleased at the numbers of families with children coming in.

In 2021 we also concentrated on making improvements to the library. These included an enlarged children’s area with a colourful rug and beanbag, and new shelves in the porch to house the books for sale and the Free Loan books and jigsaws. This makes much better use of the space we have. We have made the front garden more accessible by removing part of the front wall and improving the paving. Our thanks go to Liz Roberts, Ray Bray and Roy Ford for their input on these projects – also thanks to the people who added their ideas during the planning phases.

The annual accounts again show a healthy balance.

Covid limited what we could do in the area of children’s activities and talks, but we did manage a very enjoyable and well-attended talk on local photography by Deb Fullbrook in November. Thanks to Martyn for all his work on events and publicity, and for taking charge of the new and impressive Village Hall audio-visual technology.

Thanks to the committee and all our dedicated volunteers, who have soldiered on during the pandemic despite the autumn and winter cold. We look forward to a being able to hold more events in 2022 and bring the children’s groups back in, so watch this space!
