TTWP Trustees report for year ending 31[st] March 2021
For 12 years Transition towns Weymouth and Portland this (TTWP) has pursued its main objective of creating a more resilient, locally based lifestyle through starting, supporting, resourcing and bidding for local practical ACTION. Positive action for people and the planet, at the local level. This year has been very different as, due to the COVID 19 we have not been able to meet as a steering group, while for most of the year, our work with volunteers, fairs, events and socials has all moved online or been postponed. Regardless, the year has been active and extremely positive; involving a whole range of new actions and connections.
The steering group, including the officers as well as some of the 7 trustees continued to meet monthly then bi-monthly on-line; keeping our core group of 49 members and 11 occasional contacts in touch through newsletters, a face book page, and a website. Positive actions included:

April 2020 saw us setting out a positive view of lockdown - 5 consequences of our lack of movement which might enhance the transition to a sustainable future while improving our well- being. May 2020 saw the appointment of a project officer, Clive Tusk, at Tumbledown Farm, enabling an increase in local groups able to take part in sowing, growing, reaping and distributing the produce. Then May saw us collaborate with #Weymouth Together specifically over a local food group; looking at ways of bringing healthy, sustainable food to as many local people as possible. September and October saw project funding being realised for Tumbledown Farm, to make the site useable, as well as our contributing to a new safeguarding policy for adults for the Repair Café, Weymouth. Other outward facing projects included contributing to consultations over the Portland Incinerator plans and a joint activity with Ourganics , Dorset. Being locked in again for a virtual festive Christmas celebration led on to January’s circulation on ‘e-learning’ and sustainability or transition, trying to maintain our momentum.

The sub-group model of organisation continues to thrive, with extensive collaboration with #Weymouth Together over a bid for setting up a climate emergency centre (CEC) in the council’s unused North Quay buildings. The outcome of the bid from this sub-group is still awaited and while the Lottery bid from Portland to support projects in schools was unsuccessful, Portland for the Planet continues to plant trees and increase biodiversity on the island. The Portland Permaculture project and Incline have carried on engaging with volunteers, managing the land, and improving their plots. Their reports are well received at each steering group meeting. Westfield Technology College persists with their growing project despite the restrictions on schools. And one new sub group to spring up is the. Weymouth Permaculture project based at Tumbledown Farm

Transition Towns works with all parties, and we aim to give a voice to people who, for whatever reason, can’t access politics easily and TTWP always followed this ideal by hosting hustings, debates, vision exercise and talks, producing newsletters and bringing political ideas around climate change into our communities. The future collaboration with #Weymnouth together promises much in terms of getting news, events and opportunities out to people. We hope that the new website will be on line within a month or so.

Looking forward we can only hope that when lockdown is lifted at the end of this month, we can start to meet in person again and that TTWP will continue to thrive.
