Objectives and Activities

SORP reference
Summary of the purposes of
the charity as set out in its
governing document
Para 1.17 To advance public education in and
appreciation of the art of dance.
Summary of the main
activities in relation to those
purposes for the public
benefit, in particular, the
activities, projects or
services identified in the
accounts.
Para 1.17 and
1.19
This year was the completion of our ACE
funded Shifting Landscapes project (ended
May 2025), and the continuation of our 3-
year CIN funded project.
In addition, we had funding for the Music
Matters on the Move project on the
Oncology Ward and had confirmation for
funds for ongoing ward-based work from
Alder Hey Children’s Charity for 2025-26.
Through this funding we carried out the
following: -
1) We continued with ward-based
practice on the cardiac and
neuromedical units, accompanying
infants, children and young people
in exploring movement, through
touch, sensory play and improvised
dance.
2) Following the launch of our VR
project we collaborated with Heathy
Mind to have our content uploaded
onto their headsets which are used
by several departments at Alder
Hey.
3) We initiated our new project on the
oncology ward, collaborating with
musicians Hedi Pinkerfeld and
Georgina Aasgaard.
4) We hosted 4 interns and 2 emerging
artists on placement at Alder Hey
Children’s Hospital-supporting artist
development.
Statement confirming
whether the trustees have
had regard to the guidance
issued by the Charity
Commission on public
benefit
Para 1.18 The charity’s trustees believe that the
charity’s activities provided public benefit as
activities took place within a public
children’s hospital. Activities included the
appreciation of art and contributed to the
health and wellbeing of patients.
Impact
The charity worked with long term patients
on the cardiac and neuromedical wards,
experiencing extended stays in hospital
including those who have had painful
operations and those with complex
conditions. ICYP in hospital are often
anxious, in pain, bored and struggling
emotionally. Research shows (Dowler, L
2013;2016;2024) that improvisation and
somatic dance reduce pain, support
creativity, reduce isolation, aid recovery
and improve mental health. Often, children
transform from being, introverted withdrawn
and fearful to communicating, expressing
themselves and having fun.

Achievements and Performance

Summary of the main
achievements of the charity,
identifying the difference the
charity’s work has made to
the circumstances of its
beneficiaries and any wider
benefits to society as a
whole.
SORP reference
Para 1.20
Our monitoring shows that we engaged
419 Infants, Children and Young People
and their families in creative arts
experiences.
Our beneficiaries were able to choose their
activity through our child-led practice,
exploring movement, music and dance.
This significantly enhanced their wellbeing.
Here are some artist notes:
'A' was post cardiac surgery and sitting
quietly, not moving much. Throughout her
session she explored movement and sound
in her own timing. Over time she gained
confidence and creatively expressed
herself. Her mum said, "I can’t believe she
has gone from shuffling to the toilet earlier
to the way she is now. That’s 'A' back!”.
'A' said she had lots of fun and asked if we
could come back tomorrow!
'B' had just had a cannula put in and a
dose of medicine. She was very upset and
groaning, feeling very sorry for herself. She
chose her activity and gradually her energy
started to lift, her attention shifted from the
arm with her cannula, and we began to get
lots of smiles. Her mum said, "This is the
first time I've seen her smiling since she
has been in hospital."
We also held placements for emerging
artists to share our knowledge and skills,
which they can take out to benefit wider
society.
